(Left) Over 300 riders were on hand at Brownsville, and lapped traffic was a major problam for the leaders. Here, the riders head Into the woods off the start. (Below) With much of Team Suzuki Off-Road across the country at the Nevada Qualifier, Mark Hyde put away his wrenches and pit board, and did battle on an RMX250, He was second In the Vet A . division, finishing behind Ed LoJak. Brownsville. "The only place that those other guys were pulling me was on the big hills and the power-lines. The ground got loose after a while and 1just couldn't hook up like they could. 1 was just spinning my tire some limes but 1 think 1 was faster than them in the woods. 1 must .have b een able to keep ca tching b ack up." . It wasn't until five of eight laps were completed before the final order started slowed back down b y someone you're lapping for the third lime. Trying to get away from the pack here is like beating you r head against a wall." Plessinger and Andrew s swapped the le a d .s e vera l times, bu tat o ne poin t Andrews was w aved to the front of the line by his counterpart. "1 think Scott saw that 1 was better at getting through the lappers so he pulled over and let me by," admitted Andrews. "1 was the one yelling o r plowing through the traffic while he pretty much stayed right behind me." Andrews led most of the seventh lap, but made an error just before the open section where the competition was scored. Plessinger, a purebred woods rider, took the miscue as a sign to make his own break, but the motocross track proved to be the wrong place to try and leave Andrews, a veteran pro motocrosser. Plessinger held his own to take shape. Conner was in the thick of things until he fell down just after the halfway mark, never to m a ke contact with the leaders again. Norton stayed in contention longer, but as the lead pace picked up the 125cc rid er started to lose ground on the other faster bikes. He was never completely out of the picture until he had another run-in with a lapped rider that finally eliminated him fr om overall con tention. . . N orton remained in contention until the waning moments of the nearly threehour-long race. "There were so many people and it was so tight that you couldn't really pass anyone," said Andrews. "Somehow this track is tighter and faster than most of the tracks on the circuit. Every lime you try to take off running here, you just get against Andrews and stil l had the lead when they dropped out of sight into the first tight woods section. Then the massive lapped traffic once again came in play. "Every thing was going pretty good until that last lap," said Plessinger as he iced a bruised shoulder after the race. "1 thought 1 had him, but some lapped guy on an XR took the front end out from under my bike and that gave Fred about 10 seconds on me. 1 caught back up after the second check when he went over in the trees passing some guys, but right when 1 caught up to him one of the guys that he was having trouble with locked his brakes up in front of me and 1plowed
