during the fourth round of the Mickey
'Thompson U1tracross Series at the-Sam
Boyd Silver Bowl.

Wi th an u nseaso na l " heat wave "
scorching the track earlier in the wee k,
riders and teams were preparing for the
elemen ts which you should expect"from
a Las Vegas race - unbearable heat and a
dry, slick track. But cloud cover
dropped the temperature into the 70s on
race da y, setting up ideal racing conditions for an outstanding field of 250cc
riders.
Brooks, w ho is the defend ing class
champion, was on the inside of row six
for the start of the 10-lap main event
while teamma te a nd cu r rent po ints
leader Kyle Lewis sa t on the ou tside of
row seven.
At the drop of the gree n flag. it was
Broo ks who got off the line fastest and
began to work his way through the
pack, moving up to second place by the
end of the first lap. Lewis didn't fare as
well and sat a distant seventh. Brooks
began to reel in leader Ray Crumb by
the end of lap two , and passed Crumb
for the lead in the whoops section en tering tum three on the third lap . Lewis
got by Crumb -mom ents later, and set
his sights on the leader, Brooks.
Brooks used good lines through the
whoops and ran tight inside the turns to
hold Lewis at bay en route to his second
main-event wi n of the season. Lewis,
who has two wins to his credit this season, settled for second while Crumb finished third. Series roo kie Chad Smanjak
was fourth.
With the win, Brooks moved into a
tie with Lewis for second on the all-time
main-event win list with eight, two
behind all-time winner Tyson Vohland.
Lew is now holds a 56-point lead over
Brooks i n the champ ionhsip point
stan dings, 289-233. The U1tracross riders
will be given a month-and-a-half layoff
before the June 18 race in Salt Lake City,
as the Mickey Thompson Stadium OffRoad Racing series prepares for its second-half run.
