Allan McClellan and Ma rk Key .By the thi rd la p the running order had already shuffled as McDonnell got by Ownbey to take over second whi le Key and lonnie Pauley had d isplaced McClella n to take charge of fifth an d sixth p lace, respectively. The order remained the same at the halfway poin t of the race as t he ride rs b u mped and nudged each othe r in the comers, testin g each other's w its. On the eighth lap, with Agui lar still lead in g and McDo nnell in second, it was Key who made a move and took over third p lace by passing Bostrom an d then Ownbey. Meanwhile at the front of the pack, Aguilar was on the gas an d holdin g off the competition to cross the finish li ne and take th e checkered flag first . McDonnell took the second spot, Key was third, Bostrom fourth and Ownbey completed the top five. In the Open Expert class the lead pair of the Pro race sw itched places with McDonnell outd ueling Aguilar to take the win. and Key again fin ishing third. This time Ownbey, in fourth, and Billy Martin rounded ou t the top five. Action in the School Boy class saw Ju stin He rmeskey g ra b th e h ol eshot a n d ri de fa s t en oug h to lead every la p to ta ke the win. But behind He rmcs key the racing ac tio n was ho t between Tyson Silva, Toby Jorgensen and Chris Marquis. The three were often side by side with Silva leading th e first th ree laps, but he wa s passed by Jorgensen on the fourth lap . On the fifth I.1p Marquis also passed Silva, dropping the youngster to fourth, but onl y temporarily, as he was able to reta ke third from Marq uis on lap seven. Hermeskey took advantage of the batt le behind him and built up a co mforta b le lea d while Jorgensen also p ut some breathing room between himself and Silva. At the finish line the order was Hermeskey, Jorgensen, Silva and Marquis. Gordon Rudy wa s the wi nne r of the ve ry compe titive Vet A class that alwa ys pu ts on a good show for the crowd. Larry Greene took the start and led the pack aro und Lodi's fast quarter-mile oval for about four lap s befo re Rud y, w ho ha d been running second, stole the lead fro m Greene. In trying to take back the lead, Greene instead found himself tryi ng to hold off a hard-eh arging Bob McD onnell, who got by Greene to take seco nd place as the pair exited turn fo u r. Many in the crowd of 50,000 arrived for the weekend to leam the shocking news of Wayne Rainey's tragic crash and injury at the previous round at the Italian GP.. While this cast a definite pall over the weekend's activities, the action on the racetrack unfolded a new chapter in motorcycle racing history, as Kevin Schwantz ascended to his first World Championship, while Michael Doonan crashed out leading the event, ending his quest for glory in 1994. In 250Cc action, what had been an insurmountable points.lead for Japan's Tetsuya Harada vanished as Italy's Loris Capirossi assumed control of the 250 GP win at Monterey, and with it, the lead for the championship.
