Procida Doug Yarnell Jumped to second overall In t he 25+ Int ermedi ate class at the Starwest MX. Clifford Goertz at the end of the first lap around th e S. I -m ile course. Goertz, Martin, Je re m y Fipps and Steve Cardwell all battled toe to toe, racin g th is way for over 25 miles. The halfway poi n t saw Goertz and Card w ell wi t h so me br eathing room over the othe r two front-runners. Th e battle was close, wi th th e Seri es AA title in the balance. Card well took the white /lag with Goertz close to the fend er of his KIM. The final S.I miles would decide it all. after 12 races. Ca rd well. the mu lti-time series champion was cool under pressu re as the blasted out of the last creek cross ing and up the slippe ry hill tha t followed . Cardwell's one bad brea k - his 300's fue l petcock need in g to be turned to reserve - was all Goertz needed to grab the lead and hold on till the end . Cardwell was on Goertz's fender to the finish, lookin g for a last chance that never came . Jeremy Fipps took the third spo t, with Martin coming in for fourth. Tra vis White made the jump from Juniors to 200cc A for the last ra ce a big one, w ith th e youngs ter topping the class by a larg e margin and remaining on the same lap as the AA riders. McElvaine, Lu ndy , Dumond an d Ed Kiley followed him hom e. Kiley grabbed the secon-moto holeshot over Steve Dy e, McEl va in e, Lampe, and Lundy. McElvain e slice d h is w a y to the front with Lam pe on his fend er. Lampe then ju m ped by McElvaine to lea ve the field on lap two , with Foley wo rkin g his wa y up after a mid-pa ck start to pass McElvaine in the same place that Lampe d id. Foley pressed on to cu t into Lampe's advantage and mad e the pass on the fourth circu it before d istan cing himself from the field to take the w in over La mpe. McElvaine, Lundy a nd Dum ond. Latina rocketed into the lead to start the first 125cc A Mod moto a nd bu ilt up a 25-second lead , that he wo u ld not relinqu ish, to ta ke a n easy win. When the field rounded the first tum of the second moto , Kenn y Yoho led the way as Latina, Despain, Brown and Dunke l gave chase.
