MAR. 13 Billy Mercier and Tim Telford each took a hardfought moto win, with Mercier claiming the top mon ey in the combined Pro class at California Racing Club's Sunday motocro ss, held at Los Angeles County Racewa y. Mercier timed the drop of the gate perfectl y to lead Telford, Erik Lindstr om and Peter Ware in the opening moto. Telford immed iately went in to attack mode and closed to Mercier's back wheeL Mercier and Telford , both YZ250-mounted, d istanced themselves from CR125 rid er Lind str om, who was doing a good job of hold ing off the ad vances of Ware and Roy Bremenour. With a stro ng wind qu ickly d ryin g out the track, Mercier was playing it safe by sticking to the still-moist inside lines. Telford was covering twice as much ground, raili ng; the sa ndy outer berms in an attempt to grab the lead. Time was running out lor Telford when he pul led next to Mercier at th e e nd o f a s traig h t, then dov e undern eath to take lead with only thr ee turns remaining. Mercier finished a close second, well ahead of Lindstrom wh o was an equal d istan ce in front of Bremenour. The seco nd mota was a rep eat of the firs t, with Mercier grabbing the holeshot and Telford breathin g down his neck. Lind strom had his little Hon d a screa m ing alon g in th ird , whe re he would remain for the en tire race. Telford was doggin g Mercier every inch of the wa y, showing the lead er his front fenrler numerous times. The two riders were nearly side-by-sid e as they flew pa st the Kal Ga rd tow er to p ick up the wh ite flag. Tello rd tried to stuff his way un derneath Me rcie r in a co rner, b u t he cli p pe d Mercier's rea r t ire, c reating a loss of moment u m and allowing Mercier to pull a six: bike-length adva ntage . Telfo rd reg rouped and closed the gap on the final circuit of the track, but came up a few feet short of Mercier a t the checke red flag. lindstrom came across the line a di stan t third wi th Bremenour fourth: Result s P/ W 8-2 1.
