What's th e po int ?
I am writing concerning the results
of the opening round of the 250cc
outdoor Nationals in Ga ines ville,
Florida (Is s u e #10) . In the 250c c
class, I was wonderin g how third
through eighth places ended up the
way they d id . You have them listed
with Brian Swink in third p lace, followed by Kiedrowski, Stanton and
Je remy McGrath. Kiedrowski, however, has less points than Swink in
m oto finishes. McG rath al so ha s less
p o in ts th an Stanton . Dubach, who is
listed as eigh th, ended up with less
points th an Matiasevich, who was
seven th.
.
Shouldn' t Kiedrowski be ahead of
Sw ink, and McG rath ahead of Stan ton
fo r the overall? Why isn' t Do ug
Du bach ahead of Matiasevich?

At National MX rounds, the AMA utilizes a points system that is different than
that used at local motocross tracks around
the country. With the amateur system,
points match finish position in each. moto
(one point for first place, two fo r second,
etc.), and the winner is the one with the
lowest total. In the Nationals, a riderearns
25 points fo r fi rst, 22 for second, 20 for
third, etc., and the one with the highest
total wins. In both systems the rider with a
higher mote-tum fi nish breaks a tie. Normall y , overall fini sh positions are not
affected, but there are unique situations,
such as that at Gainesville. This is how the
top eight riders compare, using both systems:

I would like to express my ap p rec ia tion for you r wonderful interv iew wi th
Mr. (Larry) Roeseler (Issue #8, Ma rch
2). He has been one of my favori te riders for a long time, well before he was
riding a Husqvarna. The first time I
saw him race was at Virginia City, and
I've enjoyed his appearance the re ever
since. Last year was no exception as he
put in an excellent r id e on the then
new (Kawasaki) KLX.
Thanks again for th e grea t reading
materiaL Good luc k to Larry and the
rest of Team Green.

Trial s
Af ter rea d ing yo u r recent test of th e
Montesa Cota 314R, I conside red se nd ing a letter of ap p reciation for a ll of th e
coverage that you have given observed
trials and trials mot orcycl es in the last
coup le of y e a r s . W hen I re a d Ron
Brehms' letter (February 16, issue #6), I
knew I had to se nd the pat on the back
tha t you deserve. In spite of the fac t
th at t r ials has wallowed in a selfim p osed mire of obscurity for years,
Cycle News h a s contin u ed to insert
event coverage and tried to test a trials
b ike now and again . This type of cov erage does more to expose the s port
and encourage n ew , club-level riders
than in terviews with Ry a n Young
would . While Ryan's impressive
record does more than indicate h is
exceptional talent, it also shows that he
hasn't had any competition at his skill
level in the U.S.. Rather than racking
up further numbers here in the U.S., it
would b e ni ce to see Ryan go to
Europe and hone his skills fur the r.

America 's tri als talent is still firmly in
the shadow of th e Eu ropea ns, and
Ryan, Ll.S, records as ide, is still in the
shadow of Bernie Schreiber.
Rather than ask for more coverage of
Ryan Young, I would ask that you contin ue yo ur covera ge of the events and
bi kes tha t show our sport for the fun ,
challenging, safe, fun, inexpensive, family-orientated, fun activity tha t it is. As
land restrictions ge t worse, observed
trials coul d become much more practical and popular in the future. There are
a lot of challenges facing the spo rt as we
m ove through the '90s, but w ith Cycle
News co n tinuing to keep tria ls in th e
news,l hope that the sport can continue
to ove rco me it s grow ing pains and
become as popular here as it should be.

Shame, shame
After readi ng about Rex Sta ten and his
three co-riders being d isqu alified for
cheating in the SCORE San Felipe 250,
I have to w onder about their domination of Class 30 las t yea r. H ow m an y
ot her races were won by this method?
An d , by th e way, fou r riders for a 250mile race? Come on, guys.

A little help from our friends
Aaron Hill's success at Dayto na was due
in no small part to several people. After
his 600 broke in practice Friday, we were
without a ride. Al Bergstrom of Loral
Lake Racing loaned us Ronnie [ones'
back-up machine for Friday night. On
Satu rday Ronnie was having problems
with his front-runner, so Chris Ca rr
loaned his back-up to Aaron. It was the
first time Aaron made a short track main
at Daytona and we are all deep ly ind ebted to AI and Chis for their generosity.
