Off-road racer and former member of the Old Timers MX Club Gene Powell, 57, d ied on March 14, in Long Beach, California. Don't forget that th e recently opened Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim, hom e of the Nationa l Hockey League's Anaheim Mighty Ducks hockey team, will host its first Arenacross event March 25-27. The Experts will compete on Friday and Saturda y n ights, beg inning at 7:30 p .m ., while amateurs w ill compete during the da y on Sunday, beginning at 9:00 a.m.. Some of the riders scheduled to compe te in the Expert classes are Doug Dubach, and the entire SplitFire/ Hot Wheels/ Pro Circuit / Kawasa ki team, co nsis ti ng of Pedro Gonzales, James Dobb and Ryan Hughes. A Legends of Supercross race will also be held on both nights. The legen d s field is expecte d to include pas t supercross champions Mike Bell, Broc Glover, Donnie Hansen, Rick Johnson and Jeff Ward. Autograph sessions with the Legends racers are sched uled from 6:15 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at the concourse at The Pond . Th e opening round of th e AMA/FIM Pan-Pacific Supercross Series is se t to begin Sunday, Ap ril 10, at the Pontiac Silverdome in Michigan , the day afte r the 10th round of the AMA Cam el Su per cross Series. The Pan-Pacific SX Series is designed to pu t the top p rofessional 25Occ rid ers and u p-and-coming 125cc riders from various nations bordering the Pacif- ic Ocean in d irect competition aboard 125cc machines. An $80,000 points purse will be on the line at the Silverdome. A 250cc All-Star Cha lleng e will be held in conjunction with the 125cc event on Sund ay, wi th a $20,(J()() purse up for grabs. Following the Ponti ac round, the series will resume in Madras, Ind ia on August 28, then on to Osaka, Japan on November 13, to Jakarta, Ind onesia on December 4, and Bangkok, Thailand on December 10. Races in Singapore and Australia are also under negotia tion. 33 250cc GP career wins seems almost as secure as Agostini's 68 500cc wins. Wayne Rainey, Mick Doohan and Kevin Schwanlz are the other Australian GP w inners . In the 250cc class, Luea Cadalora has w on two, while Silo Pons, John Kocinski and Tetsuya Harada have each won once Down Und er. Captain Chuck Spencer, 82, died of na tura l causes on Friday, March 18 in San Jose, Californi a. Spencer is the father of long-time Cycl News contributor Big Bill e Sp encer. Th r ee-time 500cc World Champion Wayne Rainey left Los Angeles, California, for Sydney, Au stralia on Monday, March 21 to attend the Australian Grand Prix. His appearance at the GP in Eastern Creek will mark Rainey's return to the race track following the crash last September in Ital y that left h im paralyzed from the chest down. Participants in the April 9-10 Pontiac, Michigan, Amateur Supercross will receive a free set of brake pads courtesy of Mars hall Distributing and Vesrah. Some of the riders confirmed for the Pan Pacific Supercross in Pontiac are Japan 's Masaya Kohashi and Yuichiro Kawashima; New Zealand's Joshua Coppins and Peter Aldridge; India's Shyam Kothari and Pratap Bhagwat; and Thailand's Siam Tienchalconphol and Chanchai Suktavee. Most of these riders will tr y to make the fin als in th e previous night's Camel Supercross round. The results are in from the 1994 J. Wood and Co m pa ny Daytona Antique and Classic Motorcycle Auction. In add iton to raising $11,400 for the AHRMA Benevolent Fund for injured riders , the auction . had an 86% sales rate with over 500 pe0ple registered to bid on the 250 lots. By w in ning hi s 16th supercross m ain event at the Ind iana polis Supercross at the Hoosier Do m e, Ma rc h 19, Tea m Honda's Jeremy McGrath moved into a three-way tie wi th three- time champ Jeff Stanton and 1991 cham p Jean-Michele Bayle for six th place on th e all-time s u percross win list. Th is is sim p ly remarkable when you take into account that he has accomplished this feat in just a little over a season and a half! Since moving up to the 250ccclass at the beginning of last seaso n, McGrath has won 16 of the last 24 events. He has 13 more wins to go in orde r to break the record set by Rick Johnson. Heading into the opening round of the 1994 World Champions hip Road Race Series at Eastern Creek in Sydney, Australia, on March 27, Wo rld Cha mp ion Kevin Schwanlz has the opportunity to mo ve into a tie with three-time World Champion Wayne Rainey for fourth on th e a ll-tim e 500cc Gran d Prix win list with 24 victories. Schwan lz would then need seven more GP wi ns to tie Eddie Lawso n for third on the all-time list with 31 wins. The all-time leader is current Cagiva learn manager Giacomo Agostini with 68 victories. Th e late Mike Hailwood is second on the list with 37 wins . Mick Doohan is th e other active 500cc GP rider with the best chance of moving up the list. Doohan currently has 10 victories to his credit, good enough for 14th on th e all -time list . With fou r wins in 1994, Doohan could move past Phil Read and Randy Mamola and into 12th. The Australi an woul d need eight wi ns to catch countryman Wayne Gardner who won 18 500cc GPs in his nine-year Gra nd Prix career. Japan's current World Champion Te tsuya Harada heads the list w ith fou r wins. Loris Cap irossi has three victories to his cred it; Max Biaggi has two, as does Doriano Romboni. T oni Mang and his Joe Bruce, the parts manager for Dublin Xavier Audouard, promoter of the Paris Bercy Supercross, has presented the FIM with a plan for the the '94 World Supercro ss Series. Th e plan calls for a maximum of 25 riders from the best Americans and Europeans, a nd a purse tha t would distrib ute $200,000 among the top 20 at each round. After orga nizing the Paris-Dakar-Paris Rally for only one year, French promoter Fenouil has abandoned the prestigious event. Fenouil was unable to co me to terms with Jean-Claude Killy, who heads ASO and has control over the rally. "Th ey gav e me a p roposal that I wasn't happy with," explained Fenouil. " I'll concentrate on the Pharoahs Rally (which he also promotes); Egypt wants to increase tourism and is eager to cooperate with me." n FrenCh enduro star Laurent Charbonnel has decid ed to contest the 350cc Fou rStroke class in the '94 Worl d Ch ampionship End uro Series.
