(Below) Master class winner Danny Hamm ond (21L) ran the groove at the Hope ST. PERRIS, CA, MAR 12 Spitfire /Hot Wheel s / Pr o Circuit teammates james Dobb and Pedro Gonza lez stole the show in the Pro classes during the return of GR Super Saturday MX at Perris Raceway. Dobb had an easy time in the 125cc Pro race by po sting an imp ress ive do uble-mote victory over Gonzalez and Greg Schnell, but Dobb found himself slightly off the pace in the 25Oa:Pro moto, leading the first eight laps while Gonzalez spent most of the race working through the tra ffic. With two lap s left in th e moto, Gon zalez cut to an inside line near the rocker section which then set up a midair pass on Dobb for the lead . Gonzalez opened a few bike-lengths lead which he maintained for the moto win. Dobb kicked the ground, obvio us ly upset wi th se co nd, while Sch n ell, Mercier and Billy Frank rounded out the top five. The second moto see me d to mimmick the firs t, w ith Do bb out front bei ng p ursued by Gonza lez. Fra n k a n d Sch ne ll collided on th e opening lap, which opened the door for Mercier to gra b third. Dobb, Gonza lez and Merci er circled the track at the same pace for a nu mber of laps, pulling away from the pack. Soon the race boiled d own to a two-rid e r ba ttle as Me rcier dropped back. On ce again, Gonza lez p roved to be a little faster a nd passed Dobb for the lead . MAR. 45 Arkansas' own Danny Hammond and Dave Barkley stole the show in fron t of 4000+ spectator s during round two of the VDTRA/Performance Nutrition Vin tag e Classics VII Short Track Nati onal Series at Fair Park Coliseum. The Masters class riders gave it their ail with Hammond's Honda holding off a pressing inside· outside a ttac k fro m Dave Barkley ' s Yamaha in Frida y' s heat race an d fina l, giving Hammond the checkers. Satu rda y' s action was even more exciting as Barldey overcame a bad start in the final and moved past the Triumph of Tom laird early on to challenge Hammond for the lead . Hammond was able to hold off Barkley until the very last lap when Barkley moved his Yamaha 750 to the outside in turns thr ee a nd four, carrying the two ride rs side by sid e to the flag. Both rider.; were convinced they had won and returned to the start er for the victory lap, but Barkley took the honors. The spectators in attendance gave a stan d ing ovation as Barkl ey circled the track on his victory lap. Gary Richtmeyer on his Bu llaco con tinued his winning ways, undefea ted in the se ries. He took th e checker s in both 600cc cla ss mai ns . Mark Robinson chased Richtmeyer hard, running a strong second in Frida y's main event and nearly getting by Richtmeyer down the main straight in Saturday's action, bu t his ou tside passing line for<:ed his Yamaha too close to the fence, and after grabbing the binders to avoid collision, he retired.. After thr ee restarts due to first comer pileups, Troy Keithley' s 1000-mile dri ve from Denver was rewarded as he guided his 750 Yamaha to victory in Friday night's 10-rid er Open Pro Twin main. johnny Isaacs on a TPR Specia l Triumph pressed Keithley' Yamaha on every lap, but had to se ttle for second. A tough and determin ed Dallas Babcock took an impressive third despite a very sore shoulder he received when he was cen ter-pu nched in the first green-flag melee. Satu rday's Open Pro Twin main sa w a cleaner sta rt aided by fewe r qu alifiers to the fro nt row. The 80cc Stock (9-11) class is alwa ys compe titive, but the field of 12 riders was no match for Scott Nelson. who won the first go-ro und and then p laced secon d in moto two to Billy laninovich. who had finished third in the first mo to. Cole Humphus was first in the junior Cycle Stock (0-8) class after finishing second to Mar k Pa lmer in th e first moto, th en rever sin g the ord er in th e next race. ATK/Donelson Cycles /MRM / Sprocket Specialists/ Kal Gard / Dunlop / Motorcycle Stu ffsponso red Caplinger was in the back of the pack at the start of the two--hour even t on th e muddy and challenging nine-mile course. By the end of the fll'St lap, Cap linger had his ATKin the lead followed closely by Chris Graber and john Roth on a p air of Yamahas. These th ree trad ed the lead numerous times during th e next few laps as they worked their wa y aro un d mud bogs filled w ith frustra ted rid e rs , a nd u p slip pery hills where they thr ead ed through the scattered bikes and bod ies. Caplinger still held the lead as he , Graber and Roth were the only rid ers in the field of 180 to go out for a fifth lap. Their charmed ride lost its lus ter when all three encountered problems on tha t last lap . Cap linger had to unta ng le barbed wire from his rear w heel and fixed a derailed chain. while Graber and Roth fough t to free themsel ves from the mud at other loca tions on the course. Caplinger finished just seconds ahead of Graber for the overall win . while Roth claime d th ird ove ra ll 90 seco nd s la te r. Kelly Getz br ou gh t his H usq va rna around to ta ke fourth overall at the end of four laps. He was followed seven seconds later by Greg Surd yke riding a Husa berg.
