..c : .... ..... . , . (Above) Kyle Lewis (5) won and kept his points lead at the Seattle ultracross. (Below) Greg Hancock (left) topped the Glen Helen Spring Classic SCratch main. The 45 riders had to deal with thick vegetation, rocks of all sizes, and abrupt, mostly short climbs. Miller pronounced the traction "pretty good," and was caught touching a foot one time in the first loop . Miller is widely regarded as having revolutionized the sport of observed trials when he switched from Ariel and began to develop the lighter, more maneuverable two-stroke Bultaco in the mid-1960s. He now operates a motorcycle museum in En gland an d is a top competitor in pre-1965 trials . One of onl y four riders tackl ing the most difficult of fo ur marked li n es through each section, Miller spent considerable time looking over each section. He w ou ld kick lea ves out of the way and sh uffle rocks whe re they could do no harm, or whe re they would provide a little traction at a critical moment. Charles Roberts, rid ing a Yamaha TY17 found out it's difficult keepin g up 5 with a living legend, and he lost 14 points to take second to Miller in Modem Classic Expert. Making their debut as experts, Mon tesa-mo u n ted Eric Kraft and Rick Doughty were far behind the two leaders. Mill er's second less on for competitors an d fans was exactly that - a lesson. Before offering a d emonstration of riding skills up, down and across a nearvertical hill, he advised vi n tage trials riders to pay more attention to suspension setu p. Miller said he likes his suspens ion to rebound quickly to be ready for the next obstacle. He also reco mmended low ha ndlebars, set forwa rd. "You wa nt to be well to the front an d rea lly gra bbing it," he explained. On gearbox position, Miller emphasized using the bottom gear all the way. "In second," he said, "the bike would be riding me instead of me riding the bike. Go as slow as you can so you have time to think about things." [N Results . RIGID EX: 1. Mike Hosafros (Nor). MickeyThompson U1lracrossSeries:Round 3 Lewis notched his second-straight series w in in fron t of 30,000 race fans and thus extended his points lead to 51 over teammate Brooks, moving closer to his ultimate goal, the se ries championship. "It's nice to have a big cushion in po ints goin g in to th e next round in Utah," Lew is said. " I'm sup er happy with tonight's performance. The track was a little slick but I seemed to have it dialed in," The track, which many riders besides Lewis considered tight in a couple of sections and slick for the motorcycles, pr ovided good passing opportunities as evidenced by the first heat. Chris Ridgeway, Robert Drew and Ray Crumb - all series regulars - ran up fron t, but it was Jason McCormick who w hi p ped the crowd into a frenzy as he moved from the back of the grid to challenge Drew on lap four to take the third position, then surprised both Crumb and Ridgeway with a final lap pass for the heat win. The secon d heat was a Team Noleen show; as both Lewis and Brooks moved past early front-ru n ners Scott Meyers, Anthony Wh ipple a nd Marc Pe ters. Brooks tried to catch Lewis bu t couldn't gain gro und and settled for th e runneru p spot ahe ad of Jim H oll ey. Meyers and Whipple roun de d ou t the top five. As the 18-rid er fin al lined up, both Lewis and Brooks brimmed wi th confid ence on th eir chances to w in, w hile McCorm ick was also confident that his Honda CR125 could run wi th the 250s in th e th e sli ck conditions and tight corners . Ryan Car sli sle an d Rob y Leach inherited front row starting spots, while Crumb an d Brooks sat on row seven and McCormi ck and Lewis landed eighth-row startin g spots. As the green flag dropped it was Carlisle, Me yer, Leach and Peters who moved to the front . Carlisle took advantage of h is front-row start to pull a nice lead on the field by the end of lap two with both Lewis and Brooks easily slicing through the field to run second and third by lap three. Myers, Leach and Crumb rounded out the top six . McCormick was mired in traffic early, but was running fifth by lap four, Up front, Lewis passed Carlisle over the big double, and Brooks followed suit just a couple of comers later. It was an all-Noleen show after that po int, w ith Brooks chasing Lewis for the remainder • of th e main but unable to reel him in . Brooks had to settle for the runner-up . position while Lewis scored the win. McCormick's last ditch attempt to move past Carlisle into third came up short , while Crumb completed the top five. Just as in those even ts, Greg Hancock was on top when the chec kered flag fell at th e conclusion of the Glen Helen Spring Classic Scratch main event. A cold and om ino us wind was just beginning to pick up as the day's four fastest riders made their wa y up to the s tar tin g tapes. Ha nco ck was th e first rider off the line and rode into the first tum clearly ahea d of Vene gas and Man chester, but just inches in front of Faria. As the pack headed into tum two, Faria seemed to drift off his line just as Hancock foun d the deep ou tside cushion and put the dirt to wo rk, pr opelling himself clearly to the front of the four some. Faria , wh o like Man chest er w as running the larger 22" rea r ti re, re mained withi n s tri ki ng d istance of H ancock but was clearly settling into second place, hoping for a Hancock mistake that would never come. Venegas fad ed in the mid dle laps , and Manchester mo ved into th ird place. No more changes in position occurred, and Hancock won going away by half a dozen places. . As the four contestants circled the track on their cooldown lap the wind an d rain opened up , and the majority of the 2800 fans on hand scurried quickly to escape the .rap idl y deteriorating elements. Hancock, Faria and Manchester were scheduled to join Josh Larsen, Billy " Th e Bullet" Hamill, Charles Ermolenko, Brent Werner a n d John Aden in the night's eight-man eight-lap Handicap main event, but both the Handicap ma in and the Sidecar main were cancelled due to the inclement weather, leaving Hancock and Support class winner Brian Pappalardo as the day's only main-event winners.
