Harrell hauls at Willow Springs Road Race By Eric Vincent R AMOND CA. FEB. 19-20 OS , Paul Harren ha s emerged as the rid er to beat afte r w inn ing his second straight Toyota Cup Un lim ited Road Race by Bud weiser Formula On e eve n t during the seco nd round of Willow Spring s Motorcycle C lu b actio n at Willow Springs International Raceway. Ha rre n took the lead o ff the line wi th an excellen t start, but was immediately under pressure from Chuck Graves. The d ice between them caused the tw o riders to qu icl:ly dis tance themselves from the rest of the field . Ha rrell contin ued to lead thro ugh lap two, and his hold on the lead was solid ified when Graves pu lled into the hot p its after his second la p with a p roblem. Graves re-en tered the race 10 seconds later but was now abo ut 13 riders off the lead . With Grav es' se tback, Ha rrell held a co mmand ing lead on his Attack Perfonnance-sponso red Ya ma ha YZFlOOO. In sec ond wa s Peter Chri stensen, with Cu rtis Adams com pletin g the top three. The rema inder of the race saw Graves power his way through the pack in an att empt to once again challenge Ha rrell for the lead . He onl y need ed four laps after his pi t stop to move into third place, but had on ly six laps left to recover lost ground . With each succeedi ng lap, Graves shortened his gap on Harrell and Christensen. As th e fin a l lap sta rte d , Gra ves draft ed Ch ristensen comin g out of turn nine and down the front straight, moving a roun d and rolling into second as he d ipped his motorcycle into the first tum. With less than a lap rema ining, Harrell still had a conv incin g lead and Graves had no time left to mount a challenge. At the finish. it was Harrell with the win followed by Gra ves, second, and Ch ristensen in third. . In the Maxima Racing Oil Formula Two race, Walt Dorsch was ted no time in jumping into the lead off the startin g line. Following him into the first turn were Mark McDonald a n d Rich ie Thorp, who exchanged places a number of times until the fifth lap when McDonald emerged with second and managed to hold off Thorp's continu ed cha llenges. McDona ld next set his sights on Dorsch, w hose attempts to hold him off failed w hen McDonald ran around the insi de o f Dorsch in tum two to take the lead. At the checkered flag, it was McDonald with the w in, Dorsch in second and Thorp third. Results F-l : 1. Paul Harrt"lI (Yam); 2. Ch uck Graves (Suz); 3.
