FEB. 20 Ricky Anderson and Paul Shoen pu t on the show of the day in the Novice class at roun d two of the Arizona Vintage Dir t Racers Association's 1994 MX series held at Mountain View Raceway near Tucson. The duo were never more than a couple of. bike lengths apart and traded the lead abou t 10 times during each of the two motos. Suz uki pilot And erson go t the upper hand each time out, though, and took the overall wi th a two-moto sweep; Rickman-Zundap p rider Shoen was relegated to the runner-up spot ah ead of Kawasakimounted Jeff Guetner. In the Expert race, 1993 AVDRA champion David Boydstun go t his Bultaco Pur san g running excellently and swe pt both motes, leading the opening race wire-to-wire, then coming from a fifth-place start to win moto two . Rick Hinchliff, who was riding a Husky for the first time , led the Expert class at the start of race two, bu t wo und up third each time behin d Kevin Krug h (Hus) . Gene Maple won the Intermediate class wilh a 1·2 score aboard a Mako. Milb randt slipped b y Zitur in turn one, then reeled in Larson on the ba ck str aigh t. As they exited tum four for the drag race to the flag, it was Milbran d t by a nose over a su p rised Lars on . Zitur wa s th ird w ith Dave Jend ro and Ma rk Deal garnering stron g fourth and fifth place finishes . In Ope n Pro action it was Tromb erg lead ing all the way from start to finish . A few lengths behind Tromberg, Zitur and Mike Tehro diced for th ir d with Z itu r gaining th e upper hand. Tehr o was third, ahead of fourth-place finisher Eric Brouh ard. The SOcc B final was a Chelin runa way, but all eyes we re o n the battle th at wa s raging beh ind him. Skip Chr isten son, Jerry Lind vall, Jason Larson and Mike Ledin raced for second as if th ey we re ru n n ing for the lead . At th e halfway point , Larso n moved by Lind vall and Chris tenson for second and set after Chelin . larson closed on Chelin in the final laps, but CheJin was not to be denied . Adam Henrichs had the quickest reactions at the start of the 85cc Mini final and held off heat w inne r Adam Deal and Scott Jendro for the first la p . Deal w as on th e m o ve, how ever, an d sq ueezed by Hen richs in turns one and two of the second lap to secure the lead . Deal cruised home the winner, with Henrichs and Jendro in hot purs uit. Barton, Holstein top Tampa Amateur Supercross By Kyle Myers TAMPA, FI.FEB. 12 Over 150 riders 10 states compe ted in the AMA /Worldsport Tam pa Amat eu r Supercross at Tampa Stad iu m wit h Pat Bar ton and Robert Holstei n being just two of the big winne rs of the da y by topping the 25+ and Pee Wee divis ions, respectively. In the 25+ class, Barton easily won his heat race and was ready for the main. As the main roared off the starting gate , Barton jumped out to an earl y lead over Jeff Reynolds, Mike Pazos, Ma r k Bea mer and Do n Urban . Beam e r a nd Urba n qu ickly d isp laced Pazos w h ile Bart on exten ded his lead. Beamer stepped up his pace a nd closed in on Re y no ld s , as t he JT / Shoei/Smith/ No Limit /UFO/Devol / Factory Co n nection /Bel-Ray / MXA / N-Style/ Dunlop / FMF/ Pro Taper / Mot o Ta ss / American Suzuki-backed Barton flew his RM 250 to a halftrack lead. MN, FEB.6 The Dirt Track Riders Association's four th ice race of the season was he ld on Cente rville Lake, and it turned ou t to be a Lake Mart ha's Ice Racing team benefit as Jeff Milbrand t scored wins in the Open Band 30+ class finals, while his teammate Joe Tromberg topped th e Open A main even t Darrin CheJin grabbed the holeshot when the Op en B main got underway, but Milbrandt soon reeled him in and passed on lap two, then pulled awa y to score the w in . Tro mberg and John Larson also passed Chelin on the next two laps. At the wire it wa s Milbrandt, Tromberg, Larson, and BSA-mou nted Scott Nyman , respectively. Larso n, Dan Zitur and Milb randt we re out fron t at the start of the 30+ main. The three rid- Randall Charron, Da~i Millsaps, Kyle Or r and Cody Roth. Holstein , Charron, Millsaps and Orr pulled away from the field. Orr sailed by Millsaps on a jump to take over third . Millsaps got hung up on the firs t ju mp o f the triples an d restarted just in front of Roth. Holstein then bobbled , and Charro n seized th e op po rt u n ity to take the number-one spo t. Holstein came right back and dove underneath Charron to take back the lead . Charron glued hi mse lf to Ho lstein's rear w heel and tried to slingshot pas t in the last tu rn , but he came up a w hee l short. At the dr op of the flag; series poi nts leader Robert Patt erson grab bed the holeshot, close ly pursued by the rest of the AA class. After a cou ple of lead cha nges on the first lap , Patterson emerged first through the scoring barrels at the end of the first of seven laps around the fast-buttechnical eight-mile course . Patterson conti nued to bu ild a slight lead un til the fou rth lap w hen Dua ne Conner, aboard his Action Sports Racing Yama ha, took the lead. Conner contin ued ou t front until late in the lap, when he at temp ted to pass a lapped ride r and hit a tree head-on, end ing his da y w ith a bad ly damaged front end . Patterson then took cont rol of the race again and had a three- minute lead going into the last la p, but a co upl e of miles into the la p his Kawasaki came to a halt, out of gas. Vahsho ltz rode hi s R.Warden & As soci ates /While Power /Aries Pistons /Federal Wires- sponsored Wood-Rota x to victory in Friday nigh t's main event, while Hofmeister kep t h is Faribault H- D /Bob Rey no lds /Reyno ld s Printing-sponsored Harley on the pol e to take Saturday 's main. The last da y provided the most spectacular race of the weekend as Arme ntrout squa nde red a front-row start, then came from the third row penalty line to pass 13 othe r ride rs and take his Bill Snyder/Snyder's Honda-backed Honda to a popul ar win . "That was really fun ," Armen trout said . " It felt great to pass that many-people." The firs t attempt at starting Su nd ay's Pro ma in saw heat winners Dave Hebb, Hofmeister and Armentrout jump the start, thus they wo uld all sta rt the 25-lap race from near tum four. Fast qualifier James Har t took full advan tage of the half-empty front row to jump into a comfortable lead over Hofmeis ter and ROO I Ha rt. By the en d of lap one , A rme nt rou t had moved int o ninth and was clean ly picking off one to two riders a lap . Lap eight saw Armentro ut move around Recil Hart into third. On e lap later, he pu t Hofmeister away then set his sights on Jam es Hart, and, afte r a six- lap chase , took · over the lead on lap 13. "I wo rked so hard passing all those guys," Armentrout said."When I d id take the lead , I saw it was just th e halfway point and didn't know if I could hang on for the rest of the race." "I did n't know Kris was gaining so fast ; I was just concentrating on missing the hole s," James Hart said . . Possib ly to Armentr out's benefit, the red flag came ou t on lap 15, with Keilly Larkin down in tum three. "I need ed the rest but restart s make me nerVOllS, " Arme ntrout said . Almost unnoticed, Vahs holtz had moved to . four th, and on the rest ar t tu rn one w as very crowded. Hofmeister got the worst break as he d ropped fro m third to si xth. Vahsholtz tem porarily held third, but was quickly bumped to fo u rt h b y Dale Jenneman. As [enneman, Vahs holtz and Hofmeister battled over third, Arme ntro ut and James Ha rt pulled away , finishing 1 ~2 .
