iverfront Coliseum opened its doo rs
to arenacross again as Bud Ice pr esented round se ven of the AMA
National Arenacross Series, and the
weekend 's big winner was Lan caster
Sport Cycle/AXO/Pro Circuit /Motul!
Scott-sponsored Jerom y Buehl, who captured main event wins in Frid ay's 12Sec
main and Dash for Cash, and Saturday's
250cc main event.
Series points leader Grayson Goodman played Mr. Consistent w ith on e
win, two seconds and a fourth-place finish to retain the lead in the series. Jimmy
Gaddis continued to hold second place
with his 1-2-3 finishes, and also pocketed about $1500 for winning Saturday's
Dash for Cash. Misfortune struck Gaddis in the Saturday night 125cc main,
however, causing him to barely finish
the race in 11th place.
"Arenacross is tough to adjust to,"
said Buehl on the podium Saturday
night after winning the 250cc main.
" Gad d is, Goodman and Billy Whitley
have been rid ing the series and are used
to riding this tight stuff. It really takes
some getting used to, and I had to
adjust in order to be competitive.
R
"But it was really great riding here in
my home state with lots of my family
here and all the people from the motorcycle show," Buehl sa id . "Mike Kidd
puts on a great race, and I'm really glad
I was able to come."
FRIDAY
At the start of the 125cc main, Gaddis
nailed the start and grabbed the lead,
but Goodman was faster through the
whoops and overtook Gaddis before the
"Bud Ice" catapult. Gaddis retaliat ed ,
executing a perfect bl ock pass befor e
entering the triple-double section. Whitley was close behind trying to hold off
Greg Rand and Buehl, w ho shadowed
him for several lap s. Travis Hod ges had
to fight his way through the crow d from
h is second-row start a nd picked off
rider after rider during the first ha lf of
the race.
Goodman dogged Gaddis contin ually and slipped by when Gad dis took a
spilL Buehl slipped in to second and
Rand th ird. Gadd is re mou n ted a n d
quickly began to attack Rand, while
Buehl tried valiantly to best Goodman.
Lapped traffic wasn 't a problem in this
main event as all the riders stayed close
and few crashes occurred. To the de light
of the crowd, Buehl found the opening
he had been looking fo r a nd p assed
Goodman just before th e w h ite fla g
came out. Goodman tried to get ba ck
around, but Buehl shut th e door and
held on to take the win ; Good man had
to settle for second. Gaddis fini shed
third ahead of Rand , and Hodges completed the top five.
Th e 250cc main action began w ith
Bue hl nailed th e s tar t of the 125q:
main event, but Goodman shadowed
him for tw o laps until Buehl left the
door open in th e turn before the big
infield double. Goodman cruised
around, picking his way through lapped
tr affic while Buehl held off Gaddis'
charge. Tinney went down hard in the
triple-double section when another rider .
jumped on him from behind. Tra ffic had
to slow while Tinney was down, allowin g the top 10 to lap more riders. Just
after the hal fwa y flags, Gaddis tried to
m a ke his m ove on Bu eh l, but w e n t
down in the same section where Tinney
had crashed . Buehl also wen t down, but
was able to pick it back up and hold on
for second. Gadd is' crash gave Whitley
th ird pl ace, a n d Rand moved into
fou rth. Wh en the white flag came out,
Gaddis was able to remount and finish,
but was in 11th place. Goodman captured the win followed by Buehl, Whitley, Rand and James EickeJ.
When the 250cc main event blasted
off the line, Tinney took the holeshot
honors and held the lead until Buehl
motored past through the whoops.
Hodges quickly followed, overtaking
Tinney for second place. Dupasquier
was charging close behind in fourth.
Goodman and Gaddis were fighting
their way through the pack. Buehl had
no trouble holding the lead from starlto
finish, but Hodges had to fight off Gaddis lap after lap when he moved up to
challenge Hodges for runner-up honors.
Though the leaders encountered heavy
lapped traffic at the halfway point, they
were able to pick their way through
w it ho u t inci d en t. Buehl took the win
with Gaddis second, Hodges third, and
Go odm an ha d to settle for fo u r th .
Dupasquier completed the top five. ~

Richtmeyer roosts Kearney 81
By Mike Zbrozek
KEARNEY, NE,FEB. 5-6
Gary Richtmcyer showed everyone the fast way
ar ound in the VDTRA/Perfonnance Nutrition
Vintage Classics VII Series opener at the Kearney Exposition Center, leading the charge in Saturday's 2SO and 600cc events on identically prepared Bultacos.
.
Richtmeyer showed he was the man to beat.
In Sunday's action, he again won the 600cc class
but could not overcome the fine start of BillSnyder and '7 0s Ascot ve tera n Tim Wolf in Sunday's 250 cc even t, settling for a respectable
third .
Heavy traffic on this liS-mile tracktook its
toll on riders and equip ment as the track began
to break down badly throu ghou t the two-day
eve nt. Good starts led to good finis hes as the
4500-strong crowd cheered on the actio n each
day.
Open Pro Twin, with 14 riders crowding the
main event , had to stumble through numerous
restarts to ge t underway in ea rnest. Multip le
p ile-ups in tum two a nd mo torcycle pancake
stack-ups in tum three, how ever, helped to thin
the cha rging ranks of eager starters.
Saturday night's Open Pro Twin main event
winner Johnny Isaacs wowed the crowd in Sunday's main when he chased down the very fast
and stead y Yamaha 750 of Bob Braunreiter on
the very last lap. Isaacs threaded his TPR Special
Triumph 750 to the inside in tum three to take
the win.
Masters class rider Dave Barkley scored double victories on his Yamaha 750, holding off Dan
Deuble r's Bultaco to win on the first night and
then using a sweeping turn-three pass on the
outside to relegate Deubler to second, again, in
Sunday's main.
