CMCN Golden Slale S orth eries Davis dazzlesat Riverfront MX By John Silva MARYSVIUE, CA, FEB. 13 cott Davis earned wins in both the 125 an d 250cc Interm ediate classes during r ound fo u r of th e CMC North Gold en St ate Nati ona ls at Marysville's Riverfront Park. It was far from ea s y for the PJ1/Wiseco / PowerBar/Donnie Hansen MX Academy-backed Davis, as his wins came only after repeated bat tles with Chad Burleson. The 125cc Intermediat e race began w ith Cory Bauder in front followed by Cory Fuller, Burleson, Da v is and Ian Radich . Bau der held the lea d for tw o laps but lost con trol and visited some of the thick track-side be rry b ushes that grow near the rive r, losing valuable time in the process. Fuller inherited th e lead , b u t h is Yamaha reportedly suffered a seized engine on lap four , and he handed the lead to Burleson. Meanwhile, Da v is closed on Burleson and dogged him to t he fini sh. Bu rl eson held t he final advantage, but only by the na rrowest of margins. Radich, Ryan Leach and Dan Barn ett su rv ived the to ug h, eigh t-lap ra ce to clai m the rema ining top positions. Baud er was quick off the line again in moto two with Davis second, and Burl eson, Fuller and Radich in tow. Fuller mo ved around Burleson to take second on lap two and held fast to the position until the final la p w hen Burleson reclai m ed it. Baud er ' s lea d lasted until lap five whe n the finish-line rockers got the best of him . After coming to a complete stop, Bau der resta rted in eigh th, well behind the new leaders. Davis found ho t lines on ce out front, and he cruised to the finish to claim the win followed by Burleson and Leach. In the 250cc Intermediate first rnoto, Burleson blasted the start and led the pack around the first tum with Davis and Leach lead ing the rest of the field . Burleson he ld on for th ree laps, bu t Davis was not to be denied and took the lead on exiting the san dy back sectio n. "I lo ve that stuff b ack there - it's great," Davis said. "There's a couple of really steep jumps followed by a double. It's the best part of the track." While Da vis was secure o u t fro n t, Burleson's tr oubles continued. Lea ch first challenged for two laps then finally passed, dropping Burleson to third. That order remained constant for the remaind er of the moto with Brent Wu rz and Shad Echelberger posting fourth and fifth, respectively. Vohland s te p p ed u p to fini sh fou rth behind Moore, Bervoets and Everts. Lechien was present for moto two but, battered and bruised , could do no more than circulate near the back of the track before qui tting for the da y. Schmit could not consider coming out for race two as he had suffered a concussion and sore shoulder in the crash. Bolley won after he caught and passed Paul Malin on the last lap. The Ho nda-mo unted Vohlan d crep t up on Italy's Andrea Bartolini to finish third and prevent a Yamaha 1-2-3 finish. Moore was less lucky at the start of moto two and finished 11th, after falling early in the moto. Going into the last race, the overall situ ati on wa s wide open. Bolley led with 30 points, but Malin an d Vohland were tied with 28; Bervoets ha d 26, and Moore and Everts each had 25. Schmit made a surprise appearance in the final mo to, shooting out of the Davis nearly lost the ove ra ll in the 250cc class before the second moto even began when his Kawasaki sudden ly developed a flat just prior to the start. "My race was read y to go to the line when we noticed the flat," Davis said. "M y mech anic, Jak e Mar ks, d id a fast tire change an d somehow got the bike to the line just in the nick of time. l owe it all to Marks for the win." Davis hit the track flying with a second-mota holeshot, and was p ursued by Burleson and Leach. The top three set a pace unmatched by the rest of the field, y.oith Davis showing the fast way around the track. The raging Interm ed iates tore up the track for eight laps, bu t the order re mained Davis first, Burleson second and Leach third, both for the moto and overall score. a Results 125 PRO : 1.
