Nutter nails Clemson AX By Barbara Williams Photo by Loren Williams CLEMSON, SC, FEB. 11 Yamaha-Kawasaki of Johnso n Cit y /TN /ProCircuit / Gea r / Scott / Works Connection-sponsored Mike Nutter was the king of the 2SOcc A class, as 200 riders from nine states conve rged on the T. Ed Garrison Arena at Clemson Unive rsity to do arenacross battle in round four of the AMA Interstate Cycles / Carolina Scrap Processo rs Ca rolina Indoor Wint er Series . Victory Sports pe rsonnel and arena sta ff were pleased at the turnou t of bo th racers and spectators, considering the w eather. Thursd ay night an ice storm nearly im mo b ilized the entire eas te rn seaboard, making travel di fficult if not impossible, and plunging many areas into th e d a rk when trees and ice felled power lines. Nutter finished seco nd in both his 125cc A and 2S0cc A qualifiers . In the 12Scc A, Kev in Wa lker took the win in the first qualifier followed by Nutter, A-class rookie Chad Newton, Marcus Cann on and Michael Bear. In the 125ee A main, Bobby St ovall and Shane Temp leton va u lted to the fro nt a t the drop of the gate and camped out there. Nutter gated thi rd and kept up the pace of the fron trunners un til halfway through the 12-lap eve nt, when he d ropped his Yamaha in the whoo ps. Canadian Bill Wallin, Walker and Chuck Shirley filled out the top five. Whe n it ca me tim e for the 250cc A main , Nutter ha d been able to anal yze his mistake and was determi ned not to repe at it. So de term ined was he that he blasted out of the ga te nearl y in tandem with Tem pleton. Stovall was close at hand. For three laps, Templeton set a blistering pac e, but at the end of the third lap his Suzuki took a bad hop in the set of sma ll jumps lead ing over of the back sectio n to the finish-line tabletop . Templeton' s rear tire sw ung 90 degr ees to the right, at speed, flinging him to the gro und. Disbelievingl y, Nutter took over the lead . Judg ing from past performances, Nutter sho uld have faded to fourth . fifth, maybe even sixth, bu t not tonight. Nutter decided he wo uld stay, an d no amount of pressu re fro m Stovall and Gay lon Dickson could dis lodge him . Lap after lap, Stovall ducked to the insid e, power ed to the ou tside, danced over the whoops an d sailed ove r the monster infield double, all to no avail> he couldn't crack Nutter's defens e. At the finish, Nutter and Stovall hopped onto the tabletop a mere bikelength apart, fi nis h ing 1-2, a n d exchanged high-fives at the track exit after the race . Dickson finished third , wi th Templeton a close fourth, and Wallin compl eted the top five. Results 50: 1. Jay Sloan (ylIm); 2. Michae l Ridge (Yam); 3. Tyler Sh uIIlolte (Yam) ; 4. FEB. 6 Fran k Febbo showed no signs of the serious back injuries he suffe red a few years ago as he cap· tur ed the winning trop hy in the 2SOcc intermediate class at Moun tain View Off-Road Raceway. Rid ing a new Honda after years on a Ya ma ~ ha, Febbo finish ed fourth in the first mo to after losing the third position, which he'd held from the s tart, to Bry a n Ba r tle tt on the fina l la p . Febbo started second to Bartlett in the next moto and turned the tables to finish first and take the overall win. Ba rtlett was s'; rprisingly competitive after a long layoff from riding. Jason Smith led the 125cc Beginners all the way in moto one with Shawn Dunne pu shing him throughout the race. Dunn e started with the lead in moto two and held it while Smith lost the second position to Thomas Stuckey on the seeond lap . Stuckey was not competitive in the first moto after going down on lap two and watch ing the entire field go by. Dunne's 2-1 finishes gave him the wi nni ng troph y wh ile Smith's 1-3 wa s good for second . Rob Dysinger on a 125, after having rid den a 500 in 1993, got the hang of it in moto two to finish fourth after riding with the also-rans the first time aro und. The Senior Novice group was an un usually consisten t bun ch with the first seven riders in moto one repeatin g in the same posi tion in moto two . Ranel Cox Sr., Stacey Miller , Terry Reed, Karl Hering and Roge r Gridl ey wo n the five tr0phi es awarded in the class after assuming their fina l positions on the third lap of both mo tos. Klint laPlante prevailed iii the BOcc Novice class wi th a 2~1 score. In the first moto, he cou ld no t ge t pas t Michael Sullivan, who led the en tire moto. Sullivan rode the first lap of moto two in third position, too k second awa y fro m Taylor Vand erpool on lap two , lost it agai n on the fourth lap and fin ish ed th ird . Meanwhile, Va nd erpool, afte r reg aining second po s iti on from Su llivan , rode steadily but hard to ca tch laPlan te a nd was less t ha n half a b ikelen gth behind as they crossed the finish line.
