After reading the Decemb er 15 issue of Cycle News , I co uldn't le t Hen ny Ray Abram s' article on the Dunlop tire tes t at Daytona (Tire Time, Issue #49) go by without express in g some commen ts . First, my congratulations to Henny. He of fered good insight in to what it w as all a bou t. Ta ke it fr om m e, Daytona is n ' t a track to be scr ew ed wi th . Lap times anythi ng hiss than th ose of the . anticipa ted front runn ers would ha ve been meanin g less to Dunlop beca use it 's th e fr ont ru nne rs tha t Dunlop is catering to. My second point is in regards to Jim All en. Henny says some ver y com plimentary things about Jim and let me say tha t they are all a bsolu tel y jus t ifi ed. Bein g responsible for th e opera tion of motorcycle racin g tir es in today' s market is a highly res ponsible job. Never has the tire-to-motorcycle-to- track equation bee n so con tinuously critical as it is tod ay. In my day , we had a problem n o w and aga in b ut, although I say it myself, except for occasional situa tions (Day tona being one of them), we had it compara tively easy. Good mo torcycle race tire engineers, or coo rdina to rs , as Jim's official title reads , don 't grow on trees. Quite apart from the expertise and everything else tha t th e article referred to, th e other essential ingredien t th at a good tire engineer m ust have is respec t - respec t of riders, te a m mana g e rs, t u n e rs, mechanics and his peers. Jim has earn ed this respect through years of hard wo rk and dedica ted involvement. As I sa id, the Jim Aliens of this world don 't grow on trees. They earn their positions. Keep up the good work Jim, and Dunlop. N~ As I read abou t Sidney Burrows (In The Wind, Issue #50); I reflected on Mother's Day of 1993. I was in an accident while racing at a local trac k. Not until I wa s released from the hosp ital d id I realize that I almos t lost my life tha t day.
