in. be ing only 3.2 miles from the first check and having an easy-to-maintain 20 mph for three miles until the cha nge 10 30 mph. The Ihird check was the real check-in and a tie-breaker at the speed change to 30; several rid ers were caught either ga mb ling or losing thei r concentration. The biggest losers at check three were pre-event favorites Steve Shoemaker and Phil Douglas, who both burned it by two minutes. Check five served to demonstrate who was really paying attention as the odd averages used between checks fou r and five had possible checks spaced miles apart. Shoemaker made his bad day worse by burning check five, but the big story came as Josh Chandler also burned five, by seconds. Although many riders were caught by surprise, most were either in the middle part of their min ute or were able 10 scrub off the time necessary to zero the check. Checks six, seven, and eight were zeroed by all the lead ers, with Ihe second big lesl of the day occurring between check eight and nine, the tie-b reaker check. Cha nd ler, wilh a two-point ho le 10 dig himself out of, rode on the ragg ed edge the whole way, b ut his 3:14 still came up short of the 3:11 recorded by Wood. The 3:22 of Marty Walden led Edie's 3:27 and Glenn Martinson's 3:33. A course-marking p roblem just prior to the finish required that check 10 be thrown out, altho ugh this was no t expected to shuffle the sta n di ngs. At the end, Wood's tota l of 9:51.8 topped the 9:53.8 of Vel winner Walden for ove rall ho nors. Four-stroke winner Martinson's 9:54.5 gave him thi rd ove rall, and second Sports- . man , to narrowly beat the 9:56.1 of Edie. Chandler's 11:51.9 followed, his check five bum dropping him from second 10 fou rth Sportsman, and fifth overall. Resu lts 0 / A SPlSMN: 1. Dave Wood (ICaw); 2. Glenn Martinson (Hon); 3. Baxter was ph ysically in third place going into pit one bu t, once his start time was adjusted, he had the overall lead by the 47-mile gas stop . As soon as Baxter got gas, he wasted no time in taking ove r the p hysical lead, too, as the course headed up into the old mi nin g claims near the ghost town of Jess up.
