Smart racing and a little luck help ed NCY Yamaha-backed Don ovan Mitchell tak e home the top hon ors in the 125cc Ju nior cla ss at Marysville's Riverfront Park. The 125cc machines were the first race of the da y, and the starting lin~ held a number of more experienced riders in addition to the Junior field . Lodermeier stunned his rivals by grabbing the ho lcshot; he was followed around the first tum by Interm ed ia tes Jim my Pie rce, Lance Bollens and Ma tt Gib b as well as Juniors Kevin Sm ith, Do nova n Mit ch ell , and Wa d e Speyer. Lod er meier stayed cool ou t fron t, but was passed by Pierce, Bollen s and Gibb halfwa y throug h th e firs t lap . Lode rmeier co uld n't qu ite kee p pace with the In te rm edi ates, b u t h is attem pt d id allow him to pu t dis tance on the Juni or pack. Lodermeier's lea d began to s hri nk with Smi th and Mitche ll's battle bringing th em into conte nti on. Just prior to the white flag, Smit h an d Mitchell closed to within a few bike len gths of Lodermeier. Contac t between Mitchell and Smi th in the finish-area hai rp in tu m proved to be disas trous for Sm ith as he slammed hi s Yamaha into the clay. Smith remounted qui ckly to give chase, but Mitchell was out of reach and hot on the trail of Lodermeier. Mitchell tried to ga in the advantag e repeated ly du ring the fina l lap, but Lodcrmeier held on to win followed by Mitchell and Smith. Lod erm eier again holes hot moto two. bu t once again the more experienced rid ers passed on the first lap. Lodermeier, Smith and Mitche ll were locked in a tight ba ttle for the clas s lead. The battle con tin ued until lap three when Smi th fell in the same ha irpin tu m as in the first moto an d retired from the race. Suzuki of Winston-Salem / Hamme rhead Graphics/ Team Boyesen rider Shane Tem pleto n rode to both mo to w ins in the 250cc Pro class with strong performances, as Birch Cree k Motors po rts Park closed out its 1993 debut racing season. Ian Fortune was the only rider to even keep Templeton in his sights, but could not work up a th rea t in e ithe r 25 0cc Pro mo to. Kawasa k imoun ted John Morfi! cruised to thi rd ove ra ll for the day by pos ting a 3-3 score over Pete Payne and Robbie Wakefield . Templeton came back to score strong rides in t he 125cc Pro class as well a nd gave Rac e Tech / AXO/ Renthall /CTi-backed Billy Schlag a run for his mo ne y, bu t Templeton fell short of the top spo t. Schlag captured both moto wins in excellen t form whil e Templeton and South Car olina's Chu ck Shirley ro un d ed o u t the top three . Robert Ge r ke n ha s m ad e a tre m e ndo u s recovery to come back from major chest injuries. after a crash earlier in th e yea r, to retain his spot as one of Virginia's top Senior rid ers. He swe pt the 25+ A and 30+ A classes via four moto wins . " l just go t back rid in g a fter my heart got crushed , an d I love thi s pla ce," Gerken sa id . .. ['11 be back." Wh ile Ge rken was ab le to pr ev ail in the 30+ A class wit h rela tive ease, h e wa s met with stiffer competition in the 25+ A divison by the likes of KTM pilot Rickey Joyce and local Allen Alfo rd . Gerken used a stea dy dri ve to wo rk to the front in both mot os whil e Joyce was able to ga me r bo th runner-up spo ts . Alf ord trad ed mo to finishes with Sand y Fulk to ga m e r third overa ll. Fu lk an d recent 25+ A new -corner Sidney Williams rounded ou t the top five. Charlotte t'C's Brian G ra ha m also mad e a strong showing in the Senior B class by taking home the victory in the 25+ B class with dou ble moto wins .
