Donaho motors to Midway Motocross win By Geo rge Hodkinson KEll.OGG, MN, OCT. 10 Pat Donaho used blazing speed and a good tw ist of fate to sco re th e overall w in in the 125cc A class at the Mid way Recreation Park. In the first moto, Dona ho put his Ho nda into the lead with Jaso n Kem pel , Heath Voss , and Pat Ready in tow. O ut fron t, Donaho a nd Kem pel p ut on a good show, setting a fast pace tha t the rest of the class couldn 't ma tch. Donaho held off Kemper's attempted passes for much of the race and eventually bu ilt a sligh t lead by the end of the race as the tw o finished in that ord er. Voss hel d on to thir d and Davd Tait moved up to fourth a t the finis h, Fat e w as on Dona ho's si de for the second m oto . Like the first mot o, Donaho se t an ea rly lead , but hi s ma ste r cy li nde r broke , a nd he ha nded the lead over to Kempel. Ironically , the track amb ulance wa s ca lled off on an eme rgen cy a nd the ra ce had to be red-lJ a gged . O ve ra ll results were cred ited to the first moto . The 125cc B class was run in a do ub le-drop forma t with the 12Sec A class, a nd it wa s Chuck Che sler p utting his Honda into the first comer foll owed by David Sp izman, Jef f Mo rtel , a nd Jody Gaul tney. On the first lap , Spizm an a nd Gaultney had worked past Ch esler and were in a close battle. but the rid er slicing th rough the pack wa s Lee Theis. Theis picked off riders one by one and worked up to second pl ace by th e halfway point. The is and Spizma n ran close for the fina l .two laps with Theis slipping by on the las t lap for the stng le-moto overa ll wi n. Spizman and Gaultney ran a clo se second and third, respectively. Over 300 trail riders from 14 states converged on Mingo County in southe rn West Virginia for the Ha tfield-McCoy Premie r T ra il Rid e . Th e tu rn ou t, more than twice th at a n tici p a ted by event organizers, demonstrates the potential for mo torized recreation in the region, according to the Motorcycle Industry Council. Andy Stacy had problems at the start and cam e aro un d the firs t lap nearly dead las t. Sta cy wa s ha rd on the gas , thou gh , and immedia tely began the di fficu lt task of wo rking his way up th rough th e fie ld. One lap la ter, Stacy wo rked his magic on the two, taking over fourth in the back section of the course . Carso n cru ised easily up fron t for the win. Feist occasionaIly got wi thi n stri kin g of Bron ikowski for the sec on d spot but ne ver proved a se rious th reat. Sta cy was still mak ing up gr ound a t the finish but had to se ttle for th e fourth spot an d Witm e r reli nqu ished the fifth pos ition to Ott. Bronikowski jumped to the earl y lead again in the seco nd mota . Thi s tim e, th ough, it was Fe ist wh o took the lead fro m him on the first lap, thrilling the dedicated crowd by sa iling ove r th e hu ge pl a te a u ju m p si d e by s id e as the y fough t for th e lead. These two wer e foll owed close ly by Carson, Witmer, and Stacy, who was enjoying a m uch better start. By lap two , both Ca rso n, and Stacy ha d go tten by Bronikowski an d we re ap plying p ressu re to Feist. Stacy 's luck turned so ur on lap three when he go t off in the back section of the cou rse.
