; EVENTS The 250cc A class saw Woe rne r and Bear battlin g it ou t for the overa ll. Bea r won the first mota but fell going into a jump in mota two and lost gro und on Woerner. Bear quickl y remounted and was back in hot pu rsui t until the end, but Woerner kept a pace and crossed the line first for the win and the overall victory by virtu e of his 2-1 mota finish es. The Vet A a nd B cl asses s howcased- fas t action as Pagoda's Ca lvi n Leinbach and John Jone s won the respective cla sses . Leinbach's blazing Kawa sa ki was on the heels of Yamaha pi lot Scott Ste vens thro u ghout mota one but couldn't pass him. In mota two, Leinbach did what he had to, and poured it on right 10 the checker for the moto and overall win. In the Vet B class, usual hare-scrambler John . Jones kept up a very heated pace and scored I-I malo finishes for the ov era U. ~ o .. rl H (l) ~ Results (l) :> 50 (4-6) : 1. Ja50rt La_~ (yilm ); 1. Ben Glisson (Ya m); 3. Micha el G ranger (Yam). NMA Minislars /93 Bogard on target at Starwest SX By Tony Alessi MORENO VALLEY, CA, OCT. 24 us t a few weeks after capturing backto-back National Championship titles at the Ponca City and Loretta Lynn's, Team Suzuki's Charlie Bogard was back for more. This time, the target was the inagural Ministars Nationals, held at Starwest Supercross Park, and, once again, the results we re all too familiar. Bogard swept all eight motos in which he competed, nabbing the overall victories in the Super Mini, Championship Challenge, and 14-16 year-old Stock and Modified class races. Bogar d joined over 300 other miniclass riders from various parts of the country in what was tagged as a "minison ly" event. "I wanted an event that would go back to the basics of an allmini race," said pro moter Ron . Henricksen. "All of the factories are out toda y, so top performers will definitely gain some exposure." Pee Wee class racers competed in the morning hours on a specially designed course, and the 60cc and 80cc riders took to the main track in the early afternoon . Throughout the d ay, 35 different classes comp eted , and due to the large number of entran ts, the race schedule ran late. "Due to the overw helming number of po st entries in the Pee Wee classes, the race program ran off sched ule," said Henricksen. The fina l mot o of the day left the starting line at 9:00 p.m. The Sup er Mini race sa w w ha t was arguably the most exciting race action of th e d ay. [ ir i Do sta l a n d Ryan Clark jumped into the top two slots and had an early moto slam-fest. Dostal was the initial lead er, but Clar k decided to force his way pa st with a contact pass nea r the step-u p jump. Not one to be pushed around, Dostal reponded by smashing Clark four turns later when he saw a small opening in a tight switchback. Meanwhile, Bogard seemed content to sit in third and enjoy the show. 'Those guys were just bouncing off each other," said Bogard . "I just waited for them to make mistakes." Dostal opened up a sligh t lead, whi le Clark began to com e unglued. Bogard J 30 saw Clark floundering, and zapped him for second shortly after. Once into seco nd, Bogard closed to Do s tal 's rear fender within onl y one lap . Ab out th e same tim e, Billy Payne joined the lead ers after suffering a so-so sta rt, but crashed hard when he tried to jump four-dee p into the rockers. Bogard jumped past Dos tal for the po int po sition in the rockers, bu t after jumping all four bumps, overshot the following tum. Dostal pounced on the opportunity and dove under Boga rd, but his moment back in the lead would be short-lived. Bogard rebounded with an awesome mid -air p a ss over the track's largest double an d sailed in to the lead. Once into first, Bogard pulled away, all the while jumping fou r-deep into the whoops. Bogard held on for the moto win ahead of Dostal and Clark. The second moto saw Bogard grab the ho leshot and put his bullet -proof riding styl e to work. As he pull ed further and fur ther away from his competitors, Bogard whipped his Suzuki sideways re pea ted ly, showing off for the crowd that cheered him on . Dosta l passed Payne early in the race for second, and maintained a small lead over him for the remainder of the race. Clark, meanwhile, seem ed over -anxious and fell twice before eventually smoothing ou t and finishing fou rth ahea d of Danny Carlson. Cale Wallace was the fastest sev enyea r-o ld of the d ay, as he posted a n impressive four-mote sweep of the Pee Wee Stock classes. Wallace topped Jesus Casillas and Ronnie Gambl e in the Pee Wee Stock class, and best ed Gamble and Joshua Grant in the Pee Wee Stock Expert class. Wa llace met his ma tch in the Pee Wee Mo d ified class, however. Robe rt H arrold rolled up to the sta rting line aboa rd a Pee We e that resembled a Kawasa ki KX60 in not only appeara nce, but in power ou tput as well. Harrold motored to an un contested pair of wins in th e Pee Wee Modified Expe rt clas s whil e Wallace appea red to s truggle wi th clutch problems, but st ill man aged to hold on to second over Casillas. In the Pee Wee Mod ified cl ass, Wallace suffered a brok en front axle in moto one, but rebound ed to w in both the second mo to and th e r u n o ff. Unfortunately, Wallace's DNF in moto one dropped him to third overall behind winner Casillas and Gambl e. ~ Results PIW STK BEG U: 1. Matthew Brewer (Ya m); 2. Matthew Thorp (Yam); 3.
