Veteran off-road warri or Fritz Kadl ec re turned to the site of his only National Hare Scrambles victor y to sco re an upse t win in th e Sec ond - Annu al Sand Hills Charity Hare Scra mbles at Sand Hills State Park. Ha d od ds -ma ke rs been in atten dance, th e smart money would have been on young hotshoes Jim Gray or Donnie Book, not on Kad lec, who retired from racing th ree years ago . The cra ck of the starter's p istol found the Yamahamou n ted tri o of Book , Wayne Int ermill and Gray lead ing th e pa ck across the sand dunes. Gray moved to the point as the lead ers entered the first tree section, but he crashed on logs hidden ben eath fresh snow, tu rning the lead over to Book, wh o also crashed on th e sn ow cove red booby traps . In fact , the first lap tu rned into quite a melee for the A riders, with eight d iffere n t rid e rs tak ing a tu rn in th e lea d am ids t a grea t deal of involun tary gymnastics. Kadl ec was in eig h th, five minutes beh ind Gray, and was acquainting himself with the KX he had bor rowe d for the event. A strong cha rge by Donn ie Book placed him at the front of the pack by the end of the second lap. He was followed by Eme rson. Gray, Bila, In termill and Kadl ec. At this p o in t, Kad lec pi tted and excha nged his heav y winter gloves for some lighter rid ing ones. "After I changed gloves, the bike felt twen ty pounds ligh ter , I s tarted flying," Kadlec said . Durin g the third lap, Kad lec cha rged from sixth to first p lace_ The youngst ers weren't abo ut to roll over and admit defeat, though, as Gray and Book came through the scoring lane right on the veteran's rear tire. Disast er struck Book, how ever, on the fou rth lap wh en he ran head-on in to a rider traveling backward on the course. He wa s forced to retire with an injured wrist. The battle remained intense be tw een Kad lec an d Gray . Kadlec maintained a 21l-second lead through the fou rth and fifth lap . Gray found a bit more speed on the sixth and final lap but was still ten seconds behind a t the ch ec ker ed flag . Rick Emerson put in a consistent ride , finishing thi rd overa ll. Chuck Graves was quickes t off the line in the F-I event and put himself into the early lead followed by Chr istensen and Paul Harren. At the end of the first lap, Harren draft ed Christensen down the fron t straigh t and moved a round the outs ide of him, going th rough tum one to move into seco nd . A lap later, at the same spo t, Graves found himself suddenly pu shed back into third a fte r being pa ssed by bot h Harrell a nd Chri stensen . The ba ttle for the lead continued as Ha rre ll, Christ ensen and Graves were di cing back and forth for the top position. At the same time , a sign ificant ba ttle was shaping up for fourth place between Bruce Tebo and Jim Van Vegten. Going in to th is race, these two riders were separated by only one po int in the F-I class cha mpionship stand ings, and this eve n t was critical for bo th in their pursu it of winning the title. As the riders started lap four, Tebo powered a round th e ou ts ide o f Va n Vegten in tum one, putting himself in fourth. Mea nwhile, Harrell wa s s till lead ing th e pa ck, but Christense n was n ' t going to let him get away. Starti ng the six th lap, Ch rist en sen dropped into the inside of tu m one and passed Harrell. For the next six la ps, Christensen pr oceded to slowly open the gap betw een himself and the rest of the field. In lap eight, the lead ers encou n te re d la p ped tr affi c, a nd Christ en sen u se d that to his adva ntage to s tre ngthe n h is lead. With only tw o laps rema ini ng , Teb o was suddenly all ove r the tail of Graves, and in the fast, sweeping tum eigh t, he passed Grave s on th e outside o f the turn, putti ng h imself into third. At the same time, Christensen suddenly found his hold on the lead had slipped away, and he foun d himself back in second after being passed by Harrell. On lap eleven, Christensen put himself back in the lead, but his hold on that spot was fragile as both Harre n and Tebo were just behind him and looking for every opportunity to get by. In turn eigh t, Tebo took a fin al sho t at p assin g Harre ll, but came up short. At the finish, it was Christense n with the win , Harrell in seco nd an d Tebo rounding ou t the top thr ee.
