AHRMAISC UVintageMotorcycleClassic:Final Round R • • VINTAGE • arrow, rl It reat at o Ister By Matt Hilgenberg HOLLISTER,CA,OCT.I6-17 teve Darrow and Morrill Griffith were the stars of the show as the vin tage sporting season wound do wn at Hollis ter Hills OHV Park . Santa Clara Riders Unlimited (SCRU) put on a fanta stic two-day event that included a bike show, swap meet and round eight of the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Assn. (AHRMA) Nationa l Trials Series on Saturday, and the final round of the AHRMA /Vintage Iron National MX Series on Sund ay. S Trials Saturd ay's observed trials was laid out by Starman Productions' Mike Fenner in the woods below the MX pit area. Eight secti ons were rid den four times eac h, and co mpe tito rs w ere given a three-hour time limit; since a rider could begin the loop at any section, traffic was minimal for the 43 entrants. Former Yama ha factor y trials rider Steve Darrow put in the best ride of the day on h is n ew AJS 500cc Premier Heavyweight-elass machine. Riding the most-d ifficu lt "o n e" line through the sections, Darrow emerged with a score of just five, one better than the winner of the Modem Classic division, Bultacomoun ted John Moore. The largest class of the day was Modem Classic Novice, with 12 entri es. San Jose's Bill Ripley, on an Ossa, wa s the victor, two po ints clear of a three-way tie for third. . 28 Motocross With 430 entries, the motocross was the largest ever on the west coast. Riders from 13 states and five countries competed in two rounds of 22 motos each. Although the day wa s long, the track stayed in good condition and the racing was entertaining. As has become a tradition at HoUister, SCRU in vited a stellar list .of pa st masters to compete in a one-mote exhibition race. Buck Murphy led the blazingly fast event until two straig htaways from the end, when his Maico began to ru n poo rly an d backfire. This allowed Billy Grossi to take the victory after a mid pack sta rt. DeSoto also nipp ed by Murphy before the finish. Intermediate-dass rider Griffith was th e to p p e rformer in the re g u lar AHRMA classes, taki ng w ins in th e 12Secclass, Division B of the 500cc class and Division A of the +30 class, and finishi ng second to Su zuki rid er Mark Brooks in the 250cc Intermediate Division B race. Th e Co lorado re sident switched back and forth betw een a Honda, a Yamaha and a Maico in the four events. Three of th e Past Masters d ivision participants also competed in the +40 Expert race, but non e could match the pace of Montesa VR pilot Randy Lewis, who took the overall ahead of Rory Muscatell, Dave Aldana, Tom Rapp and Doug Grant. An unusual sigh t was found in the Premier 500cc and Premier 500cc II Novice classes in the form of an early '60s four-stroke Husqvama rid den by Britalia Motors' Joe McCoy. The teenager won the 500cc II race over Fred Royce Jr ., wh ich ga ve McCoy the N o rC al Series class championship. In Premier 500, McCo y wa s second behind BSA rider Robert Lindsey.
