"This is wierd," said Chris Carr. "I s ta rted racing min ibikes here at Lodi Cycle Bowl back in 1973, and now 20 years la ter he re I am back doing the same thing." For Carr, it was only the second time that he h a d competed aboard his Engines Only / Arai/StaciHall /Dunlop/Hap Jones/Sunoco/Supertrapp/ Yoke-backed minibike, and for the secon d time, the former Grand National C ha mpion emerged the winner when the dust finally settled at the end of the 25-lap ma in event. Chasing Carr across the finish line at the Lodi Cycle Bowl/Engine's Only-promo ted event were road racer Kenny Roberts Jr. and ll-year-old Toby Jorgenson . "I basically just got out front and rode the pace I had to in order to win ," said . Carr. "I expec ted Kenny to give me more of a run, but his bike was u nderpowered. I guess it was clapped out from all of th ose la ps a t Hickman. Little Tob y woul d ha ve d efin itely been mo re of a factor if he had gotten a better start." C The race was held in conjunction with the regular Lodi M.e. Saturday Night IT Races, and the loocc class boasted nearly 50 entries in the four d ifferent classes. The Expert class drew 26 entries, each of them anxious to earn their share of the $1500 in purse and contingencies. Heats The Expert field was d iv ided into three five-lap heats that each offered four direct transfer pos itions. Eric Bostrom pulld the holeshot in the opening race, but on the second lap surrendered the lead to Engines Only president Frank Nye, who went on to score an easy win . Bostrom held on to second ahead of Rob Damron, while John Hlebo edged o ut Gary Rogers for the final di rect transfer posi tion. The second hea t was all Kurtis Roberts, as he led the race wi re-to-wire over runner-up Matt Wait, who piloted the o nl y Suzuki in the field. C h uck Sorenson and Paul Iwanaga finished out the top four. The third heat offered a prelude of wha t wou ld come later in the main event. Roberts grabbed the holeshot and led "ho me town favortie" Carr for the first three laps . Carr found a way past on laps four and motored off with the win over Roberts and Jorgenson. Mark But ler nabbed the fourth and final direct transfer. Riders who failed to quali fy directly fr om a hea t ra ce compe ted for one of National Nye jumped into the lead at the star t of the 25-lap National and led Carr, Roberts [r., Wait and Ku rti s Robert s through tu rn one. Car wa ited until lap three to make his move, and passed Nye as they raced out of the infield. Mea nwhile, th e rid er o n the m ove was Jorgenson. After starting the on the second row, the youngster completed lap one in 10th , b ut by lap 10 had moto red all the way up to fourth behind Carr, Nye and Roberts Jr. Behind the top fo u r, Roberts and Silva waged a priva te war over fifth. Silva took control on lap 13. By lap 15, Carr enjoyed a comfortable lead, but continued to push after seeing that Roberts Jr. had gotten past Nye. For Nye, the trouble wasn't over yet, as Jorgenson began to breathe down his jersey as well. On lap 18, Jorgenson powered past Nye and into the place position, and this set the stage for the finish . Carr, Roberts Jr. and Jorgenson were evenly matched and the remaining seven lap s were relatively une ventfu l. Carr g ree ted the checkered flag in first, wit h Roberts Jr. raci ng home second ahead of Jorgenson's Redline Oil/Malots Hond a/Stockton Honda/ Tom 's Sa nd Hill Ranchsponsored machine.
