Rentzell and Frankenfield were close behind in the battle for second while Patterson moved up to fourth. Allen was rid ing in his nonnal aggressive style, not so much riding the track as attacking it. At the fin ish, Allen held a comfortable lead. Patt erson got past Rentzell but could not deal with the advantage of Frankenfield's machine and knowledge of the track. Despite not running for mon ey like the Suzuki riders were, Allen still felt like he had something to prove. " I don't care that these guys are running for money. I'm not going to move over for anyone. Just because these guys win races all over the country doesn't mean that they are going to have an easy time here (at Putnam Park)," Allen said . HItproves that there are some very fast racers in this part of the country." Allen also won the C Superbike race and Saturday's Mediumweight 50 -Miler on h is Honda. Ray Litton passed Geoffrey Wilson on the final lap to win the Heavyweight 50- Mile race. Canadian Frank Wilson was the dominant Novice rider on the day. Wilson was virtually unbeatable in the North Central Region this season, and his remarkable year continued as he won all five races that he entered, finishing well up among the Experts in the combined races. " I' m looking forward to going to Road Atlanta this year," Wilson said. "It will be fun to see how I stack up against the riders from other parts of the country." Other multiple winners for the weekend included Expert Eric Smith and Novice Richard Breeding. Results , 125 BEG: 1. Jeremy Hunter (Hon) ; 2. Dan Sail" , (K.aw);.,3 . Lo ui s M"urelte (Ho n ); 4. D. Thompson guns lem down at Glen Helen Grand Prix By Scott Hoffman 32 SAN BERNADINO, CA, OCT. 10 Mini rider Chris Thompson overcame repeated crashes to take the victory in the SOcc Novice class. during California Racing Club's Gremlin Grand Prix at Glen Helen OHV Park. At the start of the grueling 45-minute race it quickly turned into a two-way battle between Kawasaki riders Thompson and Shawn Mitchell. Thompson had the earl y lead as the two riders went at it. Thompson seemed to be the faster of the two riders, but crashes plagued him during the race. Thompson first went down during the opening lap, but managed to get back into the race quickly. Thompson reeled in Mitchell and re-took the lead . As the two riders jockeyed for the top spo t, disaster struck Thompson for the second time; just past the halfway point he crashed again. The race seemed to be in the bag for Mitchell as the time kept ticking away. Thompson's persistence endured, and he raced to take the lead away from Mitchell. On the last lap the race really started to heat up. Thompson led Mitchell going into the back section, but when the riders emerged from the back , Mitchell held the front spot. Thompson was not ready to give up what he worked so hard for as the race literally came down to the wire. Mitchell was leading going through the last tum of the race, but the problem was that the double jump, which Thompson was capab le of clearing. was the only obstacle between the riders and the finish. Thompson pulled out all of the stops and jumped past Mitchell to take the lead and the win. Mitchell had to settle for second as Joel Nelson rounded out third. In the 250ec Intermediate class, Kawasakimounted Jeff Ratzloff rode an impressive race to take the victory. Ratzloff managed to pilot his '94. KX to the lead past the entire field of Intermediates and Pros. Loren Jenkins and Everret rounded out the top three sp ots in the 250cc class. Results P/W A; 1. Blake MiteheU (Yam); 2. Allen upsets National riders at Putnam Road Race By Larry Lawrence Mr.MERIDIAN, IN OCT. 10 , Suzuki contingency money attracted a few of WERA's best Superstock racers to the final WERA race of the season in the north Central region at Putnam Park, but local rider Lanny Allen showed the more established stars that the home-track advantage can be hard to overcome. Allen, riding a Honda CBR600, won three expert races during the weekend , including the C lit Superstock race. Suzuki rider's Kevin Rentzell and Steve Patterson pulled to the starting grid of the C Superstock fmal with every intention of winning the $500 first place prize money Suzuki was offering for the dass. OCT.3 After puncturing the fuel tank on his grandfather 's van w ith his load ing ramp, Georgie Price made amends and some money for a new tank by taking the 600ec Pro and newly added Sportsman classes at Trail-Way Speedway: Also taking a pair of wins teammates Warren Diem in the 600cc A and Veteran classes and Tom Skethway in the 200cc and 2SOcc B classes . The Sportsman class was added so the hot A riders could run against the Pros. which nonnalIy run their own class. The lineups were very similar. The Sportsman had Price putting his TShirts Inc./Dorsey Builders/South Jersey Speed Shop-sponsored Rotax in front of Kevin Varnes, Rob Majeski and Jim Hollister. Majeski took second on the second lap as he and Varnes battled over second and Varnes displaced Majeski on the sixth lap. Off a .co m p lete restart after two laps, Price again grabbed the lead from Majeski and Varnes. While the front three stayed very close, another close battle over fourth developed between Chuck Buchanan. Eddie Hidden and Gary Oark, with Hidden finally taking control on the sixth lap . Diem al so grabbed the lead in both of his finals, with Miller , Wherley and White trailing. At the start of the second lap, White took second, with Tom Majeski third. After battling White for second, Majeski took second on the fifth lap . The 600cc A final had Wherley, Majeski and Winsett, Majeski taking second off tum two on the second lap, while Winsett got into a heated battle with Lynch, Libhart and Wherley. Winsett came out on top. Todd Winsett regained his winning ways, taking the 250cc A final from Paul Lynch while Oarence Bull again took the 750cc A final. Brian Eckhart made his first start in several years winning one as he took the Rabbi Racing/Jim Hollister Rotax to a win in the 600cc B class. The minis had Brian Phillips taking the 55cc (4-6), while Danny Guiseppe took the (7-8) division. Corey Hormes again took 65cc honors while Jake Johnson took the 85cc final. Results 2SO A; 1.
