Powell, Kugel survive Land of Enchantment Dual Sport By Claud Hauper CLOVIS, NM, SEPT. 26-30 It took the likes of Ove ra ll A wi nner, Team Dua l Dogs' Damon Powell. and the ultra p repared B class winner , Ken Kuge l to conque r the exten· sive mil eag e a nd the tig h tly tim ed and sometimes ruggedly tough sectio ns included in New Me xico ' s s eco n d Land of Enchant me n t Endurance Rally. "This new form of competition we are promot ing is not the same as a high speed, closed co u rse , ' ra id -ma ra thon '," said Ra lly Dire cto r Roger Patti son. " Bu t rather a rig idly controlled test of end ura nce and preparedness over long off-highway dis tances in several da ys." Over 1668 miles of the d iverse eastern New Mexic o landsca pe took its toll as Po we ll a nd Kugel were the onl y tw o en tries out of 40 that actually crossed the fin ish line at the end of the fou r·day event. In fact, at the end of da y on e Kugel was the sole Bclass rid er to Finish ..-.:ithout ho uring out After a " regu la r" 7:00 a.m. start on day two, the ride progressed from desert and p lains to the coolness of the mountains in the second d ay. The change of clim at e at 7000 feet w as welco med . Tea m Du al Dogs Pr es id ent Damon PowelJ was the p icture of p rep a red nes s as he skipped through the ll-hour d ay with no problems and no lost po ints . " No problems. It was awesomc, all of it was a wesome the whol e da y." Powell said . Day three's 7 a.m. sb rt didn 't take much lime on Wednesday, as the four rem a in ing riders de pa rted the sb ging arca jus t outside of the historic Lod ge at Clo udcro ft, wher e Panc ho Villa used to vacation high in the cool mounta in calm. Stage three was one of ultimate d isappointment for two of the riders, yet the kind of spo rtsmanshi p and comerad erie tha t typi fies thes e events became even more eviden t and critical to the over· all results as the da y wore on. Glenn Butler had epitomized the spi rit of spo rtsmanshi p, when his mai n riva l Da mo n Powcll lost an oil resevolr drain plug and du mped all his engin e oil in the midd le of the desert. While given the opportuni ty to fo rge decisive ly a head, Bu tl er promp tly stopped. "(My) oil plug just vibrated out and I'm just ridin ' along and all of the sudden I noticed a lot of friction in the cylinder and (I) pulled the clutch and the thing seized ," Powell said. " I was out of oil and had no bolt, and Glenn . who was ridin g with me and was leading in points,... gave me a plug and aqua rt of oil he was carrying." In spi te of everyone 's effo rts to help each ot her, jus t before the last a nd mos t difficu lt two sec tions of the tou ghest day, Butler's Honda's rear frame section broke th ro ugh an unbelievable number of zip ties to se pa ra te itself completely from the rest of the bike, thus ending his bid for a repea t o f last yea r and any chance to fmish th is eve nt. With Kugel hav ing only ridden the d ay to p rove he co uld , and Damon Powell likwise having outlasted all competition, the second Land of Enchantment End urance Rally was effectively over wh en they both checked out of d ay th ree's fina l seclion. With nothing lef t to pro ve, the winni ng riders and the always-ready sw eep crew rod e the rall y rou te the last 373 . mites in to Clovi s on Th ursday ba sically in the fashion of a du al-sp ort trail ride.
