eEVENTS m John Chapman (9) dueled with John Barnett (10) at the inaugural Glen Helen GP. World Championship SX: Round 1 Results C ooperblasts Swedish SX Buddy Antu nez (Hon); 4. Jorgen Nilsso n (Hon); 5. MAIN: I. G uy Coo pe r (Suz); 2 Larry Ward (Suz ); 3. By Alex Hodgkinson GOTEBORG, SWEDEN, OCT. 9 u y Coop er, rid ing out his motocross career in Europ e before switchin g to e n d u r os in 1994 , emerged as the winner of th e opening round of the World Supercross Championship in th e Scandinavium indoor arena. Big European names we re in sh or t supply at th e points-scoring event, as many Eu ropeans had boycotted the event. Americans secured the first three places as Larry Ward arid Buddy Antunez chased Cooper home, while Swede Jorgen N ilsson was the best European with a fourth-place finish. Ward, so often a winner in Europe, had been the big winner in the Spanish capital of Madrid one week earlier and was again victorious in a non-championship race in the Swedish stadium the day before the championship opener when Cooper's Suzuki threw a chain. Saturday's racing was more professional on the small track which saw the winners of the main events complete 25 laps in 12 minutes and 30 seconds . Cooper hit the front earl y, and although there were seven riders on the lead lap, there were few position changes in Cooper's wake. It was only in the closing laps that Ward was able to get close. A pass was not po ssible, ho wever, on the narrow track. The difficulty in pa ssing had been a major contributory factor in the elimi na tion of seven of the 12 Americans, incl ud ing Phil Lawrence, Ezra Lusk, Mike Craig, Mike Jones and Kyle Lewis before the championship main. Craig, who was runner-up to Jeff Stanton in last year's series, hurl a wris t when he went down with Jones while disputing the lead in their heat race. Difficulties behind the scenes have restricted the 1993 World Supercross Championship to just five rounds, but the outlook for 1994 is positive. After a meeting w ith the F1Mand industry officials on the day after last month's Motocross des Nations in Austria, a package was agreed upon which should see nine rounds - two injapan, one each in the USA and Australia, and five in Europe. m G 22 DarryU King (Kaw ); 6. AMA D 37 Desert Series istrict Davis dazzling at Glen HelenG P By C h ri s Jonnum SAN BERNARDINO, CA, OCT. 2-3 len Hel en OHV Park's first-ever "real" grand pr ix was billed as a throwback to the enormously popu lar (but now defunct) Great Bear, Hopetown, Elsinore and Riverside GPs, and the turnout mirrored tho se events with a whopping 663 entrants. But of them all, Team Green's Ty Davis drew the most attention, d ominating ev ery lap in the highly competitive Pro class and leading the 175cc Expert division until he voluntarily dropped out. Like the popular southern California GPs of yesteryear, the Malcolm Smith Motorsports/GFI/Pro Circu it/Answer/ Fineline/White Bros./Clark Kawasaki! Welding Works-sponsored event featured a long course with a variety of terrain. The eight-mile loop utilized several areas of the facility that even Glen Helen regulars had never laid eyes on, including a fast sandwash, tight canyons and a tricky set of hillside switchbacks; a lap around a smooth dirt speedway oval was even included. Water trucks were not able to access some of the more remote sections, so dust was a de finite factor, especially in the earlier classes. As the first day wore on though; several minor course changes were made and longer water hoses were used, and by the second day thingswere running quite smoothly. "Ever since the Riverside Grand Prix disappeared a few years ago, I've seen a real need for an ev ent like thi s," sa id promoter Gene Romero. "Glen Helen being what it is, I figured it would be the perfect place to do it , and (park manager) Joel Smith was enthusiastic. I contacted the Prairie Dogs M.e. and was impressed with how professional they were. Just like anything else, the first time you do some th ing y o u ' r e going to have some problems, but we fixed most of them and we're already looking at what we Can do to. make next year even better." G The Prairie.Dogs may have been the presenting cl ub, but the riders in the Uncla ss if ied d iv ision fel t more like gu inea pigs as they lined up for the first hour-long race of the Inaugural event. A large 128-rider field required that three s ta r ti ng waves be utiliz ed r-w ith the Open bikes leading the wa y, 250s fol lowing, and th e 125s b ringin g up the r ea r. No soo ner had t he fi rst wave . roared off th e d ead-en gin e s tart than club me m bers scrambled to ma ke the first course cha nge; a nasty up hill ha d caused a bot tleneck that had to be sorted out before the fidge ting 250cc ride rs could be released. As awa rd s are not handed out for the Unclassified d ivision, all three dis placem en t g r o u p s were sc o red to g e the r d espite the fac t th a t th ey ha d s ta rted separa te ly . Hon da-mo u nte d Robert Lau gh lin, of the Shamrocks M.e., was the overall winner aboard a CRSOO, w ith Team Green's David Ondas crossing the line as the runner-up. "That was a fun course, but the sandwash was a little hairy," said Jon Mayer, who finished 67th on a CR250. "There wer e hidden rocks in the sand, and you co uld n' t see anything because of the du st, but guys were flying past me like they could see just fine! Maybe I'm just a wimp." In the much-anticipated Pro cla ss la ter th at day, Team Green/Xtreme / Sho ei / Si d i / End ura / Smi th / LR Enterp rises-sponsored Davis sna red the holeshot an d steadily increased his lead wi th every lap . Larry Roeseler followed his team ma te in second throughout the race, finishing well ahead of third-place finisher Joh n Flores. Davis collected $400 for his win . Davis borrowed Team Green technician James DeGaine's KDX200 for the 175cc class, and after p ulling another holeshot, looked well on his way to collectin g that win as well . Davis was using the race primarily as a chance to practice, however, and dropped out about midwa y through in order that he wouldn 't be protested for hi s 25cc "advantage." Roeseler was the benefactor of Davis' honesty, taking over where his protege had left off and directing his KXl25 to the win. Roeseler led at the end of the first lap in the 132-rider-strong Vet class, but Honda's desert ace Dan Ashcraft had taken over by the time the second circuit was completed . Roeseler had trouble and dropped out, leaving Ashcraft to co ll ec t the w in ahead of teamma te Chuck Miller . m Res ults PRO: 1. Ty Davi s (Kaw); 2 Larry Roeseler (Kaw); 3. John Flore. (Hon); 4.
