Procida MORENO VALLEY, CA,5EI'T. 9 Michae l Flowers put in a good sho wing with 2-1 moto fin ishes to take the overall win in the highly com p et it ive 250cc Beg inner cla ss during Starwest Supercr oss Park's "Sa tu rd ay Ni ght un der the Lights" racing act ion. After ta king the holesh ot , Flower s led the majority of the first moto on ly to lose the lead to Judd Scanlan on the last lap whe n Flowers lost control in the the whoops and went down. Nic laBella ga ted well, went down on the second lap and spe nt the res t of the mo to playing catch-up, finishing in the num ber three slot behind Flowers as Scanla n took the w in. Round in g ou t the top five s lo ts were Karl Scan lan and Matt Parsons. Mo to two sa w LaBella holeshot with Flowers, KarJ Scanlan and Parsons in close company. At the back of the pack was Judd Scanlan who was doi ng everything in his power to wo rk his way up to the front, As laBella chose to single the '"Twin Peaks" double, Flowers we nt for the big ai r, made it clea nly a nd closed to laBella's rear fender. Judd Scanlan utilized the do uble jump to put himself into four th behi nd his dad, closed in and made the pass in the do uble-double. At the midpoint of the race, Jud d Sca n lan agai n wen t for the "Twin Peaks" jum p, but this time ca me up sh o rt, s la m m ing his bo d y up against the upper tank and triple clam p asse mbly. The yo unger Scanla n was shaken and was forced to pu ll off the track . The elder Scanlan sto p ped to in vestigate, whic h th rew the stand ings into total cha os as the top three slots now be lo nged to LaBella , Flo wers a nd Pa rsons. Flowers was ge tting frustra ted following laBella ar ound, and with tw o la p s left in th e moto, Flow ers leaped the "Tw in Pea ks" once ag ain. This time his aerial antics earned him the lead . It was not go ing to be a cakewalk by any me.'lns as laBella stuck to Flowers' rear fender just waiti ng for a mistake. With two comers left, laBella entered the whoops in an unfamiliar section of the obstacle and a ttemp ted to power his way past Flowers. It resulted in a hard getoff for the RM rider, and he wound up losing second to Parsons before he was able to restarL Up front, Flowers took the checkered for the win and the overall as Parsons second moto finish would boost h im past both Scanlans. CA.SEIT.12 Ral p h Colli ns a n d Steve Z imme rman, both members of the No rthern California chap ter of the Ove r The Hill Gang, made the drive down to Southern Ca liforn ia pay off as they collected the ove rall wins in the Novice a nd Beginner classes, respec tive ly, at the sou thern chap ters motocross a t Los Angeles County Raceway. Scott Wallace had the quickest reaction time to lead Grad y Gillette a nd Ca rlos Mari n at the start of the first Novice moto, Gillette overshot a tu rn handin g second place to Marin. Marin quickly had his hands full with Gillette trying to repass, John Rizzo tryi ng to get around both of them and Colli ns wa nti ng to pass eve ryone. Collins quickly put the mo ves on Rizzo a nd Gillette to move into third behind bard-to-pass Ma rin. Mari n was making Collins work for the p ass, using every line on the track. Collins fmally out-braked Marin going into a tum and set out after lead er Wallace . Within a lap, Collins made his pass on Wallace at the end of a jump-filled straight, Collins said goodbye to the res t of the pack. ta king the checkered flag with a Hkecond lead. Wallace took a lonely second with Rizzo thi rd. Gillette spent the entire moto looki ng for a way around Marin, finally d oing so on the white flag lap for fourth. Gillette edged ou t Rizzo for the seco nd -mo to holesho t. Colli ns w as runn in g fift h be hi n d Wall ace and Joe C hu rill a. A lap la ter, Collins was up to thi rd and p ressu ring Rizzo . It d idn 't take lon g for Collins to d isplace Rizzo to th ird and catch Gille tte. Collins used a longer, fas ter outside line in a tum to grab the lea d . Collins eas ily led the rema ining laps to take the checkered lIag going awa y. Gillette took second in the moto but not wi tho ut a great end--of· the-moto effor t by WaJIace. On the final circu it, Wa llace le t it all ha n g o u t, making severa l se ri o us attempts at the runner~up position only to come . up a few fL'Ct short at the finish. Tim Whisna n t go t things off to a good start in the first Beginner class moto with a holeshot. He was followed by Dan Smith a n d John Curra n. Whisna nt led fo r a lap before be ing passed by Brian Holliman, who was charging from his fourth-place start. Curran al so got around Whisnan t who would eventually fade to eighth. Zimmerman and Jay Mcl.ey were working towards the front afte r mid-pack starts and moved into third and fourth place, respectively by the half-way poinL Holliman was untouchable, taki ng the checkered flag with 15 seconds to spare. Unfo rtunately for Holliman, after the moto the ornG officials docked him a lap for having incorrect numberplates on hi s b ike, which d ropped him to 14th. Curran wa s handed the At T im Whisnant (57) tried to hold off John Curran (53) at the LACR's OTHG MX. first mot o v ict ory , with Zi m me rman second . McLey a ppe ared to have third p lace in the bag. bu t oversh ot a tum dropping to fourth behind Scott McDonall. Smith led the pack through the first tum in moto two wit h Robert Ruder and Zimmerman close behi nd . With a lap com plete, Ruder went down in the sa nd giving Zi m me ra mn a clea r shot at Smith. Zimmerman slow ly reeled Smi th in, watching his lines, Zimmerman made h is move by cutting ins id e Smith in a comer, onl y to get out-ju mped by Smith on the following straight, Zimmerman passed Smith in the sa me spot a lap late r, and Smith wasn' t ab le to retaliate th is time .
