Ryan rockets to Perris MX win
By Tony Alessi
PERRIS. CA. SEPT. 18
Joe Ryan do mina ted all four motos of bo th the
125 and 250cc Novice G asses while en- route to
a double-class victo ry du ring the GFl " Dolla r
Day" MX a t Perris Raceway .
The event wa s uni que in that racers only had
to pay $1 for their race entry. A great track and
low cost racing brou ght smiles to the faces of the
over 500 riders who a ttend ed. the histo ric: race.
"T his is my last novice race, I h op e to do
well today and get so me exp osu re" Ryan said
before the start of his first 250cc Novice mota.
Bret Milan , Rya n a nd Jason Field s battled
d uri ng the ope ning lap of the first 250cc Novice
mota . Ryan was on the gas and glided into the
lead , then si mp ly left th e competition in th e
dust Fields worked on Milan earl y in the moto
and mad e the p ass fo r second on la p th ree.
Fields sett led into the second spo t after discovering that Ryan ha d opened more than a 1ll-seca nd le ad. Ryan Carroll mad e a sp ecta cu la r
cha rge from outside the top 15 to fifth by the
end of the mo ta, finish ing behind Ho nd a rider
David McCown.
The second moto sa w Milan again out front
with Steve Wamboldt an d Ryan in tow . Ryan
followed them both for a lap before he turned
up the wick and pa ssed them both on the back
stra igh t to take over the lead . Ryan once again
sh o wed raw speed and opened a la rge gap.
Wamboldt made short wo rk of Milan for second
bu t was no match for Ryan , who was rid ing a
near flaw less mota. Carroll cranked up his pace
and dove under Milan for third . Milan responded to t he pass by fa lli ng o n h is face . Rya n
crossed the line with a country-mil e lead follow ed by Wam boldt, Ca rroll a nd Mila n, who
regr ouped for fourth.
Ryan ca me bac k lat er in the day to post a
convincing two-moto swee p of the 125cc Nov ice
class. Jerry Aleman go t the best of S.,I Uga rte in
the first moto for seco nd but Uga rte redeemed
h imself wit h a solid second-place finish in the
all- importan t final mo to which was good
enough for runner-u p hon ors for the day.
Jeff Willoh discovered som e hidden speed as
he led every la p of both 12Scc In termed ia te
mot os. Wh ile Will oh rod e uncontested in the
lead in each mota, Ty Kad y a nd E.J. Wr ight
mixed it up for the number two sp ot. Kady finished third behind Wright in the first mota and
was suprised by Tra vis Preston. who finis hed
