eEVENTS ~. Andy Perkin s sprin ted to the Form ula One win at the Gateway International RR. Sm ith in third. Achziger wa s fourth with Keith Mayes in fifth . At the comple tion of lap o ne Ryan drag- raced Pestana to the top of the h ill and stuffed his Yamaha to the inside to take the lead. It wasn' t long befor e Pestana wa s being press ured by Smith for the second spot. Sm ith waited for an other ha lf a lap befo re making a mo ve on Pestana for second. On the back side of the tra ck, in the w ide swee ping sa nd tum, Smith mad e h is m ov e. Pesta n a, unabl e to hold off Smith , relinquished the second spo t to fall back to thi rd . The race then became a Ryan-Smith bat tie for the lead . Ryan felt the pressure of Smith and did all he could to hold Smith back. Smith p ushed Ryan the en tire race but to no ava il. On the final lap Smi th tried a d aring p ass on th e downhill jump and cased it at the bo ttom. Ryan held .Smith's chall enges off to take the win and the ove rall. Results 50 BEG (0-8): 1. W UIS ,IL,SEPT.5 Andy Pe rkins took top honors in the Formula On e and Formula Tw o Expert classes during the WERA Na tional Q ua lifying Sprints at Ga tewa y International Raceway. Pe rkins, ridi ng a Gatli n Racing-sponsore d H ond a 125, go t th e holeshot in Form ula Tw o and b uilt a command ing lead by the halfway poin t Novice racers Mike Messer and Pete Hall, both riding Yamaha 250s, d iced for second an d closed the ga p to just a few seco nd s by the end of the race. Perkins held on to the lead an d ga thered the win. In Formu la On e Eric Whi te Jumped off the start on a Suzuki 750, bu t Perkins took the lead on the third lap and ran some of his fastest lap tim es with Wh ite an d Ma rk Old ha m, riding a Suzu ki 750, competing for s econd. A cras h on the fourth lap in tu m two br oug ht ou t the red flag. On the resta rt Perkin s got the holesh ot and had strong competition fro m John Mo rris and Matthew Macheca . In tu rn 12 on the fifth lap Morri s crashed into the guard rail and slid down the tra ck, literally ripping the leather off his back but not serious ly injuring him . The race was red flagged ag ain and called beca use it was past the halfway point Perkins was decla red the winn er followed by Macheca and White. In the B Superst ock class Rentzell jumped off the start on a Suzuki 750 and rod e smooth and fast to the win. Dean Hayes on a Honda 600 wa s h is only close competition bu t was unab le to catch up. Eric White started in a strong th ird but was passed by Darnell Dorsey on the third lap. However, Mark Junge moved up stead ily from the back of the pack and took third on a Suzuki 750. Ren tzell a g a in le d fro m the sta r t in A Superstock and took the checkered flag 12 seconds ahead of Hayes. Patrick Ludwig took third, but he had str ong comp eti tion from first year No vice racer Sha ne Dark on a Honda 600. Ha yes got the holeshot in C Superstock but was quickly passed by Reuben Frim ke n field, who held the lead followed by Ha yes. Rentzell , on a Suzuki 600, moved steadily through tra ffic from the fifth row of the grid an d had reached third wh en a crash in tum two ende d th e race on the sixth lap and locked in the top three positions. Butler scores season finale at Lawrenceburg Short Track By John Spurrier LAWRENCEBURG, IN,SEP 17 Mike Butler put the power to the gr ound and won the fina l Pro-Am feature of the year at the Lawrenceburg Speedway. At the sta rt o f th e Pro-Am feature, Gary Stogsd ill gra bbed the lead coming out of turn two an d led the first lap . Tha t's as far as he got as Joe Seyfferle fell in tu m two, bringing ou t the red flag. On the res tart Mike Butler led the pack onto the back stre tch and pr oceeded to lead all 20 lap s for the win. Stogsdill motored to a second pl ace fin ish wh ile Curt Snelling su rvived so me la te race pressure by Kell y Bo wlby to claim th e third spot. Bowlby took fourth fol- • lowed by Seyfferle, Ma tt McQuill ar, Dan Hom, and James Ca nte r. Sa m Lowe got th e holesh ot in the Open A featu re and went w ire to wire for his win. Bob Brown had the seco nd spot but slid wide in tum four, giving the spo t to Marv in Gard ne r on the second la p . Brown came ba ck to ta ke se con d away from Gardner on the ne xt lap . Ga rd ne r held third p lace until the eighth lap whe n his ma chi ne gave it up , a llowing Lut he r Allen to ta ke ov e r the third spot. At the finis h it wa s Low e, Brown, and All en , follo we d by Dickie Goodwin, and Tony Bolling. The 125cc fea tu re saw Phillip Wolf grab the ea rly lead until he go t in to turn thr ee too hot and was passed by Travis Burn ett and Kev in Hiler. On the next lap H iler d id the sa me thing in th e sa me tu rn, clipped Burnett and highsided, bringing out the red flag . Hiler was sore but we nt to the rear of the single file restart. On the restart Bu rne tt put his Yam aha int o the lead and held it until the finish despite some late lap pressure b y se co n d p lace fini she r Damon Stapl eton . Th e p air dominated the 300-m ile, two- lap race, taking the overall win in five hou rs and 17 minut es . The Buzzards M/C team of Steve Stev en s, Coy Pearson, Kevin Ross and Mat t Meierb achtol survived a cras h to w in the Umited Spor tsman class . Meierbachtol had a get-off on the way to the Borr ego check, tea rin g of the left footpeg. Ross took over the unrepaired machine and rode 'his shi ft over the Mini Summi t to keep the team on the winning track. Th e tea m of Ha rold Bliss and Pet e Blood wo n the Sportsman class ove rall. Recovering from a bad sta rt, George Zepeda moved through th e 12-rid er pack an d took over second pla ce , leav ing a real battle for thi rd between Schl egel, Doyl e, McKa y, Dave Ma rtin an d Ch ris Pitts . With his sights set on second place Zepeda, Schlegel moved right up on Zepeda's rear whee l bu t cou ld n ' t mak e the pass before the fin ish. Zepeda mad e his move on Lawless for second place on lap six but couldn ' t catch Schlegel. wh o took the win. Ha lfway through lap one, Flem ing di scovered that he forgot to tu m on his gas giving the lead to Schlegel. Schlegel went on and took the win in both Modifie d heats for the ove rall win. Amateur Stock riders were ou t to do ba ttle as Kev in Sheafer pu lled the ho lesho t followed by John Bottche r, Erick Aquil ar and Mark McCord. O n lap four Bottche r mad e his move on Sheafer and took ove r the first- pla ce spo t, go ing on for the win. In the second heat it wa s McCord and Bottcher first off the lin e followed by Sheafer. TIle two lead rid ers battled wheel to wheel unt il lap five when th ey both cra she d in tum two. McC ord was u p fir st, s till in fir st p la ce. but Shea fer was cha rging hard. Souza superior at Cycleland Motocross By Michael Rich CHICO, CA, SEPT. 18 Yama ha-mo un ted Joe Sou za led the ent ire distan ce to dom inate the 25Occ/Open main at the 10th round of th e Summer Mountain Bik e Give aw ay Se ri es at Chico' s Cycl e land Speedway. Mark "C ra sh " Coope r and Kenny Bellamy each took a win in the tw~ heat races qualifying rid ers for the 250 /0pen feat u re. Coop er and Bellamy used the ir first choices on the ga te to take the extreme ins ide positions. When the gate dropped, however, it wa s Joe Souza powering out of the center of the pack to ass ume the lead around the first tum and d own the back straight. Bellamy filed in beh ind Souza but was surprised at the end of the straig ht when he wa s outbrakcd by Wayn e Peters goin g into the following tum. As the riders finished the first lap , Cooper came from the back of the pack to pass Tom Polito and his four-stroke Can Am for fourth.
