Carruthers, who is in his eighth year as associate editor of the ne wspaper, begins his tenure wi th this issue. Ca rruthers will conti nue in his role as Senior Editor of Personal Watercraft Illustra ted a nd Motorcycle Road Racer Illustrated and will also edit the 1994 AMA Supercross Souvenir Yearbook. For the past eight years, Carruthers has covered nea rl y every facet of motorcycle racing fo r Cycle Neuis while concentrating his efforts on the AMA National Championship Road Race Series. In addi tion, Carruthers pr od uced the firs t issue of Perso nal Watercraft Illustrated in 1987 and has worked on every issue since. In 1988 , CN Pub lishin g began publish ing Mo torcycle Road Racer Illustrated with Carruthers as its editor, and together they have p roduced the last fou r Motorcycle Road Racer Illustrated Yearbooks. The 32-year-old began his jou rnalism career in 1985 as a sports writer for N orth Coast Publishing in Encinitas, California, after completing his ed ucation at San Diego State University in San Diego, California. He was hired by CycleNeuis in June of 1986. Carruthers, w ho was born in Syd ney, Australia, ha s an ex tensive background in motorcycle racing. As a yo ungster he traveled through Europe with his p aren ts and old er s is te r a s h is fa the r, Ke l, w orked toward s w inn in g a r oad r a ce Worl d Championship. After winning the 250cc World Championship, the senior Carru the rs mo ved hi s fa mil y to San Diego in 1971 and b eg an ra cing in th e AMA Na ti on al Championship series. Paul ha s been an active particip ant in motorcyclin g eve r since. Paul and his wife [oni have two children, Karly, 4, and Kyle, 21 months. "I'm excited with the prospect of leading Cycle Netos into its 30th year an d beyond," said Carruthers. "I've been preparing myself for this oppo rtu nity for a lon g time. I pla n to carry on the tradition and progress of this newspaper, and I'm thankfu l that Sharon Clayton and Mike Klinger have enough faith in me to give me this opportuni ty." Carruthers replaces Jack Mangus, who was relieved of his duties due to d ifferences in management procedures. Barros wins his first, Harada crowned in FIM G randP rix A fter four years of tryi ng, Brazilian Alex Barros (right) finally wo n a 500cc Grand Prix, his victo ry comi ng in the final round of the World Championship Road Race Series in jarama, Spain, September 26. The Lucky Strike Suzuki rider became the first Brazilian to ever wi n a 500cc GP, moving in to position to p ick up the pieces as three of the top four riders crashed out of the race . Fas t qualifier Joh n Kocinski a nd Shinichi Itoh were th e first to go as Itoh crash ed his Rothmans Honda right in fron t of Kocinski as the pa ir battled for the lead. Kocinski, on the factory Cagiva , ended up run ni ng over th e rider fro m Japan , and w ent d own. Tho ugh both esca ped wit ho ut injury, neither were able to finis h the race. Ten laps from the finish, anot her of the leaders was eliminated when Italian Luca Cadalora crashed his Marlboro Yama ha. That left Barros so me five seconds clear of Rothmans Honda's Daryl Beattie a t the finish line . Third place we nt to recently-crowned Worl d Champion Kevin Schwan tz on the Lucky Strike Suzuki, with Marlboro Ho nd a's Alex Criville and Cagiva 's Doug Cha nd ler ro unding ou tthe top five finis hers. . The final point standings in. the 500cc World Championship are as fo llo ws : Schwantz (248), Wayne Rainey (214), Daryl Beattie (176), Michael Doohan (156) and Cadalora (145). With the 500cc World Championship already decided, attention in [ararna shifted to the battle for the 250cc World Championship. In the firs t ra ce of the day, Japan's Tetsuya Harada won the 250cc Grand Prix, becoming the first Japanese rider to wi n a World Championship since Takazumi Katayama won the 350cc crown in 1977. The Telkor-Yamaha rider started the race 10 points behind championship leader Loris Capirossi on the Marlboro Hond a, bu t Cap irossi ran off the track on the 22nd lap and slipped to fou rth before finishing an eventual fifth. Harada went on to win the race, taking the championship by only four points over Capirossi, 197-193, af ter 14 rounds. Finishing 1.2 seconds behind Harada was Italian Loris Reggiani on the Chesterfield Aprilia. Italian Max Biaggi finished th ird on the Rothmans Honda with Ducados Honda's Alberto Puig and Capirossi round ing out the to p five finish ers . The 125cc World Champ ionship went to German Dirk Raud ies , who rode conservatively to finish eigh th . The race wi n wen t to fellow German Ralf Waldmann on the Marlboro Ap rilia over the Ho ndas of Takeshi Tsujimura and Kaz uto Saka ta. In the fina l s ta n di ngs, Raudies topped Sa ka ta, 280-266, w ith Tsu jim ura th ird with 177 point s. packages of all level s for the 1994 race season.
