Open A heat winner Billy Hoffmiester sa t on the pole at the start of the final. Lined up next to h im w ere Lan gland , Eric Brouhard, Rand y Triplett and Mike Tehro. When rac e promoter Phil lillie threw th e green flag, it w as Hoffmiester with the qu ickest react ions. With two laps d own Hoffmiester wa s under attack from Langland as the pair moved a few lengths ahead of Brouhard, Triplett and Tehro. On the next lap, Triplett moved by Brouhard and set after the leaders. Langland loo ked to the outside of Hoffmiester on every lap but mixed it up as he dov e to the inside in turn three to take control of the lead . The race reached fever pitch when Triplett finally engaged the front-runners on lap five . The trio had the crowd cheering with anticipation as they ran the comers three abrea st for the remainder of the race. A very ela ted Langland eventually came out on top of the battle by a narrow margin ov er Hoffmiester and Triplett. Brouhard and Tehro finished fourth and fifth , respectively. After chasing Kevin Van Alstine in the Open B main, Bill Berard's opportunity cam e on lap five as the duo encountered lapped traffic in tum three . Knick nabs Bear Creek ST By Kevin George S.CANTON, OH ssrr, II , Peter Knick not only led every lap of the Light Flat Track div is ion feature, but he put his Kawasaki out front in the Heavy division feature as well, scoring wins in both at Bear Creek Speedway. This was Knick's first race on the Bear Creek oval , and he could muster no better than third and fourth place fini shes in the Lightweight heat. But he came back to holeshot the feature. Lenny Umpleby was all over Knick for a solid eight laps but couldn't shake up the newcomer, and Knick posted the win . After moving from third place to overtake Norm Into on the last lap of the first Heavy heat. Knick stayed up front for the next heat and main event in that division also . Hard-charging Jerry Berardinelli pressed Knick even harder than Umpleby had, but Knick rode his race as if he was alone on the track and took his second class win . Umpl eby managed to finish third, putting both riders up in the money. Brian Bellinger also took advantage of runn ing two classes as he topped the Light and Heavy Knobby classes on hi s 125 Suzuki. Bellinger dominated aclion in the Light class . A holeshot put Bellinger up front in the Heavy feature with Into app lying the pressure. Into 's big bore Honda clearly had more power, but each time he was in position to make the pass they were back in the turns where Bellinger took advantage of his lighter, less powerful Suzuki. John Delbalso ran the race all alone in third. Kim Brown won out in a heated battle with Jim Piecuch and John Oark to take fourth. Charlie Italia remained the d om inating force in Youth action with a half-lap margin of victory. Italia's tou gh est compe tition in hea t actio n, Damien Anderson, stalled a t th e d rop of the g a te . Stephan Ha yes h ad to work his w ay a roun d Jason Berardin elli to take up the chase . In speedway action it was Scotty Brown all the wa y in the Scra tch main . Brow n was top qua lifier by winn ing both of his heats. Kevi n Smith and Jeff Tretera also had hea t wins. Pat Reynol ds work ed around Smith and Tretera to take a second place finish. In the Handicap main it was John Vasil out front early with Mau rer taking over on the third la p . Maurer fir st he ld o ff a cha llenge from Smith, then it was Tre tera do gging him the final four laps. Brown came from a back straight start to take a th ird place fini sh . Hess bestat Dillwyn 100 HS By Mary Jackson DILLWYN,VA,SErf.5 Havoline /Oury / N eel y /Tusbaki /Bare Brosbacked Brian Hess was the overall winner at the Dillwyn, Virgina, Hare Scrambles despite being slowed by a flat tire . Hess was first off the line at the start and built a good lead for the first two laps. Mark Allman followed in se cond and Andrew Williams held third . Hess' rear tire went down on the moteross section at the sta rt of the third lap , and he lost hope of being able to finish the race as he slowed down until only eight seconds separated him and the top rider in the 2SOa: A Class. But by the start of the fourth lap Hes s had decided to try to keep his pace and bring home the victory. He finished the race, running three laps with a flat tire. and bagged the overall win with 45 seconds to spare. The 250cc A class was very interes ting as Rick Romans on a 2SOa: Suzuki was the one to watch. By the third lap he had come within eight seconds of Hess. Taking the second place position was brother Mike Romans, and third was George Greer. Danny Morrison battled R.J. Faddis in the Vet A class . Every lap the two riders sw itched pla ces. Reynertson rules Palmdale GP By Greg Robertson PALMDALE, CA, SErf.6 Ric Reynertson ran away and hid from a larg e field of 125cc Beginners to claim the overall honors at California Racing Club's Desert Sun Grand Prix at Los Angeles County Raceway. The Labor Day event was the third and fin al round of the 16th annual Tri-Race Series. Reynertson got things off by leading the pack through the first tum after the dead engine start. Brian McCormick was running a close second and actually got around Reynertson to take the lead with one lap down. Bryan Lamborn had moved up a couple of positions into third ahead of Doug Ellis and Jamie Myers. By the third of what would eventually be a 12-lap race on the extended GP course, McCormick had Reynertson breathing down his neck, badly wanting to take the number one position. Reynertson used the w ider, faster Steve Schrobsdorf (4V) and Monte Pritchett (52V) dueled at the Palmdale GP. desert section of the track to overtake Mc Cormick. Both riders were now working through the 250cc and 500cc riders who had started before them. McCormick got s tuck behind a 250cc rider for almost two laps which allowed Reynerston to build a 1Q-second lead. For the most part the rac e was ov er. Reynertson continued to pull away, eventually crossing the finish line with a 30-second lead and passing all the 250cc and SOOc machines in the process. McCormick Tan w ell ahead of the b attle between Ellis and Lamborn for third. Bob Hausman was on the gas fo r the entire 45· minute race. Working up from a ten th place start, Hau sman caught a n d passed both Ellis and Lamborn with only two laps remaining. McCormick had ba ck ed off the pace on the white flag lap only to turn around and see a charging Hausman on his back fender.
