Pelton pullsoffGlen Helen ST By Jere Mayer Photo by Suzzanne Voll SAN BERNARDINO, CA,SEPT. 11 Da vid Pelton found the fast line on the track to score the win' in the Op en class, and David Rust passed brother Jim Rust to score the win in the 250cc Expert final at Glen Helen OHV Park . The track was prepped to per fection as the rider s lined up for the Open main. When the green flag d ropped, three riders dove into tum one. Jim Rust cha rged ahead with Japanese visitor Masayuki Yama mo to passing und er Pelton for SL'COnd . Pelton looked up , hooked up, locked up, and screamed past Yam amoto on lap four . Rust was having engine trou ble, and on the very sa me lap Rust rod e high as Pelton blasted by for the lead . As Yama moto closed in on Rust for second, the checke re d flag drop pe d , and it was Pelton, Rust and Yamamoto finishi ng 1-2-3. Jim Rust jum ped ou t to a n early lead in the 250cc Expert main and held it for se veral lap s over brother David. But then, fInding the swee t spo t on th e track, David Rust hooked up a nd roosted past Jim : With sp ~ r ks flying from h is steel shoe, David Rust never looked back" leaving Jim Rust and Tom Oark to battl e for second . Clark had the power in the straigh ts wh ile Jim was quicke st out of the h, ns. Triplett tops Marshfield HM By Bill Holt 30 MARSHAELD, WI,SEPT. 5 Rand y Triplett s ty led h is A l Mu th H-D / -Donah ue H-D/Gene ral Eng./ Davey Du relIe / Bell Helm et s-spon sor ed machines to back-toback w ins in the 500cc a nd Open Pro classes at the Central Wisconsin State Fair. The first class to tackle the slick, clay groo ve were the 500cc Pros. Tripl ett had finished high eno ugh in h is heat to make the front row . By the time tl)e light fla shed for the fin al h e had wo rked ou t his prob lems and by the th ird lap had ta ken contro l of the race. Trip lett cruise d home for the win in fron t of Kurt Boehlke, Cliff Ekes, Dave Cartw rig ht and Kurt Krom roy for his firs t win of the afternoon. The re was no lack of atten tion w he n the Open Pro class lined up. Triplett wasted no time in taking comma nd. He took the out side line all the way throu gh the first two tums on his way to the fron t and was never headed. The racing was tigh t and exciting behind the leader. When the checkers flew Trip lett had grabbed the win in fro n t o f Boehlke, Ge orge lstavanek, Bob Ybema and Steve Kastens Cla re nce Rupnow worked hi s Misc h ler 's Wood -Rotax to the front of the Senio r final to top Chris Laursen, Bob Kluende r, Joe Poklasny and Steve Prisk for the win. Dan Mur re con tin ued his winning way s in the 400 cc Amat eur class by rolli ng to the w in pa st Lee Johnson, Roger Banes, Troy Johnso n and Frank And er son for the victory. Eleven 50cc riders lined up for the final, and all eyes were tuned in as they peddled off of the line. Blake Young moved to the front of the pack af ter a s low star t and held off Trav is Kear ns, Matt McGr a th, Co rey Strom and Jord a n Jones for the win. It was one of the bes t races of the season in the 250cc Amate ur final. J.R. Schnabel snapped to .the front of the pack at the flash of the green towing Brian Zu rn and Ekes. Schnabel foug h t the track and Zu rn as they swa pp ed the lead . nearl y eve ry tu rn . Schnabel never d id fin d a way to put the power to the ground, and Zurn, who rode his best race of the season, used the slick track and a grea t ride to top Schnabel , Ekes, Mike Yingling and Dave Goehring for the welld eserved win. The Open Cl ass was the first ri de for JR Schnabel on the Stev e Champine 883 Ha rley Davidson , and he looked like an old hand as he rip ped the ho leshot and held off Art Mischler's Triump h , M ik e Du v a ll 's 883 an d Rand y Phillippe's 750 Yamaha for his second win of the day. Tyler Smuld ers ran an outs ide line from the star ting line all the way th rou gh tum two to take the lead in th e 80cc Junior div isi on a nd pull away from the pack for the win. Engstrom hauls at Hurricane Hills Motocross By Geo rge Hodkinson MAZEPPA, MN,SEPT. 6 Robbie Engs trom wa s the so le rid er to enjoy two class wins at the Hu rricane Hills MX facility, winni ng the 17·24 A class aboa rd his CRSOO and the 250cc A class on a borrowed KX250. In the first mot o of the 250c A class Team c Green ride r Corey Keeney p u t his KX in to the lead off the start followed by Jim Povolny, Chad Winecke and Engstrom. By the com pletio n o f the second lap Engstro m had moved into second a nd se t h is sights on Keen ey. Lap after la p the two s tayed eq ual dista nce apa rt as they awed spectators by leap ing the 9O-foot uphill do ubles that few rid ers a ttemp ted . At the finish Keeney scored the win with Engs trom sett ling for second . Winecke and Povolny cam e in third and fourth, respective ly. At t he s ta r t of mot o two Engst ro m an d Keeney were side by side go ing into the first corner, but E ngstrom sh u t the doo r on Keeney 's atte mp t to grab the holeshot and wound up getting the d rive for the lead. Engs trom set a blisteri ng pa ce in the early par t of the race which Keeney couldn 't mat ch. As the race unfold ed , Engs tro m was ab le to keep the same d istance betw een himself and Keeney up to the finish. "Everyt h ing fina ll y fe lt goo d ," said Engstrom. "Today was the bes t ride I've had all year." " Mike Kann used h is home-track ad vantage to score the overall win in the Mini Senior class a t h is paren ts ' tra ck . In th e fir st mot o Luke Wiitala put his Honda ou t fron t but overs hot the first corner, allowing Karin , Brian Rousselow an d Mike Ettesvold by. By lap one Ettesvold was cha rg ing after Kann. Ettesvo ld displ aced Kann on the second lap for good, and the two ri d ers fin s hed in th at o rde r while La nc e Cu nningha m moved up in to third and Samuel Miner finished the moto in fourth. Kann was first to the come r in moto two followed by Miller and Wiita la. The long wh oop section at Hu rricane Hills has a way of so rting ou t riders, and this mot o 'was no exception as after the first lap Ettesvold moved into seco nd w it h Mille r th ir d a n d Cun n in g h am fo ur th . K. nn and EttesvoJd pu t on an impr essive show , ou t front as they flew side by sid,e over num erous jumps. Ettes vold was able to stick a wheel on the inside of Kann throug h some of the corners, bu t Kann was able to bear the pr essure to the finish, windi ng up w ith the mo to and overall win . "T oda y mar ks my officia l comeback to motocross," Bronikowski said. .,And I plan to race the Vet Nationa ls out west." It wa s evide nt from his rid ing that he is up to spe ed al read y de spite not havi ng raced for over a year as he was fou r for four in holeshots and three for fou r in mo to wins, placin g second in his last mot o of the da y beh ind Bryan Hunt. In th e fi rst mo to of t he O pen A class Bronikowski pu lled out in front at the start and stayed there the rest of the moto as David Niemi gave chase ea rly on. By the midpoint of the race Bronikowski was ou t of sight, and the two riders finished in that ord er. The second moto prove d to be more en te rt ai ni n g as N iemi kept on Bronikows ki' s heels and took advanta ge of a Bron ikowski cras h to inherit the lead . When Bronikowski crashed a second time it appeared that Niem i was go ing to take the win, but Niemi fell victim to the sa nd as well, and he crashed hard. N iem i had to pull ou t of the race, giving Bronikowski the moto and overall wins. The 2S+ C class was the biggest of the da y with 32 rid ers on the ga te. In the first moto Jeff Farne ll bla sted in to the lead follow ed by Kyle Longtin and Rober t Hanson. Longtin crashed in the seco nd cor ner, cau sing a pile-up as many riders had to slow down and the pack began to spa ce out. By the end of the first lap , Mike Fox pu t his Suzuki in to the lead followed by Rory Vesel, and the two were to stay that way until the finish with Fa rnell slipp ing back to fourth at the checker ed flag. In the second moto John Lovelace grabbed the holesh ot as Longtin was in second , and Craig Stickfort in th ird. Within one lap the frontrunners cha nged pos ition as Vesel worked in to the top spot. The d uo of Fox and Vesel remained close right to the finish with Vesel holding onto the lead until the last lap when Fox slipped by for the win.
