International Road Race

Probst Brothers Rac in g; which ha s stru ggled
wit h a new GSXR1100 all season, got it together
a t Gatew ay International Racewa y and won the
fifth round in the 1-44 Challenge between the
M id w est Cafe Racin g Ass o ci ati on an d th e
Hallett (Oklahom a) Road Race Gub.
The race was tigh t from the start with Cycle
Tech , wh ich wa s later d isqualified because it
had n o sco re r, ge tt in g th e h o leshot. Sam
McDonald, rid ing for Team Excel on a K&Nsp onsored Yamaha 1000, took the lead on the
second lap. By lap three Probst Brothers' David
Probst had moved into second.
At the end of the first hour Team Excel had a
50-seco nd lea d . Tea m K&N Raci ng's Ph il
McDo nald had moved into second place from
the second sta rt wave on a Yamaha 600 wit h
Probst Brothers d ose behind. Pitting for fuel and
rider changes mixed the orde r, and sho rtly after
the hour mark Probst Brothers Racing regained
secon d. C&C Racin g and Bea vis & Butthead
were on their tails th roughout the race, ba ttlin g
for thir d in Heavyweig ht. At one ho ur and 20
m inu tes Team Excel pitted again, giving the lead
to K&N, with Probs t Brothers Racing challenging hard .
There were two red flags in the race. A crash
in turn tw o stop ped the race an hou r and 35
minutes into the 2~hour event.
At the restart Probst Brothers Racing jumped
into the lead on the Widman H-D/Suzuki-sponsored GSXR, follow ed by Team Excel's Michael
Dye. Fiv e min utes la te r the seco nd red flag
ended the day's racing 20 min utes short of two
hou rs wh en Chet Meyers of C&C Racing. who
had moved in to third overall, crashed in tum
six. Probst Brothers took the checkered flag followed by Team Excel and K&N Racing.
The first even t of the day, a WERA 50-miler,
was marred twice at the start by red flags. Andy
Perkins, on a Ho nda 250 sponso red by GaiJin
Racing, got the ho leshot on the first start bu t the
race was stopped because of cras hes on the first
lap in turns one and 10. Perkins' competition for
the race, Kevin Rentzell on a Suzu ki 1100, go t
the holes ho t on the second start, but Perkins had
taken the lead on lap two w hen the race was
s topped aga in af te r fo ur b ikes went down in
tum six. On the th ird sta rt Perkins once aga in
jumpe d int o the lead. RentzelI, who was dose
beh ind, inju red his knee below the pu ck on a
cu rb on the th ird lap and d roppe d out of the
race, leaving Perki ns wi th a command ing lead .

Firebird International Raceway hos ted the nextto-l ast ro u n d of th e AMA / CCS South west
Region Series and was the scene for two major
p oint bat tles , It was also the fina l eve nt in the
region that posted Honda CBR conti ngencies.
. Stu Morrison 's po int lea d had wrap ped up
the number-one pla te for the th ird yea r in a row,
bu t Mor rison was one of those hop ing to bag
H onda 's $500 fir st-place purse in the
Mid dl eweight Supersport class. Morriso n batti ed h is form e r e n d u rance teamma te, Dal e
Kieffer w ho he had b ested ea rl ie r in the
Middlewe ig h t Superbike race, a n d the pa ir
swa p p ed p os it ions for se veral laps . Kieffer,
h o w e v e r, wa lked off w ith th e $5 00 aft er
Morrison DNF'd du e to a faulty kill sw itch.
The other top p urse went to Honda CBR900mou nted Larry Locklear in th e Un li m ited
Su persp or t sprin t race. Locklear returned later
in the day in the IS-lap Unl imited GP d ivision,
w here he finished third beh ind Mark Foster and
Morriso n.
Goi ng all-ou t in his a ttem p ts to sec ure the
n umber-three p late for his second consec utive
year, Fos te r en tered sev en rac es on h is two
Yamahas. The TZ250 carried him to victory in
four races , whil e on his FZR600 he placed no
lower than fourth. The rights to the nu mber-o ne
plate will be d ecided in the final even t of the
year betw een Foster and cha llenge r Mar k No len.
The a mateur competitors ha ve swelled the
ranks of the regiona l ros ter, with Greg Perry battling Marcus Hu bbard for the honor of being the
h ig h - p o int a mateu r. Perry c ras he d in
Middleweigh t Supers po rt class, an d n ow the
gap be tween him and cha llen ger Hubba rd is
down to 11 points. The two men entered seven
races and p lan to d o the sa me a t the re gional
wrap-up in th ree weeks .
Jerry Evans, a fo rm er moto cros s ra ce r,
grabbed the Middl eweight Superbike Ama teur
class victory from Hubbard in the final lap of the
race. Evans and Hubba rd swapped passes seve r·
al times, bu t Hu bb ar d fell victim to the d usty
surface in tu m 10 on the white flag lap , and slid
off the tr ack . Eva ns fin ish ed four th ov erall,
whi le Hubbard manag ed to remount and finish
third in the amateur class.
