A complete res tart was requ ired on the first lap when the red flag came out for a get off by Dave 'GiIl between turns three and four. Gill took a rid e to the hosp ital wi th a possible broken leg. On the restart Morgan took the lead wi th Steve Gill in second, and they expanded thei r leads to finis h well ahea d of Expert rid ers John Faulkner an d Kyle Long . Dean Fau lk ne r was the early Open class lead er until the red flag came out when Kyle Long fell afte r running int o the rea r wh eel of Steve Gill's m otorcycl e . On the s ing le ro w restart Gill w as qu ickes t off the line and held on to take the w in ov er Faulkner . Long moved from the back of the field to finish third. Recil Hart led the SOOcc class final with Bob Collier in tow only to ha ve Dean Faulkner pass both rid ers on lap one coming out of tum four. Paul Morg an made the high line pa ss on Collie r and Hart between th ree and fou r on lap two to tak e ove r seco nd . Five rounds of Scratch racing wi th points bein g ea rn ed by fini shing or der. At th e en d o f five rounds Ven ega s was the poin t lead er followed by Mike Faria. There wa s a four -wa y tie for third between Chris Man chester, John Aden, Bobby Scwa rtz and Don Odom, wh ich mad e a run-off necessary. Manchester g ot the holesh ot an d took the win while Ad en on his new jawa far outpowered Od om for second. Schwartz pro bably would hav e been a factor had his engine not let go big time with not even a lap in the books. The main was set and it was an exciting one. '}J Alan Chr istian. rid ing Rose Racing's bra nd new [awe, sco red yet another vict ory in the Scra tch main eve nt in front of the roar ing Fast Friday 's fans whil e Jeff Norton posted his first Handicap ma in eve nt win since join ing First Division. In the Scratch main Christian lined up on the pole wit h Bobby Hedden in the second gate, Bob Hicks in the number three and Bart Bast on the ou tside . Christian wa s first in to the com e r followed by Hedden and Bast Hicks took the outside line an d passed Hed den on the back straigh t to put him in seco nd pla ce. Hicks rem ained on the outside a nd tried to pass Christian but was unable to find traction . Th e other riders stayed on the pole, an d Hicks wasn't able to get back in line an d eventually fell to last place. On the thi rd lap Bast was able to get by Hedden for seco nd . At the checkered flag it was Christian first. Bast second, and Hed den thind. Robert Curry and Hed den shared space on th e 40, and Bast sa t alone on the SO. When the tapes went up Nort on led in to th e firs t co rne r Iol lowed by Krause and Whi teside. Wh iteside bobbled at the en d of the firs t lap , allowing the othe rs to pas s . No rto n m a intained s uc h a com manding lead that the real race was between Curry an d Bast for third pl ace. Every now and th en Hedden would tu ck hi s nose up und er them but was unable to pass . It wa sn't un til the wh ite flag lap the Bast wa s fina lly abl e to ge t by Curry. It looked as if Bast might catch Norton, bu t Norton was riding at his best and withstood the p ressu re to rem a in in the lead . At the start of the first se ven- lap mota Neil Alonzo grabbed the earl y lead wi th Turner and Kerry Va ntiene n in tow. Before theend of the firs t lap Tu rner used one of the la rge Starwest jumps to hi s a dva ntage an d ju m ped past Alon zo to grab the lead . With Turner out fron t, Vantienen wa s doing his bes t to mak e his way to the lead. He firs t ju mped past Alonzo over the la rge jump and then se t hi s sig ht s on the leade r. On the next tap Vantic nen tried to ma ke a move on the lead er, bu t he co uld not make it stick. By the ha lfway p oint Van tien en mad e th e pass for the lead and started to pu ll out a good lead on the field . The riders fell into a groove for the remai nder of the race excep t for a failed lastd itc h e ffo r t b y Alon zo to m ove int o second. When the fla g flew it wa s Va ntienen with the win follow ed by Turner and Alonzo. In the seco nd mo to the action heat ed up as Vantienen and Tu rne r swap ped the lead back and forth throu gh out the mo to. Vantienen too k the early lead and started to put some d istance on the pack; Turner a nd Alonzo followed. By the third lap Turner p ulled so me speed out of his back pocket a nd s tarted to reel in the lead er . Turner made an ins ide move to sna tch the lead , but Van tienen countered and retook it. The tw o rid ers were at each other like dogs in heat, and neith er rider was willi ng to give an inch. When th e d og fight wa s over, Tu rner wa s th e victor grabbing both the mota win and the ove rall In the 125 cc Novi ce cla ss it was a nothe r Turne r with the victory: Dennis Tumer . Dennis rode tw o hard- fough t motos to finish 2-1 and score the overall. The first moto was a ba ttle as Josh Warner and Turner went at it lap after lap until Warner cam e out on top with the win. The race seemed like a jumping contest as each rider wo uld outju mp the other to take the lead. In the second moto Turne r was ted li tt le tim e as he pulled the ho leshot a nd le d th e en tire mota.
