Tearoffs were flying in the first moto for the 250cc Beginners when the track was still a slurry surface. Rogers sta rted out in fron t and stayed there despite being pushed hard by a very dirty Theron Carlson, complemen ts of Roger' s roost ers . Carlson d id the sa me to Jim Du bose, who came in third. For the second mot a, the tr ack was n icely packed in, and although Larry Williams took the hole s hot, Roge rs wa s seco n d w ith Dubo se pressin g him for four laps . They both managed to dis pose of Will iams, then Dubose took the lead for good. Carlson got off to a slow start but worked his way up to a third p lace finish. The 125cc Int ermediate class wa s a thr eeway battle in b ot h mot o s. Tom m y Ma estas wasn't intimid ated by the m ud or unusual track cond itions, and he rod e with reckl ess aba ndon regardl ess of what lay ahead. Brian Highsmith owned the lead for a lap in the first moto, bu t Maestas took 'an ins id e lin e to ta ke the lead . Once in fro nt Maes tas was un beatable. Highsmith was challen ged to the very finish by Mike Calhoun bu t held his position for second p lace. The second moto bega n with the sa me three rid ing in reverse order of the first mota finish. Calhoun had the track to himself in the lead for almos t three laps whi le Maestas was bat tling to get by Hig hs m it h. Ma estas d is posed o f Highsmith, fou nd good tracti on on the face of dou ble jump and sailed by Calhou n to solid ify his gri p on the winning trop hy by taking first p lace in both motos. Mayer, Jr. actua Uy sli p ped his Rotax 600 into the lead on the fourth lap for a moment , bu t then slipped bac k to third as Beyer passed h im a nd Springst een a t the sa me time on the next lap . Beyer was tw isting the throttle cable to th e en d and almost clipped the ha y bales in ev ery comer. He we n t o n to w in by 10 bik e lengths over Springsteen. Danny Koe lsch followed Beyer throu gh the pack to finish third. Mayer, Jr. rode to fourth and semi-winn er Pat Buchanan held on to finish fifth. The Pro-Am 250-500cc Combination class w as an o ther Beye r be nefit. Beye r b le w them away on his borrowed Hond a 500. Beyer took the lead on the third lap an d wo n by near ly a full straig h taw ay . Followi ng Beye r for second was Dou g O'Boyle. Mike Bertra m was third, and Steve Kasten rod e ha rd to fo urt h w it h Eric O ' Boyle fifth. Amo ng the spectators a t the event was Tea m Suz uk i's Guy Cooper, who d rove st raight to the racetrack from the airport in orde r to catch some race actio D.. Race prom oter Goat Breker circulated a card th rough the p its and p resented it to Cooper later in the evening, along with a special p laque that thanked Cooper for all he's do ne for the sport of motocross. Layton Loop led the start of the first 25-29 Beginner moto, followed by Joh n Armstro ng, Tom Gerge n and Ernie Ga rcia. Aeck completed lap one in seventh, but was ripp ing and clawing his way th rough the pack. Loop 's lead was sho rt-lived, as he began a steady decent into the m iddl e of the pack and would finish an eventual seventh . Gergen took ove r the lead and began to p ut d istance between himself and Armstrong , who was now engaged in a battle for second with a hard-clta rging Acek. Aeck chewed up Armst ron g an d sp it h im back to th ird , then set ou t after Ge rge n. Aec k bega n to reel in Gergen, who repea ted ly looked back ove r his shoulder. On ly feet before the finish line, Aeck made his move by stu ffing Gergen and stealing the mot o w in. Ge rgen sh eok his head as he un willi ngly g ree ted the checkered flag in second, ahead of Arms trong, Garcia and Chri s Gallo. The second mo to saw Aeck on a ra mpa ge, cha rging from outside the top five and into first within th ree laps. Ga llo fin is he d second, followed by Garcia, Gergen a nd Armstrong. Greg Schnell made h is Pro class deb ut a memor able one by to ppi ng bot h motos in the combined Pro class. Donald Up ton was by far the fastest rider on the track, bu t a fla t tire in the first moto and crankcase trou bles in round two kept him ou t of the hunt Schnell rod e like a seasoned Pro and built up consid erable leads in both races. Scott Beard b ro ught his Suzuki hom e in the runne ru up spo t in both mo tos to take seco nd overall for the d ay. Williams hardest task of the d ay came when he lined up for the Un limited BiiC dass. When the ga te d ropped for the first mot o it was Paige Hilliard wh o took the ho lesho t ove r Green and rWilliams . Hilliard held the lead for the first circuit until he gave into the pressur e o f Green's pa ss a ttempts as Green slid into the top spot. Williams then started to wo rk on HiJliard for the next two laps before getting in to the second pastion, but Green was weB on his way to the first mo to wi n.
