Altho ugh ther e weren't as many compe titors as two weeks ago at the Mega Series, the competition was fierce betw een St r un k, Rodney Ca rrie r and Robby Cook . Ca rrier took the holesh ot in bot h moto s of the 125cc A class. In the first moto Stru nk gained the adv antage by the second lap and held it unti l th e fo ur th, Th en sud denly as he clear ed the small whoops, Strunk took a spill which frightened fans and caused him to lose two positions, putting h im in third place. By lap six he manu vered back in to second by passing Robby Cook in th e sweepe r befor e the s ta r ting lin e. Fans went wild as Strunk caught Ca rrier and finally ~ AUG. 21, ' By Kevin Geo rge S. Open Speedway Champions hip hosted by the Bear Creek Speedway. The c v c a t pits 16 qua lifie rs in a " Rou nd Robin" 20 hea t forma t to ea rn a start in the 4 race main eve n t. The top fou r rid ers ea rn the right to race in the mains. Brown attribu ted his perfo rmance to "a lot of lap s." "I spent some time racing speed way 4 and 5 nigh ts a week in California. The local rid ers here usually ride one o r tw o ra ces a w eek ," sa id Brown. "We hav e gotten to the point that there are 4 or 5 local riders that can ou trun m e on any given night , but they put too much pr essure on themselves at the big events." Brian Daily was one of those riders read y to top Brown. Daily led the first two laps of their first head to head mee ting when exiting tum tw o th e primary chain o n Daily ' s Go dde n sna pped , and Daily went h ead first to the clay. Th e ma chin e was a write-o ff, a ltho ug h Dail y was ready for more. A new Jaw a loan er from Phil Kalusha was n' t eno ugh to get Daily into the program as he d ropped poin ts after an excellent star t. Ma rk Mau rer a nd Kev in Smith wer e also knocking on the mai n eve n t door. Both rid ers have less than two years experie nce but ran well enough to tie for sixth overall. Poland 's Bogden Muszynski. who finished on the pod ium for the state eve nt, misse the U.S. Open show by two d poin ts and hod to settle lor fifth. The mai n ca me down to Bro w n, Pa t Rey nolds, Je ff Tr etera a nd John Lew is. As Brown domina ted the race, Reynolds and Lewis do mina ted the action. In the turns the two riders rub bed han d lebars, elbows, wheels and nerves as they wen t side by side for four solid laps with Lewis taking seco nd place. Results Alon zo and Pa ul O ld know round ing ou t the top five posit ions. Du ri ng Iap tw o Smith we n t for up th ro ugh the ra nks wa s Joh n Bracamonte, wh o ch arged s tro ng ly af ter a poor sta rt. Bracamonte's first victim was Paul Steele, and th en on e by one he w orked his wa y u p to Oldkn ow and Alonzo, passing both riders . He s taye d on the gas, puUin g away from Alonzo, but it was now late in the moto and the lead pa ir had gotten too far away to catch. Nu nnally took the checkered bringing the moto to a close wh ile Vargas, Bracam ont e, Alon zo and Jon Brower rounded out the top five slots. Mot o tw o saw a ca rbo n co py of th e first mot o s ta r t, N u n na lly holes ho t fo llowed by Smith, who agai n went for th e pass over the d oubl e ju mp only to come up sho t aga in. Th is time Vargas alm ost land ed on him , hit ting his bike instead , and ran off the track. He recovered qui ckly but not befor e Bracamonte scooted by for second . Up fro n t, N u nna lly aga in never looked back, nor did he' have reason, an d went wi re- to-wi re for the wi n. Bracamonte held off Vargas for second, wh ich also gave him second overa ll. Brower came across the checkered next, successfully d ropping Neil Alonzo back to fifth overall. Tim Beatty grabbed the holesho t in the 12Sec No vice first mo to wi th Dan Finc h and Gle nn Branso n d icing for third . Branson was all over Finch and it pa id o ff on the second lap as the pair went side by side on the back section of the t rac k and Branson held it on longer pa ssing Finch in the comer. Beh ind Finch there was a ba tt le go ing on for lourth bet ween Edd ie Nichol s, And y Yates and Aaron Prem an. Both Yates and Preman pu shed past Nichols and then Preman went for the pass jus t before the do uble d ouble and both rid er s went d own in a p ile when contact was made at the apex of the tum . Fritz Bottger mov ed up fro m a mid -pa ck start to take up the slack from Yates and Prcman and soo n was at the rear fende r of Nichols . A lap later Nichols lost anoth er slot while up front Bea tty took the wi n a safe d is tance ahead of Branson. Branson was out for blood as he came off the gate stro ng in moto two and went th rou gh tum two side by side with Beatty. Branso n was all over the Beatty and managed to stick a whee l in on the YZ rider on more than one occasion only to have the door slammed in his face. Lap after la p th e tw o w e nt at it a nd o n th e la s t la p Bra ns on pull ed a long si d e 0 1 Beatt y in th e whoop s and actu all y p ulled ou t in fro n t, b u t Beatty rail ed the outs ide line and man aged to hold off the Branson once agai n.
