Maurer mauls BearCreek Speedway By Kevin George S.CANTON,OH jUtY 24 , Mar k Mau rer scraped off the last of h is win tertime rus t a nd put together a beautiful, under p re ssure, Handi cap win a nd came away with a runner-up to Scotty Brown in the Scratch main. Despite a solid seco nd place in the Scratch ma in, Maurer star ted the Ha ndicap from the 40 yard line . Canada's Pa ul Gradwell came off the 60 ya rd line and by lap thr ee it was Maur er and Gradwell up fro nt. Brown s ta rte d from turn three and was up to third a t the halfw ay mark wh en he was sid elined wit h a flat tire. Champion Speedway By Larry McBride OWEGO,NY, AUG.I Five is now Lenny McBride's mag ic number as McBride scored his fourth Scratch main even t in a row at Champion Speed way. McBride gained about a two bike-length lead over Lewis that he held to the checkered flag. In the Handicap main event McBrid e an d Lewis came off the SO yard line an d a fter on ly one circu it we re closing in on the front yard liners w hile Rick Secoolis h main tain ed the lead . Hiram Sch.al . l Pfetzing perfect at Auburn Speedway ByGen Moore AUBURN,CA,AUG.7 Robert Pfetzing ga ve speed way fans a d em onstra tion of his excellen t rid ing abilit ies by pos ting a pe rfect sco re at Aub urn Spee d way in the first of three U.S. National qua lifier rounds. The track was p repa red to p erfection for the first qu alifier of the 1993 season. Twen ty-four riders ba ttled for po ints to earn the righ t to par ticipa te in the U.S. National Cha mp ionship in October. I By the end of the seco nd ro und it was ev ident that the crowd was in for a n ight of very exciting racing. At this point in the competition Robert Pfet zirig, Scott Brant, Charlie Venega s and Bart Bast were the only rider s to win all of thei r events. In round three Brant was bested by Pfe tz i ng w hile Bast was second to Chris Manchester, leav ing only Venegas a nd Pfetzing w it h p erfect s co res as th ey ad va nced to the semis . The scoring sys tem allows only the winner of each of the four semi events to advance to the main even t. A real up set took place when Chris Manchester, the current National Cha mp ion, was leading his se mi-eve nt, It loo ked as if he would wi n eas ily but on lap th ree he crashe d; th is acci den t w as ver y cos tly as it puts more pressure ort him to do well in the rem a ining qualifiers. The four high po int men of the evening lined up for the main eve n t. Venegas and Pfetzing, still havi ng perfect sco res wer e in gates one and tw o, and Bran t and Faria sta rted in posi tion s three and fOUT. Venegas came out of the comer first and led dow n the back straigh t. In the second comer Pfetzing passed Venegas for the lead ' leavi ng Faria in th ird . Venegas pus hed hard to ret a ke th e lead with Faria tuck ing h is fr o n t whe el und ern eath fighting to take second place. On the third lap , Faria was able to pass Venegas for second . The race finished with Pfetzing taking the checke red flag first to remain perfect for the n ight. Fa ria and Venegas finished seco nd and th ird , respecti vel y wh ile Brant came in four th. "Winn ing the race tonigh t rea lly takes off the pressure," said Pfetzing . "N ow I know I'll make the Na tionals, so 1 can relax an d jus t go for more points." Team Excel's Michae l Dye got the holeshot on a Yamaha 1000 sponsored by K&N, followed by St. Loui s favorites Pr ob st Brot he rs Racin g who develop ed fue l tr ouble ea rly wi th the ir Su zuki-1100 and wer e forced to lea ve the race alter only se ven laps. Matthew Winnacher, who rod e the second half of the race for team dre aded had ne ver ridden the Honda F2 bef ore the race, gave Hayes credit for the win saying that .by the time he got on the bike the hard work was already done. Sec ond p lace wa s a ri d e r sw a p, in more ways than one , between K&N Racing 's Sam and Phil Mc Dona ld on a Yama h a 600 and Team Excel. Series favorites K&N foug ht a close battl e w ith Te am Excel. finishing second . Butlerdid it at Lawrenceburg ST By John Spurrier LAWRENaBURG, lN, jUtY30 Mike Butler got the hol eshot in the Pro- Am featur e and never looked back as he mot ored to an easy victo ry. Behind Butler, Joe Seyfferle, Gary Stogsd ill, Ron Gard ner, and Curt Snellin g main tained their pos itions to the finish . Tommy Hen sler holeshot his opposition in the 250cc feature a nd led from s tar t to finish. Gary Stogsd ill tangl ed wit h ano ther rider in turn two a t the start and was almost high-sided. He sa ved it a nd managed to regain the two positions he lost by lap seven . At the finish it wa s Hensler, Brad Hollander, Stogsd ill, Phillip Wolf, and Harry Cyrus. Bob Brown took the ea rly lead in the Open A feature only to be passed by Tommy Hensler on lap fo u r. He n sle r led the nex t six laps to the chec kered flag followe d by Brown, Sam Lowe, Ben Bellman, and Joe Bastin. Travis Burne tt went wire to wire to win the 125cc fea tu re over Kevin Hiler , Nic k Hummel, Phillip Wolf, and Damon Stapleton. David Wolf charged to an early lead in the 125cc fea ture bu t was passed by Nick Hummel on the th ird lap . Trav is Burnett then passed Wolf to claim the second positio n. Farnell wins at Orlando MX By Kyle Myers ORLANDO, FL AUG I , Over 150 rider s we re on han d for round 19 of the Florid a Motocr oss Club Series, held a t the Or landa Mo tocross Park on a very hot race da y. Ky le Farnell and Jason Thomas topped their respected classes. In the firs t 80 7-11 a nd 12-13 mot o Jason Th om as timed t he ga te perfectly to take the ho lesh ot over Jerem y Shutt lewo rth , An drei Bol o n i, C l int Sh ea ly a n d Fa rn ell. As th ey a pp roac hed the firs t do uble jump Thomas lost his drive and Shuttleworth flew by for the lead . Fa rn ell qui ckly di splaced Shealy a nd Boloni at the end of the ope ning lap and closed in on the leaders, Shuttleworth and Thomas in the 80 1213 class. Farn ell then jumped by Tho mas on the table top and in the same pla ce a lap la ter he took the lead from Sh uttleworth. After Farnell rocket ed by Shuttleworth and it looked like the win was in the bag. he fell ' in the back sec tion and Thomas retook the lead . With two laps remaining Farnell reeled in Thomas then ou t-mo tored him on a straightaway. Farnell he ld on for the win in the 7·11 with Thomas finish ing first in the 12-13 ahead of Shuttleworth and Lou is Lively . Shealy, Boloni, Ronn ie Wilkes and Mitchell Ho lstein followed Farne ll ho me. Tho mas kick ed things off wilh a bang to s ta rt th e second mo to. Sh u ttle wo rt h, Farnell, Wilkes and Louis gave chase. Lively tasted the sa nd as Boloni slipped by. Thomas opened up a th ree second ad van tage, while Boloni moved Wilkes back one pl ace.
