In th e back , a new Wh ite Pow er Bleed Adjustment (BA) shock incorporates simila r technology to tha t found in the [65 fork, using a tapered needle that KTM alleges automatically compensates for increased operatin g temperature and eli m in a tes associ at ed d ampin g fade cau sed by flu id vis cosity brea kdown . The shock also offers a wider range of externa l adjustm ent, In al mos t goes witho ut saying that th e linkages and leverag e ra tios -have been al te red to better s ui t th e n ew shock. Both the front and rear Brembo disc b ra kes ha ve been beefed up fo r increased and longer-lasting bra kin g power. The front brake system now has an "easy bleed " system, and the rear caliper has been redesigned so that the pads can be chan ged without having to remove the rear wheel. Som e of the major engine ch an ges include modifications to the clutch for easier pull and increased reliability, and a bu ilt-in th ermost at in th e engine's cooling system to minimize the chance of cold seizures. The intake area has been rewo rked, as well. A reed insert block has been insta lled to increase intake velocity; the diameter of the intake manifold is now larger, and different carbon-fiber reed s are used, as KTM says, " oo.to im prove th rottle response an d to increase top end power." . Also new is a cylinder head support bra cket for reduced vibration and better frame stability. All th e cha nges ma d e to th e 440 M/XC and E/XC, and 550 M/XC models are the same as the smaller displacement models, but are fewer in number. All feature the new IBS fork and BA shock, and the same changes to the disc brakes, swingarm and linkages. The 550 mod els have slightly closer gear ratios than before. The two 125cc models (SXand E/Xq feature mostly engine modifications. They now have a flat-top piston, a "better"-cooling cylinder head , a redesigned exhau st pipe, a reinforced power-valve flap and rod, and different-shaped gears in the tr a nsm issi o n for claimed smoother shifting. The two four-stro ke models feature many changes as well, mostly to the bigbore model. The LC4 620 is fitted wit h a bigger water-cooled engine, a larger clutch and airbox, a narrower rear sub-fra me section and a nicke l-pia ted header pipe. Both fou r-stroke models have all -new side panels, a slimmer gas ta nk with integ rated radiator shrouds, and a narrower seat with firmer padd ing. The 400 and 620 also share the sam e susp ens ion modifications as the o the r models. Perhaps the biggest new s of all is that none of the new KTM models - unlike some new Japanese models - have major manufacturer suggested re ta il price increases, the most being a $179 increase to the 250 SX, which carries a $4748 price tag. Despite the price increase, the 250 SX - for the first time ever - costs less than so me of its comparable Japa nese model s - i t's $147 les s th a n th e ' 94 Yamah a YZ250 and $151 less than the '94 Ho nd a CR25 0. The off-road KTM 250 E/ XC - which has a MSRP of 54898 is $101 less th a n th e ' 94 Yama ha YZ250 WR, an d un lik e the WR com es with a headli ght, odo meter and spark arrester as standa rd equip men t. The following are the MSRPs for the entir e '94 KTM lineup: 125 SX S4148; 125 E/XC 54248; 250 SX $4748; 250 E/XC $4898; 300 M /XC 54898; 300 E/XC 54998 ; 440 M /XC 548 48; 440 E/XC $4948; 550 M/XC 54898; 400 E/XC LC4 55498; 620 E/XC LC4 55598; 400 R/ XC LC4$5698, and 620 R/XC LC4 55798. ~ "MOTOCROSS '93" T-Shirt Be the first on your block to get your new limited edition Cycle News "Motocross '93" T-shirt.
