Cu rtiss got a gap late in the race and held on for secon d, Brad Du n ke l g rab bed the lea d in th e Unlimited GP, with Paul Van Der Heyde and n Shawn Conrad follow ing. By lap two, Murphy had moved in to th ird from his fifth-row starting spot. On lap three, Murphy was in second and on lap four he was in the lead and 1.93 seconds upon Dun kel. Wh ile Murp hy was b u sy up fro nt, Harrington was wo rking his way thro ugh traffic from a bad start. Murp hy was turn ing laps in the high 1:16 range, bu t Harrington was closing the gap at almost a half second pe r lap. On lap s ix, Harri ng ton w as chas ing Murphy for the lead. Two laps later, the pair were wheel to wheel, with Mu rp hy cross ing the line first u n til the whi te flag. The two continu ed to battl e, swaP'" pi ng the lead u n til on ly half a lap remained . While Alexander led for most o f the 25G-kilometer high-desert even t, Su rmo n was able to take the lead at the seven th checkpoin t (ou t of nine). Clarke was, however, definitely unw illing to simply rid e in Su rmon's dust just because of a long pit, and made up over three minut es in the final 25 miles for the overa ll win, aVE"raging 43.3 mph. The course started on the outski rts of Tecate - pas t the brewery - and wandered thro ugh the lush vineyards o f Va lle Los Pa lmas un til it reached the rock-strewn man Zceway. Rand y james edged out Stanley Norwoods, Mike Hai nes a nd Tempo fo r the first m o to holesho t A race-long battl e for the lead quickly deve lo p ed betwee n Ja mes, Norwoo d s a nd Tempo as the three riders sepa rated them selves from the rest of the field. The trio d iced right up to the checkered flag with james taking the win by 10 feet over Tempo . No rwoods tim ed the ga te perfectly to lead Mike Collier and James at the start of mote two. Collie r stud ied Norwoods lines for a couple of laps before d iving undernea th him to tak e the lead. On ce out front, Co llier was able to pull away for an uncontested moto win. Tempo had wo rked from a mid -pack start up to fourth behin d James w ith two laps remain· ing. Norwood s landed hard off a jump , aggr a. vating a previous knee injury, and he pu lled off the track which hand ed second to james. Tem po had mo men tum on his sid e and wen t aro u nd James with the wh ite flag ou t to take second and take the overall w in. James ' 1-3 score ea rne d him a second place trophy. Crosby's bigges t threat tonigh t was Chris Blanton wh o tucked in behind the firs t moto holesho t of Crosby and kep t him honest all the way to the checkered flag. Glenn Branson look thi rd ove r Mike Collier jr . Crosb y na iled the second mot o ho lesho t ahea d of Blanto n and Karl Huey. Crosby stam'CI to pull away wh ile Hu ey was making life miserable for Blanton in second. Ho ey bobbl ed coming out of a co r ne r allowin g Blan ton so me b reathing room. Blan ton slowly started to reel in Crosby bu t swap ped on a small set of jumps and went down hard. Hucy took over second for a lap be fore de velop ing bike pro blems and stopping .
