These three BOcc riders put 10 minutes be tw een them and the fou rthplace rider by the finish. The trio the n tal ked the ho sting clu b into a llo w ing th em to ra ce as a team in the C class, which th ey went ou t an d won by a m argin of four minutes. The A class raced away with Clay Hoe nshe ll, Bob Marin o, Ca rd well, Ber t Re y n old s and Clifford Goe rtz in a tigh t bat tle. Hoenshe ll and Ma rino tried to pull away, but Goertz arrived at the scoring a rea first. Some 64 seco nds se parated th es e five after 10 mil es. Leach raced pr o fessio nall y in the '60s in the Int er-Am Series, then qu it racing in the 70s and bou gh t wha t is now Albany SX. At the drop of the ga te in moto one, Leach, not known for his grea t starts, was fifth off the line. Nic k Rusinovich got the holesh ot with jack Co u lte r on h is rear wh eel , followed by Walt Sm ith, Bill Na ylor and Leach . Coulter q uickly rem ounted and in a few turns had rega ined the lead over Sm ith. Jim Parks, who had been hot on Leach's heels, followed right behi nd. Parks was unable to ma ke a mo ve on Smith and rem a ined th ere for the rem ainder of the race. With one lap to go, Leach moved in on Ru sin ovich , tryin g to find a way around.
