Steve Stone p iloted h is Ho nda CR250 to a pai r of
commanding wins in the 250cc Beginne r class at
round on e of the AXO Sport Summer Ser ies,
he ld at Carl sbad Race w a y . The Raci ng
Enterprises-promoted ser ies opener d rew an
u nusually large num ber of entries, mos t likely
due to the do zen AXO helm ets up for grabs in
the amateur classes.
Stone pu t his Honda into the lead at the start
of the first mo to, followed by Ryan Foote and
Robb ie Cost:\er. Stone set the pace in the ea rly
going , and it looked as if none of his competitors
could match it. Foote was a dis tant second , wi th
Comer hold ing do wn th ird . Cos ner, however,
had his hands full as both Brian Belew and John
Washb urn s hadow ed his ev e ry ' move.
Washburn seemed to have the drive to pass, but
his every att empt was thwart ed by Belew.
Stone had an easy ride to the finish ahead of
Foote, Cosner, Belew and Washburn.
The second moto started much the way tha t
mot a one did, with Stone and his Ho nda out
front. Foote was again second, with Comer and
Washbu rn in tow . The positions rema ined the
same to the finish wit h Stone taking an easy win
an d leaving man y people qu estionin g his status
as a Begin ner. Foo te hel d on for second wi th
Cosner and Washb urn in tow.

Lopez leaps to Starwest SX win
By David Procida
MORENOVALLEY,CA,jUNE 19
Toby Lopez turn ed in a wild whirlwind ride in
the first mo ta and stormed back to sweep the
second moto to score the overa ll win in the 80cc
12 - 16 yea r-o ld class d ur in g the Star w e st
Supe rcross Trop hy Series.
Kaw asaki rid er John Dinki ns g ra bbed the
holeshot in the first moto wi th Lopez less than
half a wheel-leng th behind. The pair went in to
tu rn tw o side by side and lau nche d over the
King Kong jump a little too close to each other.
. Dinkins and Lopez locked ba rs in mid·air and
both riders went down in a p ile in front of the
res t of the pack. Tim Langdo n man euv ered his
Yamaha around the fallen riders and took over
the lead wi tli Bob Woosley and Sea n Clar k in
tow .
Lopez and Dinkins both remoun ted qu ickly
and chased after the pack. Meanwhile, up front,
Langdon was on the gas and opened up a comfortable lead ove r Woosley. Lopez set a blistering pace afte r re mo u nti ng and closed to
Woo s ley ' s rea r fen de r by th e halfway poin t.
Lopez ho unded Woosley, but each of his pass
attem pts wer e foiled un til they app roached a
large jump . Lopez sailed into second and se t his
sights on Lang don, wh o had started to cru ise in
the closing stages.
On the las t lap, Lope z rail ed throug h the
esses and on to the rear fender of the uns uspecting Langdon, and the battl e was on. As the pair
app roached the step-u p jump, Langdon bobbled
and tha t was all Lopez need ed to steal the lead .
Lopez styled across the finis h line with Langdon
close behind . D inkins was third, a hea d o f
Woosley and Cla rk. .
Lope z rod e flaw les sl y in m ot o tw o a n d
grabbed th e h olesho t ahea d of La n ge n a nd
Woo sley. Dinkins sta rted po or ly and quickly
sliced th ro u gh th e pa ck, but he . took a spill
before th e Tw in Pea k s d ou b le ju m p a nd
dropped back.
Up front , Lopez styled his way to a comfortab le lead with Langdon now a short di st ance
beh ind . The remaind er of the moto was a follow-the -leader affai r, as Lop ez went un chal lenged to the fin ish ahead of Langdon, Dinkins,
Woosley and Clark.
In th e 125 cc Beginner cla ss, 12-year-old
Regina ld Mitchell showed his rear fender to the
res t o f the class by eas ily w inni ng both motes .
Dave Ra msey pla yed the b ridesmaid w ith 3-4
moto finishes . Rober t Morga n was sixth in mot a
one bu t finishe d thir d in the second go-ro und
for third ove ra ll. Round ing out the top five overall fin ishers we re Edd ie Nicho ls and Mark Cira.
Other action saw John Had dad nab the overall win in the +30 Beginner class, eve n though he
failed to wi n either mo to. In moto one, Steve
Baudoin grabbed th e ho les ho t, only to have
Ferran Pipe r slip by on the first lap. Piper we nt
on to w in th e mo to ov e r Haddad a n d Scott
Davis.
Baudoin holeshot mo to two , but aga in saw
his lea d imin ish when Mike Du n lap and Tim
Hu nziker fly by in the first lap. Had dad slip ped
by Hun zig er and too k over seco n d, b ut
Hunziger immediately passed him back.
Hunziger then closed the gap on Dunlap and
motored past in the back sectio n. Haddad also
mad e h is move on Du n lap and passed him in
the whoops, and raced into the lead by jumping
past Hunzige r on the follow ing jump.
.
On the white flag lap, Hunziger stru ck back
and wo n the moto ove r Haddad. Had dad was
th e overall winner over Hunz iger an d Piper,
wh o finished fifth in mo to two.
