Hicks flawless at Glen Helen Speedway By Elaine Jones SAN B ERNARDIN CA,JUNE 16 O, Gary Hicks ordered up a perfect night at Glen Hele n Speedway on Wednesday night, and came away with the wi ns in both the Scratch and Handicap ma in events. In the Scratch, the Cohon and Hicks Racing/Sisco Roofing /Cirello /STP-backed Hicks outgated the field from the number-three slot and simply ran a way with it. Mike Faria, out of the number-two spo t, locked in behind him while Scott Brant, coming from fou r, went to work on the ou tside and nipped Fari a at.th e c hec ke red to take th e place sp o t. Charlie Venega s completed the field with fourth. In the Handicap, Hicks ca me from the 30yard line and threw a wrench in the plans of Jim Estes to pick up another win when he got by on th e third lap. The two riders were extremely close, and neither would give an inch. Brant, off the 6O-yard line, went to work again on the out side and had worked his way up to fifth before getting high and crashing. Bobby Schwartz, off the 40, got by Bobby Heden on the fourth lap to claim third. Peter Lewis and Ja mie Macy became th e spoiler in the Sidecar main, taking the lead from Ross Milla r and Dale Leeder on the second lap , and never givi ng them a cha nce to take . it back. Lewis and Macy have been a thorn in the side of Milla r and Leeder this season, as they are the only team to ha ve beaten them this year . Dirk Ga rd ner and Doug Lynch were third. Mitch Hall. a border patrolman, came away the winner in a crash-marred Support ma in. The race actually ended on a red flag, but Hall had been in the lead a nd the go ld was his. Mike Reed and Rodney Sherman were second and third, respectively. Results SOtATOf: 1. Cary Hicks (Wn ); 2. Scott Brant a_w); 3. Mikr Fan.. a_w ); 4. Charlie Venrg_s a.w) . CONSI: 1.
