LAKE MILlS, WI, MAY 8
Thomas Bries won the 250cc class at Aztalan
Cycle Park.
In the first heat race, Ernie Duerr took the
holeshot with Tony Giomo and Bill Stomello on
his tail. After all was said and done, Duerr took
the win, followed by Giomo with Brian Zum
edging past Stomello for third.
Andy Fenwick motored to the front of heat
two, but was passed by eventual winner Curt
Knitt and Mark Diese_ At the end of lap one in
heat three, Bries was showing G.C. Giannini,
Dustin Smith and the rest of the field the fast
way .round. Things remained that way until
Smith and j.R. Schnabel displaced Giannini on
lap three. Schnabel, hard on the gas, motored
past Smith on the next lap and continued this
hectic pace for the remainder of the race, making
a bid for the lead on the wtlap, but coming up
about half a bike length short of Bries in the end.
In the first semi, Cliff Eckes looked like a
man on a mission as he said goodbye to the rest
of the field, stretching out nearly a half-lap lead
on second place by the finish.
In semi two, Smith passed early leader Chris
Wynveen for the lead and stretched it out for an
otherwise uneventful win. Diesi took the
holeshot of the final with Chris Wynveen, Tony
Giorno, Smith, Schnabel and field behind.
Wynveen got squirrely in turn two and,
although he managed to save it, the pack got by.
Giomo, Smith, and Schnabel kept the race exciting by mixing it up till the end, but finished in
that order behind Dies!.
In the first Senior heat, David Mengo, Larry
Piedow and Clarence Rupnow showed the
youngsters how to ride an exciting race. Mengo
took the holeshot with Rupnow and Piekow
close behind. Although Rupnow and Piekow
only swapped positions once, they remained
close enough to siphon fuel throughout the race.
In the end, it was Rupnow and Mengo with a
photo finish; Mengo was credited with the win.
Heat two was Ronald Schettl from start to
finish, with Butch Vrana comfortably in second.
The semi saw Mark Hanson grab the early lead,
followed by Pete DeGrand and Mark
Castonguay. Degrand, twisting the throttle hard,
took the lead on lap three. Castonguay, also on
the gas, passed Hanson before the end, following DeGrand in for second.
The final proved to be just as exciting with
Schettl taking the lead from the start with
Rupnow and Mengo right behind. Things were
fairly calm until the last lap, when Rupnow
went inside on Schettl. Not to be outdone,
Schetl! held the gas on justa little bit longer and
got the first spot back for the win.

Brant big winner at
Glen Helen Speedway
By Elaine Jones
SAN.8ERNARDINO, CA, MAY 19
Scott Brant captured both the Scratch and
Handicap main events at Glen Helen Speedway
Wednesday night, for the second week in a row.
Starting from the third slot, Cohon and
Hicks Racing/Cirello Racing/ Arai/Oakley /Up
Time/Inland Valley Chiropractic-backed Brant
ran a hard-charging Chris Manchester to the
ground as he t09k the lead on the white-flag lap.
He did have some outside help, as Manchester's
engine went south. Charlie Venegas was more
than happy to take over second with Gary Hicks
coming away with the show money.
Coming back for the Handicap main, Brant
came from the SO-yard line to take the lead from
jerry Black, and collected the gold for the second
time. Off the 40 yard line, Hicks was a bridesmaid again.
New Zealand's Ross Millar and California
teammate Dale Leeder are the team to beat in
the Sidecar class, and this week was no different.
The Mission Yamaha/Larry jacinto/IT2
Financial/Norm's Cycle-backed team seem to
get stronger every week and it's more a question
of who will. get second. Feter Lewis and jamie
Macy are the ones that get the closest. In the
main, Don Horsley and Danny Alvord tangled
with Dave Stephens and Eric Gilbert and came
out of it with a third-place finish, while Stephens
and Gilbert were in the infield.
jeremy Aden got nipped at the wire in the
Support main by Chris Harrington. Rodney
Sherman got third.

Hunziker hunts down Starwest
Motocross win .
By David A. Procida
MORENO VAU.EY, CA. MAY 8
Tim Hunziker, overcoming a sore ankle he
broke only a short while ago, pultogether two
impressive charges, one from mid-pack, to take
the win in the highly oompetitive 30+ Beginner
class at Starwest Supercross Park.
In moto one Steve Baudoin grabbed the
holeshot, but his I.ead was short-lived when
Phil Davis jumped past him over the stepdown. Hunziker was running third with Mike
Dunlap and Rick Snelson rounding out the top
five. Dunlap, however, soon dropped his bike
and Snelson doubled his way past Hunziker.
Hunziker, realizing that he was falling
behind, picked up the pace and reeled in
Snelson. Behind the pair, Ferran Piper was closing with Mark Brown on his tail Brown waited
for an opening and when Ferran went wide,
Brown dove inside of him for fourth. Piper
retaliated two comers later, but Brown man~
aged to slip by for good before the lap was finished.
Up front Hunziker and Davis were battling
for the lead, but it was going to be Davis with
the win followed by Hunziker, Snelson, Brown
and Piper.
Moto two saw Baudoin lead the pack into
turn one. But Dunlap slid up on the inside,
bumped Baudoin, who in tum bumped Piper,
but none of them crashed.
Dunlap managed to hold onto the lead with
Hunziker, Piper and john Cavanaugh all dicing
for second. First-mota winner Davis was stuck:
behind the Baudoin road-block, then the frontrunners opened up a small gap.
As the riders sorted themselves out
Hunziker claimed second and then dove inside
of Dunlap for the lead.
Back in the pack, Davis made his move on
Baudoin in the rockers and doubled his way
past the Honda rider and eventually into second. Davis and Hunziker then battled back and
forth for the lead. Davis waited as the pair
neared the Twin Peaks double and then flew
up and over Hunziker's KX. Davis took the
white flag and Hunziker turned up the heat
and was all over Davis the entire lap. Hunziker
finally pulled alongside of Davis and look over
the lead with two comers remaining to score
the moto win and overall victory.
