Beginner class at Marysville's Riverfront Park. topping not only the Beginners, but finishing ahead of all the Junior class riders as well. In the first moto, Neil Wright grabbed the holeshot with Hanson second. Brett Whitmore was dicing for third with Waylon Hall. Hanson didn't dilly-dally and passed Wright in the west comer of the track. Hanson was fast but a bit erratic, as he bounced from one obstacle to the next. By the second lap Hanson was ahead by many bike lengths. Whitmore held tough .in second despite the unfamiliar track. Han put his Honda on the inside at the finish-line hairpin turn and passed Wright after a tough battle over third place. Local racer Raj TaJchar charged hard at midrace to move into the top five. From there, it was steady to the finish with Hanson winning by a 'mile' over Whitmore and Hall. Talchar and Dan Oenuzzo finished fourth and fifth, respectively, and second and third in the Beginner class. In mota two, Denl1-zzo was hot, as he holeshot the pack in a big way. OeNuzzo was wide open in the first tum, but Hanson went wild on the following straight and closed the gap. Oenuzzo held the inside line, though, and refused to back off despite Hanson's pressure. Hanson experimented with a variety of lines trying to get around OeNuzzo, but the right line didn't materialize. Behind the lop two, the battle raged between Whitmore, Hall and Phil Scott. Wright look a fall in the back and never quite recovered. Wright elected to ~uise the track with no chance of catching the leaders. Talchar gated poorly and had a tough time making progress through the spread-out field. OeNuzzo made a slight bobble, and Hanson went by ~uickly. Once around DeNuzzo, Hanson seemed to settle down and raced smoother but fast enough to hold off his competition. After a few conservative laps Hanson let it all hang out and flew with style to the finish. DeNuzzo battled with Whitmore for second for the remainder of the race, with Whitmore reaching the flag first in the end. Han and Scott rounded out the top five. Results 125 JR: 1. MAY 15-16 While it was James Randolph who posted the win in the AMA/CCS Southwest Region Unlimited GP at Firebird International, it was runner-up MaIk Foster who drew the most attention by breaking his own track record. While Randolph took off to an immediate lead in the 18-lap race, Foster struggled to overcome a slow start. From a fifth, place position. he maneuvered into second by the halfway mark, and began to chase Randolph. During the pursuit, Foster logged some very fast lap times, iflcluding the official new record of 1:12.20. Despite the pace, Randolph's strategic riding style prevented Foster from being successful on several pass attempts. One rider who helped Foster set the record was Stu Morrison, who finished third in the Unlimited GP. In a battle to retain his numberone plate from challenger Steve Teschke, Morrison entered nine races over the weekend, with often just enough time to refuel his bike before gridding again. The exhausted Morrison waved Foster by in lap nine instead of trying to block him. Morrison's points battle with Teschke was reminiscent of the 1991 battle that saw Jim Cox and David Duprey fighting for the number-one plate. Back then, Cox and Duprey entered YSRSO classes to break the deadlock. This event found Morrison on Rick Williams' Honda Hawk in the Twins classes, while Teschke entered a single-cylinder '86 Yamaha SRX600 in the Sportsman and Lightweight classes. Although Teschke currently leads, with five rounds left in the Southwest Region's season, the championship is still in the air. The Expert-class grids were sparse due to contingency money at competing tracks, so amateurs outnumbered experts in many of the races. Several of the amateur racers are placing top five overall in their classes. Greg Perry won and finished thin! overall in the Solo era Endurance and Heavyweight Superbike sprints. According to retired roadracer Scott Willock, Perry will be a racer to reckon with. "Greg was my student last year in new riders' school," Willock said. "He looked good. I told him if he wanted to race, he should go for it, because he's got the potential." Results M/W GP EX: I. Mull Fo&Iu (Yam); 2. Stu Monison (Hon); 3. SIeove Teschke (Hon); .. The Mini Junior class went off the line behind the Mini Senior class in a staggered start. Bartlett jammed into the first turn ahead of Justin Weber and David Whitcraft. Bartlett opened up a second-second lead before the end of lap one then crashed right before the grandstand triple jump section. Weber took over the lead with Whitcraft in tow while Bartlett got his bike going again. Halfway into the second lap, Bartlett caught the leaders and he flew back into the lead over the finish line table-top jump. Bartlett then ran away for the win despite another minor get~ff near the end. Weber was able to hold off Whitcraft to take second. In the second molo, Bartlett rode flawlessly, easily taking the win. Bartlelt passed every Mini Senior rider who started ahead of him except for the Mini Senior class winner Chris Berry.
