~ DIRT TRACK SJl!!!!gfi_eld_Mil_Oe_Ph_ot_oR_ev_ie_w _ e Mi erevisite s you no doubt noticed, the Dave Hoenig-penned report 01\ the Memorial Day Springfield Mile round of the AMA Giand National Championship Series that ran in last week's. newspaper ran sans photos (that was a file pic of winner Ricky Graham). Why? When the race was rained out 01\ Sunday and rescheduled for MOl'Iday, our staff member who was on hand tried to change his flight plans. "Sony." said the airline rep. "All those flights are full. The best we can do is put you on standby." Seid staff member passed on that offer and returned to California. Hoenig offered to write the report and then fax it to our Long Beach office on Tuesday morning. Bert Shepard offered to ship his film from the Indianapolis airport which he would pass the evening of the race on his way home to Ohio. The film that Shepard shipped to us on Monday evening failed to arrive by presstime the following day. It did show up a day later. on Wednesday. June 2. We won't name the company that failed to live up to their delivery promiserbut we'll give you a hint: Neither rain, nor snow, etc., etc., etc. Anyway, here's a look at the Springfield Mile as seen through the Nikon viewfinders of Bert Shepard's cameras. Enjoy. 01 A Ricky GI'ilham (3) started the National from the penalty line, but by lap three had taken over at the front of the pack. Once into the lead, Graham left the rest of the field behind to battle over second. The win was Ricky Graham's eighth at the Illinois State Fairgrounds. An elated Graham sent his front end skyward during his victory lap. 16 Rodney Farris (92), Chris Carr (1) and Mike Hale (32) battled over the runnerup spoL It was Hale who prevailed at the checkered flag over Farris and Carr.
