Davis smokes J~m at Starwest By David Procida 34 PERRIS, CA. APR. 24 Mike Davis took a hard..,.med win in the 125cc Novice class aIter chasing Dean VanRipper throughout moto one and then in the opening laps of moto two during the first round of the SlarWest Supercross Ticket Give-A-Way Series. In moto one, Kawasaki-mounted VanRipper rocketed out of the gate with David Hughes and Davis hot on his heels. Brian Brown rounded tum one in fourth, just ahead of Eric Sealy and Dennis Turner. Turner was the first rider to make a position change as he jumped to the inside on the rockers and passed both Sealy and Brown, but Brown held the inside line on the double just after the rockers and repassed Turner. Up front, Davis took the outside line and railed his way past Hughes and into second, but VanRipper was still out of his reach. By turning up the throttle a little more, Davis began to close on VanRipper. The leader caught sight of the approaclting Davis and also picked up his speed. At about the three-quarter mark, Davis began to back off, and in the remaining laps VanRipper went unchallenged. Davis came home in second with Hughes. B,rown, and Turner rounding out the top five slots. VanRipper stormed out of the gate to take charge of moto two, but this time Davis was all over him and forced a bobble from the Kawasaki pilot that cost him the lead. Davis was giving it his all and began to pull away from VanRipper. VanRipper was not alone in second, as Hughes had closed to his rear fender and was now looking for a way past. This battle lasted the next few laps with neither rider changing positions, but it was a battle between Seely and Hansen that the crowd was focused on. It may have only been for the sixth place, but you couldn't tell as the two riders battled tooth and nail as if it were for the win. On the last lap Seely launched his Kawasaki over the Twin Peaks double-jump, passing a very surprised Hansen and the two drag-raced for the finish line tabletop. It was Hansen who got the nod but only by less than a ha1f-a-wheel's length. Finishing first through fourth were Davis with both the moto and the overall wins, VanRipper with second ahead of Hughes and Brown. In the 12Scc Pro ranks David Pingree took advantage of a mid-air collision between Mike Healey and Donald Upton to take a second moto win after finishing third behind the pair in mato one. Healey was able to continue after the collision, but a badly shaken Upton retired for the night. Healey hit the afterburners on his Suzuki but couldn't catch Jason DePatto for the second place finish that would have given him second and the overall win. In the 250cc Pro class, Pingree and Upton claimed the top two slots with Healey coming in third. When Upton was a no-show in moto two, Pingree was almost assured the win but this did not stop Healey from dominating the moto. The Tuf Suzuki rider never let up and when he had pulled a safe distance away from Pingree began to style for the spectators over the Twin Peaks double jumps. Healey took an easy mote two win with Pingree taking home the overall and the cash. David Bagwell rounded out the top three positions and then came back to run away with the 30+ Expert class win. Troy Morgan took the overall win in the 250cc Novice class without winning a single moto. Kenny Miller, who won the first moto, could only manage a fourth in moto two and second moto winner, Marc Burnett, had chalked up a fifth in moto one. Resulls t.,_ P/WS'11< 1lI!G, Gnn. (Yam);; 2. ff and had a two minute lead after the first of three 28-mile loops. Oosest competitor Brunning was hampered by two factors - he was riding a smaller 250cc Yamaha YZ250, and he tangled' with Desi Wolfe right off the start and went down, tweaking his left knee. "1 tried to stuff him and it didn't work," said Bruning. Bruning eventually passed Wolfe by the fivemile point, but couldn't make a dent in Abbott's lead. Destry had the course wired, turning in two identical lap speeds of S2.9 mph. Bruning was nine minutEs back after the 84 miles were c0mpleted. Wolfe completed his first race since breaking a leg at the '92 Parker 400 and was satisfied with third place. Bryan Dobmeier, riding a Honda CRSOO, was the first Amateur rider to take the checkered flag, and Gwin Vaughn, on a Honda CR25O, was the next. "I could run up on him (Dobmeier) in the twisty stuff," said Gwin. "But that sao of his would move away on those straight roads." Vaughn and Wolfe's fastest laps were the final one, as they were separated at the Bag by only 13 seconds. Matt Murphy demonstrated why he is rapidly becoming the new hot shoe, as the l~year-old rider placed his Honda CR12S firmly into 10th overall, averaging over 41 mph on the sandy and whooped-out course. APR. 18 Jassen Smith dominated the 125cc C main in the first round of the AMA Northern California Championship Rough Scrambles Series at Stockton Fairgrounds. Smith smoked off the line and out of the first tum with Gavin Haley and Albert Coble in close pursuit. But Smith was untouchable, as he stretched out his lead with every lap and eventually scored an unchallenged victory. The real battle was for second, with Coble passing Haley on the second lap. The two riders ran wheel to wheel for the next five laps, then Haley made his move on the white flag lap, passed Coble and went on to take the runner-up honors. After the race, winner Smith said, "The corners really flow and it (the track) is definitely fast - that's my kind of track!" Glen Beckerdite came out of retirement and did not pay much respect to last year's 200cc C class Champion Bill Stamos. Beckerdite rode a close second place to Stamos in the heat race, but pulled a nice lead on him in the main. It just wasn't Stamos' day when, on the third lap of the eight-lap feature, Stamos went down and Tonny CaIIizo took advantage of the situation by grabbing second. Callizo rode his Honda XR200 to its limit and Stamos couldn't get close enough to steal second place back. Meanwhile, Beckerdite cruised to victory, with Callizo and Stamos finishing second and third, respectively. Resulls P /W: l. Cluiatopher Gu~jardo (Yam); 2. Randy Lawlor (Y-); 3. Mo. Gomer. J,.
