APR. 24 Kawasaki Team Green/Sinisalo/Enzo Racingsponsored Craig Decker won three out of four motos entered en route to victories in both the 125 and 250cc Pro classes at GFI's Super Saturday MX, held at Perris Raceway. Decker assumed the lead in the first USee Pro moto with Team Kawasaki's Ryan Hughes running second. Hughes patience paid off in the closing moments of the race when Decker gave his green machine a little too much throttle in a slippery turn and almost slid out. Decker's loss of momentum was all Hughes needed to squirt into the lead. Decker tried to come back for a last-lap pass, but bobbled and spun himself in a circle in a set of jumps near the finish line area. Hughes went on for the win ahead of Decker, Team Hot Wheels rider Jamie Dobb and Buddy Antunez. The second moto featured what was arguably the best racing of the day. Dobb led the opening five laps of the race while Decker and Hughes engaged in a slam-fest. Hughes took the first poke and cut. in front of Decker just after a series of jumps. Decker, not to be outdone, planted his JO( down low under Hushe'! in the following turn and uprooted Hughes from his lie. Decker was in a hurry to escape the anticipated wrath of Hughes and plowed over Dobb half a lap later to take over the lead. Dobb picked hlmself up off the ground and appeared quite disoriented. Once out front, Decker put his macltine-like riding to work and went on unchallenged for the moto and overall wins. Hughes suffered a brief loss of concentration and went down, but had no problems remounting and holding off Antunez for third. Dobb finished a distant fifth. Decker dominated both 250cc Pro motos with relative ease, topping Antunez, Terry Fowler, wildman Mike Metzger and Larry Unkogie. Local Perris dentist Marc Crosby led the first 30+ Intermediate moto from start to finish, while Bob Johnson and Jimmy Hanson battled all moto long for seCond. Hanson took the position during the final lap by charging past Johnson in a rough, technical area of the track. The second moto saw Johnson grab the holeshot and lead the first half of the race. Once again, Hanson was on the move and took over the lead on the sixth lap of the lO-lap race. Hanson wasted little time pulling away once he took over the lead. Johnson. meanwhile, battled to the finishline with Crosby for second. Crosby got the nod by virtue of a good drive off the finish line jump. Results 32 P/W BEG: 1. A lap later McCown went down in the sweeper and this allowed Nelson to close the gap between the two, but the final downfall for McCown was when he dropped his Honda two turns before the finish and this time Nelson was close enough to capitalize on the error. Nel80n took the checkered ahead of McCown, Pearce, Lunde and rounding out the top five was Rodrigo Pill At the drop of the gate in moto two it was apparent that McCown was out for the win. He immediately pulled out to a three-bike lead while Nelson was recovering &om a poor 8tart. Lunde, who had gated second, was holding his own until the pack hit the the Twin Peaks double and this is where both Pearce and Nelson doubled their way past the Yamaha rider. Nelson had the inside line and went by Pearce after the double but this was only temporary as Pearce jammed his way back by and into second. On the next lap Nelson went by for good and pulled away from the the YZ rider. Pearce may have gotten out of the frying pan but he jumped into the fire as Lunde was closing quickly. The Torrance resident began showing Pearce his front tire in the tum8 and then escalated his efforts, trying to bump Pearce off the line. The pressure 6nally paid off as Lunde slipped by and just as Pearce was attempting to get back by he lost the front end of his yz and went down. Up front Nelson had dosed on McCown but time had run out and with only a couple of bike lengths between them, the checkered flew for McCown. When the totals were posted it was McCown with the win followed by Nelson. Lunde, Pearce and PilL Other Novice action saw Tony Feldhaus take a double-mota win in the Vet (3lH-) Novice class. Feldhaus went wire-w.wire in mota one and then came from midpack and worked his way up to the front by the third lap in mota two after Tun Murphy holeshot moto two. Murphy held onto the runner-up slot and when coupled with his firat-moto third, that earned him second overall over Steve Laninovich. John Cuccia racked up a pair of fourths to edge out Chris Burr. Procida MORENO VALLEY, CA, APR. 17 David McCown put his Honda into the winner's circle in the 250cc Novice class at Starwest Supercross Park, but it wasn't an easy win, as he came up through the ranks in both motos and finished second in moto one before winning moto two. When the gate fell for moto one it was Yamaha pilot Dustin Lunde leading the pack into turn one with Christopher Nelson and McCown in hot pursuit. Lunde fought off the advances of the pair through the Snake Pit and the Dunlop Rockers, but when all three simultaneously rounded the comer leading to the double-triple KingKong jump, both Nelson and McCown soared over and past the leader. It was a drag race for the far comer of the track and Nelson held it on a little longer and was the first rider to crest the 40-foot Animal Leap jump, with McCown in his shadow. McCown dogged the JO( rider for the next lap and when Nelson jumped too far into the COSTA MESA. CA, APR. 9 Former British League racer Gary Hicks won the eight-man, eight-lap Handicap main at Costa Mesa Speedway, while Charlie Venegas, the recently crowned I.C.E. National lee Racing Ownpion. survived three restarts to capture the top spot in the Scratch main. Jerry Black was vietorious in the Support main event. Hicks started the Handicap main stationed on the 4O-yard line next to first-week winner Brad Oxley and Rob Pfetzing. Ten yards in front on the 30 were Andy Northrup, John Aden and Jason Chism. Rounding out the field was Bobby Schwartz on the 50 and Jim Estes on the 20. Estes grabbed the initial lead &om his &ont position, followed closely by Aden, Chism and then Northrup. Oxley was the first 40 yarder off the line, but suffered mechanical failure before completing a single lap. Hicks avoided the slowing Oxley and moved up quickly on the outside to overtake Chism and Northrup by the completion of lap two. Meanwhile, in front of the pack Aden was growing weary of following the lessthan-blistering pace of Estes, and tried to move around him on the outside. That was all the room Hicks needed, as he drove hard on the inside line and slid past Aden as they exited turn four of the third lap. Hicks then pursued Estes uninterrupted, showing his experience to the young rider off the fast inside groove and moving into the lead. Estes never fully recovered, and dropped back to finish a distant seventh. Aden saw the error of his outside move and dropped back in line to hold the secondplace spot. Northrup finished in third place, just inches ahead of Pfetzing. The Scratch main event was one for the books, as it took five attempts to complete the race. Schwartz in gate three and National Champion Chris ~ter in two brought out the first red flag as they both appeared to push and then break the starting tapes. Both wereallowed to restart, but fell together in the first turn attempting to catch quick-gating Mike Faria. The third trip off the starting line found Schwartz and Manchester on the ground again, and this time Venegas also went down with Faria once again unscathed and clearly out in front. After a lengthy pause caused by Manchester unpretzeling himself from Schwartz' bike, the last restart was ready to get underway. Faria apparently grew tired of leading red-flagged heats, and was the last off the line. Venegas used his pole position to good advantage as he led from start to finish. Schwartz was second until he over-slid in turn one of lap three and Manchester took over the second spot, which he maintained until the checkered flag. Faria's late charge came up a few inches short and he had to settle for third. Results SCRATOI: 1. Q\arlie Verqu (Wes); 2. Q\ris ManchntK (J.Jw); 3. MIke FoJrY (Wet); 4. Bobby Schwartz ewes). APR. 18 Doug Reiterer started off the new season at Pleasure Valley MX in grand style by wirming the USee C divisioo one class. The runner-up was Ryan Michalovicz. It was Bridgett Smallwood, however, who got things started with the holeshot in the first l25cc C division one moto. But her moment or glory only lasted a short time before Reiterer and James Matthews shot past. Reiterer and Matthews battled for the lead, until Reiterer broke from Matthews to score the moto win with 10 seconds to spare over Matthews. Reiterer came back to score a wiJ'e..to--wire victory and claim the overall victory. Meanwhile, on the adjacent Pee Wee course, Yamaha-mounted Gene Stull put together backto-back moto wins to take home the first-place trophy in the SOcc Pee Wee division. ResullB 80 (7·tt~ 1.
