Mike Garrett Rancho Palos Verde, CA A gentle giant We lost Mike Belshaw recently. He was the owner of Federal Way Cycle Center in Federal Way, Washington. He was greatly involved in sponsoring many motocross, flat track, Jet Ski and snowmobile racers. He opened up his store and his home to visiting racers many times. More than once we saw him put aside working on his own kids' bikes at the races to assist customers so that they could make their next race. He was always good for a ride to the races if another parent couldn't make it that weekend. He was a very compassionate person. Full of emotion, he loved his family and friends very much. The motorcycle industry was more than just his bread and butter. It was a very important part of his everyday reason for living. In my mind he was a gentle giant. Big Mike is what everyone called him. The Kuebler Family Sumner, WA Help a motorcyclist At the Trailblazers Banquet on April 3, Bill Bagnell, who was the master of ceremonies, gave Skip Van Leeuwen two minutes to talk about my re-election campaign. Sammy Tanner grabbed a fish bowl and collected $160.50 toward a mailer that will be sent to 1819 AMA members who reside in 47 Los Angeles County cities that will be voting in the April 20 primary election. The total cost of the mailing is $611.56. Something gave me a gut feeling of organization when I called the number in your calendar regarding a Ride for Kids dual sport ride. A recorded message, from a very customer-focused Paul Slavic of American Honda, informed me of the necessary data and said to leave a number for a call back. Paul's persistence to reach me was amazing, calling several times until he reached me - not· satisfied with leaving a message. The amount of effort put into this day of fun by American Honda, Mike Traynor, and over 60 sponsors, and capped off with the personal touch of Chuck Miller, gives an image' of caring for our young children in America who are stricken with cancer that should be applauded by all of us. Over $16,000 was donated with 100% of the donations going directly to pediatric brain tumor research, thanks to all the sponsors. This event should set the stage for our off-road industry to follow for years to come. I'm sure we can all relate to the moving moments of the day whether you were there or not, and how good it feels to do something for a charitable cause, especially these kids. I've been riding for over 25 years, in every type of event created, and have never felt so moved to express my feelings in a letter to the editor. Keep up the good work, motorcycle industry! The kids are our Did we thank him enough? Probably -not. Please, Mike, know that we did appreciate everything you did for all of us. We will all miss you very much. We wanted you to know you made a great contribution while you were here and we will never forget you, Godspeed, Big Mike. P.O. Box 498, Long Beach, CA 90801-Q498 (310) 427-7433; (213) 636-8844.
