1993 TRIPLE CROWN AWARD FOR
SPEEDWAY ICE RACING
Charlie Venegas (center) earned the World Cup Ice Speedway Series title.
Scott Chesser (731) led Brook Fluker (157) and Joey Ausbrooks (111) at Burns MX Park.
Expert classes at the Spring Opener at Burns
Park MX Park. However, Chesser was not the
only double-class winner on the day. Freddie
Mitchell, Justin puzz and Ben Boykin also had
flawless rides. Mitchell topped the 125cc
Intermediate and 125/25Occ Open classes; Puzz
aced the 125 and 250cc Novice divisions, and
Boykin won the 80cc Senior and Open classes.
Perhaps the best racing of the day was produced by the 125/25Occ Open and 125cc Expert
class riders. Whep the gate dropped in the first
moto that combined both the 125/25Occ Open
and 125cc Expert classes, Justin Puzz, an Open
class competitor, blasted into the lead ahead of
fellow classmates Joey Ausbrooks, Brook Auker
and Freddie Mitchell. Chesser, one of only three
125cc Experts in the field, purposely waited for
the entire pack to round the first tum before getting underway.
With a clear track ahead of him, Puzz pulled
away, while the rest of the pack duked it ·out.
Mitchell eventually broke free of Fluker and
Ausbrooks to take control of second place but
had no chance of catching the leader. Puzz,
Ausbrooks and Auker then spent the rest of the
moto dicing back and forth for third, a battle
that Ausbrooks emerged out on top. Fluker settled for fourth ahead Joseph Furr. Chesser finished ahead of his fellow 125cc Expert competitors John White and Rod Frank.
Chesser decided not to hang back in the second moto, but it was Fluker who shot into the
lead, nonetheless. Fluker's moment of glory
didn't last for long, however, when he crashed
in a wide sweeper and Chesser inherited the
lead.
Puzz, Mitchell, Ausbrooks and the rest of the
pack battled for the rest of the race and, at the
finish, Mitchell ended up second overall in the
moto, one spot behind Chesser. puzz finished
thin!, just ahead of Ausbrooks. In the final overall column, Mitchell scored the win in the
125/250cc Open class ahead of Puzz,
Ausbrooks, Furr and Allen Haynes. And
Chesser locked up the 125cc Expert class victory
ahead of White and Frank.

Ernst earns Cycleland
Motocross win
By Michael Rich
OOCO,CA., MAROl14
Kawasaki-mounted Darin Ernst came out on
top of a crashed-filled race to win the combined
250cc NovicelJunior race at Cycleland
Speedway.
When the gate dropped on the first moto,
Brian Powell powered into the early lead followed closely by Rich Boleman and Dan Calliett.
Ernst faltered at the start and lagged far behind
the rest of the pack. Boleman was the first victim of the stadium track, as he flew off Itis
mount over the table-top jump. By the end of the
second lap, Ernst had worked his way to fifth.
On the next lap he had moved past three of the
four riders in front of him and was glued to
Powell's rear fender. With a single lap left, Ernst
moved-to the inside of Powell and leapt past
him over the double jump. Ernst took the win
over Powell, while Jim Finney finished third.
Powell again timed the gate perfectly and
moved into the lead at the start of the second
moto. Boleman followed in second, but was displaced by Ernst over the dO!Jble-jump before the
end of the first lap. At this point, things became
very confusing as rider after rider parted com·
pany with his motorcycle. Powell and Ernst tangleet over a small jump and went down. This
moved BoJeman into first and Kevin Mitchell
into second. Within half-a-Iap, Mitchell endoed
over the double. This moved Todd Webber into
second.
By this time, Bolernan was starting to tire,
and Webber was able to pass him on the back
straight. Ernst moved back to third and
attempted to pass both Boleman and Webber in
the same tum. He was able to get by Boleman
but went down when he contacted Webber's
rear wheel. This moved Mitchell, who crashed
earlier, back into second. Upon reaching second, Mitchell immediately threw his Yamaha
away over a table-top. At the finish, Webber
took the win followed by Ernst in second and
Boleman in third. With his second place in the
second moto, Ernst scored the overall win. Jim
Finney took the overall in the Novice class.

Swink spanks 'em at Marion MX
By Kyle Myers
REDDICK, FL, MAR. 14
Team Suzuki's Brian Swink captured the win in
the 16-24 year-old and 250cc A classes at round
three of the Horida Motocross Club Series, held
at Motocross of Marion County.
Lino Zecca jumped out in front at the start of
the first 250cc A class race. Josh Latina, Swink,
Gary Semics and Travis Blackburn gave chase.
Latina slid by Zecca in the second tum, as did
Swink.
Blackburn displac.ed Semics to take over
fourth, while Latina and Swink pulled well
away.from the rest of the pack. Zecca faded off
the pace and dropped well into the pack.
Swink stalked Latina, showing him a wheel
in almost every tum. As the white flag flew,
Swink jumped past Latina and sailed into the
lead. Before he greeted the checkered flag,
Swink pulled out a four..seocnd lead on Latina.
Blackburn, Semics and Chris Lemon rounded
out the top five finishers.
In the second moto, Marty Burr led the way
with Lemon, Blackburn, Latina and Zecca in
tow. Swink sand-bagged at the start and rounded the first tum nearly last.
Blackburn motored past Lemon and Burr to
take over the lead, but fell over in a turn and
dropped out of contention. Latina was on the
gas, and zapped Lemon and Burr for the lead.
Swink was not far behind, and motored into second a few tums later.
Once again, it appeared as if Swink was
waiting for the last lap to make his move. When
the white flag flew. Swink again jammed past
and on to the moto and overall wins aboard his
Answer/Scott/Bell/DunJop/HT-sponsored factory Suzuki RM25O.
Latina, Semics, Lemon and Bill Wallin
rounded out the top five overall finishers.
Swink returned to the track to easily walk
away from the competition in both 16-24 yearold motos. Zecca finished second in both outings
for second overall.
In other race action, Latina made short work
of the 125cc A class with a double-moto sweep.
Latina led both contests from start to finish to
take the overall over Brad Loclchart and Wallin.
