The promoter would probably hve been more understanding, as CART, NASCAR and other car racing organizations a promoter deals with will not run races on super-speedways in the rain. Neither should the AMA. . Tracy Hagen Edin!!, MN Pete Wening Toledo,OH Godspeed, Stan SoCal vintage MX Could someone tell me if AHRMA has discontinued staging vintage motocross racing here in southern California? I have checked the AHRMA listings in the Cycle News calendi\r listings and . there hasn't been any listings for vintage-only races at any of the southern California tracks this year. Has interest waned so badly that only an occasional class\ mixed in with modern bike events, is left? I'm sure I'm not the only one with this question. SteveCaro San Diego, CA AHRMA-West Regional MX Series rounds are scheduled for Glen Helen OHV Park in San Bernardino on July 31 and at Los Angeles County Raceway in Palmdale on October 3. In addition, AHRMA SoCal Local Series rounds will take place at Glen Helen on June 20 and at L.A. Counfy Raceway on August 22 and October 3 ... Editor. Watch the rule book I am glad to hear Harley-Davidson is going to build a (superbike) road racer. I hope they don't get the rules changed in road racing like they did in dirt track when they couldn't compete with the Honda 750. Or worse yet, make a class for a Harley-Davidson-only (superbike) road race. Harold Rohrer DeWitt,MI United we stand, divided we fall Henny Ray Abrams' guest editorial (March 10 issue) was the best opinion piece I have read in Cycle News since 1985, when you ran a series of articles critical of Terrance Scanlon at the Consumer Product Safety Commission for working every angle possible to see three-wheel ATVs banned. Most AMA members, I reckon, are motorcycle enthusiasts and join the AMA to see that the association continues its role as.government watchdog and lobbyist. As a group we have a voice tha t commands a tten tion in Washington - if our senators and representatives told our AMA lobbyists that they only deal with individuals, we'd all be up a creek. Ironically, the internal structure of the AMA - at least in its professional road racing organization - chooses to use the individuals-only policy. It is further ironic that the AMA has not, apparently, noticed that some of the HM's biggest blunders in recent years have occurred at events where heavy rainfall made road racing virtually impossible. Racers want to race. The decision reached by Jimmy Filice, Chris D'Aluisio and others at Phoenix' goes contrary to what they worked months for to be ready. When Filice and D'Aluisio say it's unsafe to race Phoenix in the rain - especially when it's the first race and no championships are on the line - it's gotla be unsafe. The only mistake I think Filice and On Thursday, March 18, motorcycling lost another special person, Stan Miles. Stan wasn't a big time racer or promoter or a high profile type of guy, but what he did have was a heart as big as Mount Rushmore. Stan got involved in motorcycling through his son and soon got very involved in every aspect of the organizational end of the local AMA district. He started a local newspaper called Maryland Cycle News and then Cycling East. It catered to all the local amateur racers. It wasn't long before he was on the board of directors of District 7 and his home was in fact the local district office. He served in every capacity imaginable, from promoter to reporter to referee to anything that needed to be done on any given Sunday or Saturday night. For a number of years he was the national referee at the Loretta Lynn's Amateur MX Championships in Tennessee. His honesty and dedication were without question. A few years back, Stan and his wife Dorothy received the Dud Perkins Award from the AMA for their outstanding and continued contributions to motorcycling. You could fill this entire newspaper with all the things that Stan had done over the years for every amateur rider he ever met or knew about. Stan never stopped giving his time, energy and love to this sport. Stan treated everyone that he met as if they were his only child -or only friend. Even those who were closest to him were constantly amazed at how much he cared and was willing to give for others. I will miss Stan with all my heart but motorcycling will miss him more. Godspeed, Stan. Lee Abemathy Baltimore, MD It was my privilege to write for Stan's newspaper, Maryland Cycle News, nearly a quarter of a century ago. When requested to change lhe name of his paper by the owners of this publication in 1971, Stan went hunting for a new title. Two members of the Baltimore Counly Trail Riders Association, Bob Bond and yours truly, had made a stab .at enterinj the publishing business via a magazine tentatively iitled Cycling East. When we closed the boo/( on that effort, we turned the title over to Stan. The rest is history. Stan's wife Dorolhy preceded him in death; they are survived lry their son Chip .. Editor.
