$13,500 as did a 1980 XR750 campaigned by three-time Grand National Champion Jay Springsteen. TUF Racing's Mike Healey, the motocrosser who finished second in the 1991 World Championship 250cc MX Series and now contests the AMA 125cc Nationals, was recently featured in a edition of MTV's Headbanger's Ball. The episode was recorded at Daytona Beach, Florida, during Camel Motorcycle Week and concentrated mostly on the "biker" happenings on Main Street. In his portion of the show, Healey styled for the camera before explaining the differences between a motocross bike and a Harley-Davidson street bike. KTM will be offering U.S. riders who qualify for the 1993 ISDE in Holland the opportunity to rent specially prepared KTMs. The rental cost will be $1500 and that will include delivery of the bike to the event site, insurance and registration. In a 4-3 decision on Monday, March 15, the California Supreme Court said landowners are immune from personalinjury lawsuits filed by individuals injured while using land for recreation even if the property contains potential hazards and is not suitable for recreation. Although a 30-year-old state law grants immunity to landowners who open their property to recreation, the decision means that immunity is also granted to owners of property such as unattended construction sites, farm equipment storage areas, etc. A case involving an eight-year-old boy who had been injured while watching friends play on farm equipment, prompted the decision. The case had been dismissed by a county superior court judge who cited the recreational immunity, but a state appeals court had reinstated it after ruling that the land was not suitable for recreation. House of Motorcycles, a Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha dealership in San Diego, California, will host their 2nd Annual Sport Bike Service Clinic from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 3. CMC will open the gates for the first time at its newest facility, the Temecula Motorsports Complex in Temecula, California, and conduct open practice on Friday and Saturday, April 2-3. The rider fee is $10 and there's no charge for spectators. For more information, call 619/246-7262. Devil's Ridge MX in Sanford, North Carolina, will host the AMA Loretta Lynn's Southeast Area Qualifier over the April 10-11 weekend. A drawing will be conducted and one lucky rider will go home with a new Honda CR80 that has been donated by Honda-Suzuki of Sanford. Sunday is Dunlop Day and Dunlop tires will be awarded to class winners. For more information, call 919/776-2412 or 776-1767. The 23rd Annual El Trial de Espana will be held April 18 at the Cougar Flats, Johnson Valley Off Highway Vehicle area in Lucerne, California. The American Trials Association-promoted event traditionally attracts top riders from across the Nation. Laguna Seca silent auction to benefit Adamo famil W hat began as a one-man, one-item silent auction to raise money for the widow and children of Jimmy Adamo has expanded into a multi-item auction that will be presented by Laguna Seca Raceway and Cycle News. Immediately following Adamo's death in the March 7 Daytona 200, Cycle News associate editor Paul Carruthers came up with an idea to raise money for the Adamo family. Several years ago, Carruthers had borrowed a set of leathers from Wayne Rainey that Rainey wore as a member of Team Honda. He called Rainey to get his permission to conduct a silent auction of the leathers and Rainey not only gave Carruthers permission but said he would donate a set of Team Marlboro Roberts Yamaha leathers he wore on his way to his third World Championship title last year. After an ann~cementof the silent auction of the leathers appeared in this section last week, we were contacted by readers who wished to donate other items and by Mary-Ellen Wright-Rana of SCRAMP. Wright-Rana offered the track's assistance and display space during the April 16-18 AMA National Championship Road Race Series meet. All proceeds from the silent auction will be donated to the Jimmy Adamo Benefit Fund, which was created to provide financial assistance to his widow Melanie and their two young children. . Bill Spencer, owner of Mountain View Distributing of San Jose, California, will coordinate both the approval of items for the silent auction and delivery of the items to the track and then delivery to successful bidders. (In a silent auction, bidders state their bid, unaware of the amount others have bid. The item goes to the person who bids the highest amount.) Owners of racing memorabilia who wish to donate the items should contact Spencer at 408/436-8228. To place bids on the two sets of Rainey leathers (they will be auctioned as separate items, not as a pair as originally announced) or an autographed copy of Storia Della Ducati (The Ducati Story) by Bruno Ducati (in Italian, released in 1991 and inscribed to Cycle News editor Jack Mangus), call Mary Wright at 408/6485116 or send a fax message to 408/373-0533. Include name, address, both home at:\d business phone numbers, which item you're bidding on and bid amount. Other auction items will be announced in this section weekly and all donated items will be on display at Laguna Seca during the April 16-18 AMA National weekend. The Jimmy Adamo Benefit Fund auction will close at the conclusion of racing on Sunday, April 18. Top bidders will be notified by phone or mail. Shipping charges will be the responsibility of the successful bidders and bidders will be requested to write separate checks for those charges. . The Los Altos Dirt Bikers' Cow Mountain Qualifier, a District 36 reliability enduro that was rained out earlier this year, has been rescheduled for April 18 at Lakeport, California. For more information, call 415/964-8386. As a result of the lobbying efforts of a coalition made up of the AMA , District 7, the Maryland Land Use Committee, the Maryland Motorcycle Dealers Association and ABATE of Maryland, chances appear good that House Bill 1050 is doomed to failure. The bill, sponsored by state delegate James Campbell (D- Balto. City), would require off-road motorcyclists and ATV riders in the state to pay into a registration program, but would not provide them with any recreational opportunities in return. After hearing testimony on the issue, the House Judiciary Committee voted March 8 to give the bill a "negative recommendation," meaning that it is unlikely to move any further in the political process this year. "It's interesting that everyone involved in the hearing, includi~g the bill's supporters, agreed that the state needs to offer responsible riding opportunities," said AMA legislative affairs specialist Eric Lundquist. "This bill would institute registration fees without providing anything in return. That's like putting the cart before the horse." The leaders of the coalition have since reached an informal agreement with supporters of the measure to promote a registration program that will benefit off-highway motorcyclists. New legislation creating that program is expected to be presented in next year's session. Yamaha has announced it will post $36,500 in contingency cash for the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Pro Stock class. Up to 16 drag racers riding Yamaha-powered bikes will have a chance to win contingency cash in each round of the NHRA's champi.onship series. A win earns $1000, with $500 being awarded for a second place finish, and decreasing amounts to semifinalists and riders eliminated in round one and round two. In addition, Yamaha riders who are in the top three point positions at the end of the series can earn $5000 for first, $3000 for second and $1000 for third. Core motors can be purchased from Vance & Hines and converted by them to meet Pro Stock specs. Informa tion on these motors is available from Joey Osowski at 310/921-7461. Larry Maiers will serve as the "voice" of the upcoming Nevada Rally. Maiers will be heard on the rally's promotional video and subsequent telecast as well as at the event's opening and closing ceremonies at the Excalibur Hotel-Casino in Las Vegas. Acerbis Adventures is now accepting entries for the Nevada Rally. There's a 200-rider limit and a July 31 deadline. For more information, call Bill Berroth at 619/562-1440. Former 250cc World Champion John Kocinski will be backed in part by Diesel Jeans in this season's World Championship 250cc Road Race Series. Kocinski's Lucky Strike Suzuki RGv250 will also feature the Diesel Jeans logo on its fairing as the European clothing manufacturer enters the Grand Prix series for the first time. Diesel Jeans will continue as the title sponsor for the World Championship Superbike Series. WERA has performance indexed the Yamaha 600 Seca II into the D classes. In addition to participating in the WERA Pro Series Yamaha Seca II Novice Challenge, Seca riders may also ride the bikes at WERA Regional Championship events in the D Production class if stock and in the D Superbike class if modified. Yamaha's Seca II predecessor, the FZ600, will also now be allowed in the appropriate D classes. For additonal information, contact WERA at 803/681-9372. Shortly after last week's issue went to press, Papa recieved a phone call from Larry Pegram, the dirt tracker who is laid up due to the multiple injuries he suffered in a February 15 road race crash in Phoenix. Pegram requested that we overnight mail him a copy of the latest issue with Daytona coverage. A few days later he called again to thank Papa. "Usually, I look through the In the Wind section and see if my name or any of my friend's names are in there, then I tum to the Voices page to see if anyone wrote any mean letters about me. Then I look at all the pictures and usually just put the paper down. But this time I read it from cover to cover and even found a few good deals in the classified section! I swear, I'm bored out of my mind." Pegram hopes to be back in action at the May 30 Springfield Mile.
